Manufacturer: China
Very pretty vintage black lacquer box with abalone inlaid pattern on top. The Dragon is one of the most ancient of Chinese symbols, a creature which appears in every branch of Chinese art. Eventually, the Dragon became the emblem of the Emperor himself. Together with the Phoenix they are Yang creatures and are used in decorative work much more than the two Yin animals, the Tiger and the Tortoise. The Phoenix was the symbol for Beauty, Goodness, Prosperity, Peace, and eventually the personal emblem of the Empress of China. The inside of the box has a mirror on the top and small part with cover ornate by garland of golden flowers. It is in excellent condition. The box measures 8 inches long, 4,5 inches wide and 2 inches tall. |
