Confederate Carbines & Musketoons by: John Murphy Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. The War Between the States wrought rapid and impressive change throughout the formerly agrarian South. With the coming of that conflict, factories and foundries that had long been engaged in making plows and farm tools suddenly found themselves gearing up to produce the implements of war. With this republication of Confederate Carbines & Musketoons, along with its companion volume by the same author, Confederate Rifles & Muskets, the complete story of the South's Civil War longarms manufacturing and procurement is told, both historically and technically. As with Confederate Rifles & Muskets, this book is the culmination of long years of firearms research and examination. More than just a reprint, Confederate Carbines & Musketoons is in many ways an entirely new book. There are scores of changes including reclassification of some arms, photographs of the only known (probably prototype) carbine made by D.C. Hodgkins & Son of Savannah, plus the addition of much new information gathered since the book's original publication in 1986. Important new chapters have been added on the Le Mat percussion carbines (and their ammunition) purchased and issued by the Confederacy, on the alterations done on old Hall's breechloading arms at many Southern armories, and on the issuance to and use of shotguns by Confederate cavalry (as well as infantry) troops, the significance of which has heretofore been largely unknown and ignored by arms historians. Dr. Murphy's extensive personal collection of Confederate longarms, probably the largest and finest grouping of its type, along with specimens selected from many of the foremost private and institutional collections in the country, forms the basis for this study. The arms are thoroughly examined within the detailed text, augmented by research into previously unexplored Civil War era records, manuscripts, and other documentation, and in the numerous large and clear photographs. The history of the time in which Confederate arms were used, the crisis that necessitated their making, and the uses to which they were put both during and after the war, long have intrigued and inspired collectors and researchers. Now, Confederate Carbines & Musketoons puts these arms into their proper perspective--valuable cultural and historic relics of a brave people, and of the romantic era in which they fought their valiant but vain struggle.

Silent Wings Savage Death: 82nd Airborne's Glider Artillery in WWII by: Nigl, Nigl Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. The book is based on the official unit history of the 319th Glider Field Artillery Battalion, one of two field artillery battalions attached to the famous 82nd Airborne Division. The 319th is one of the most highly decorated units among all of the U.S. Airborne forces, winning two Presidential Unit citations in WWII and then their third and fourth Presidential Unit citations for combat valor in Vietnam. During WWII, the men of the 319th fired over 88,000 high explosive shells against the enemy in five separate campaigns from Italy to the Siegfried Line, unleashing the equivalent destructive power of 3,345,786 pounds of TNT against German soldiers, troop vehicles, German artillery positions, Tiger tanks, 88 gun positions and pill boxes with devastating effectiveness. The men of the 319th made two glider assaults during WWII, the first on D Day in Normandy (where almost 20% of the men were killed or injured in the multiple glider crashes behind enemy lines) and the second during the invasion of Holland. Gliders were used by both Allied and Axis armies in Europe to bring large numbers of fighting men, artillery and heavier weapons onto the battlefields as part of several large scale Airborne invasions. The gliders were towed by powered aircraft such as the DC-3 or various bombers (in the case of the British and German glider troops) and then were released behind enemy lines to float silently to the battlefield with no offensive weapons, no armored plating to ward off anti-aircraft or machine gun fire and no effective landing gear or steering mechanisms to avoid crash landing. Of the 16 million service men and women, who served the United States during WW II, less than 1% were required to ride into battle aboard these powerless, unarmed aircraft, in what the History Channel has described as "Suicide Missions" of WW II. However, because the helicopter had not yet been perfected, the men of the 319th provided sorely needed artillery support to the paratroops of the 82nd and fought alongside the men of the 504th, 505th, 507th, 508th and glider troops of the 325th regiments (82nd Airborne) in every major battle of the ETO. In this thrilling saga, follow the men of the 319th from N. Africa to Italy, then on to the British Isles, where they prepared for the Normandy Invasion on June 6th, 1944. In Normandy the 319th Glider artillerymen, along with the paratroops of the 82nd Airborne, set a record for 33 days of continual combat without relief. Then it was back to England for several months of training before embarking on Operation Market-Garden, the invasion of Holland. When the British First Airborne surrendered to the Germans in Arnhem, the 319th went fought defensive action for over 40 days supporting the British forces until relieved and sent to France for a much needed rest and retraining. This respite from combat did not last long, however, as the 82nd Div (including the 319th was called up to the front lines in December of 1944 to stem the German Ardennes Offensive. In January of 1945, the 319th was part of the attack on the Siegfried Line, the last western defense of Nazi Germany. Later the 319th liberated Cologne, Germany and was sent on a mad rush in April of 1945 to keep the Russians from coming too far West and possibly capturing Denmark.

BL-AUTH-1999-0965554414-X2

Knives of the US Military WWII by: Michael Silvey Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. The latest book by military knife authority Mike Silvey, is sure to be a big hit with military knife collectors. Silvey, author of two well-known books on U.S. military knives and co-author of two others, continues the theme begun with Knives of the U.S. Military in Vietnam in his new book on WWII knives. On the principle that a picture is worth a thousand words, Knives of the U.S. Military - World War II is a hardcover book filled with page after page of large, full-color photographs and short, informative descriptions, illustrating more than 425 knives in total. If our soldiers used it, it's probably in here - and can be readily located by using the handy index. Silvey's new book covers the entire range of America's WWII knives by dividing them into two categories - "Standard Issue" and "Beyond Standard Issue". The first group is obvious - Mark 1s, Mark 2s, and M3s, the most basic knives of the war. In all, 41 pages are spent showing these important knives in great detail, from the more common specimens to some extremely rare variants. The second category - almost 200 pages - consists of virtually everything else used by our forces during the war. From Aerial to Vince (a maker of deep sea divers' knives), Silvey covers the gamut, including a large number of unit issue knives such as the V-42 and "V-44", privately purchased knives such as the Case pigsticker, British-made knives such as smatchets and Fairbairn-Sykes knives, Australian-made knives, knives crafted from sword blades, GI-made knives, and knives by famous makers such as Bo Randall, John Ek, Frank Richtig, and Floyd Nichols. When coupled with Silvey's Vietnam book, collectors will find that Knives of the U.S. Military - World War II largely replaces the out-of-print and highly sought after book U.S. Military Knives 1941-1991 with more knives, more information, and better photography. It's a worthy addition to any collector's library, and the next best thing to owning some of the rare and pricey models photographed within.

The Military Knife & Bayonet (Identification & Dating) by: Homer Brett Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. With over 70 countries represented and many previously unidentified examples, this new book is an absolute must for every military knife and bayonet collector. Almost 400 pages of beautiful full-color photos - the world of military edged weapons in a single book. BOOK REVIEW (Reviewed by Frank Trzaska) The Military Knife and Bayonet is the long awaited tome by the noted bayonet and knife authority Homer M. Brett. In actuality, the new book is a joint effort between Mr. Brett and the well known Japanese publisher Kesaharu Imai. This book serves as a general military knife and bayonet history with emphasis on the two World Wars and the period since, although many items date back to the 1700s. The layout is done in alphabetical order by country of origin, which is a well thought out system that allows for easy reference. Printed on high quality paper, the pages are packed with professional, studio quality color photographs. Each photograph is accompanied with text in both Japanese and English to appeal to the respective countries in which it will be sold. While speaking of the dual text, it should also be noted that certain very distinct differences are carried over from traditional Japanese publishing. In place of the usual single introduction we have come to expect in a reference book, the Japanese style presents multiple letters of introduction by experts of equal or greater knowledge and stature. This helps to establish the new author as an expert in his or her field. Here, the introductions are by M.H. Cole, Mickey Finn, Gary Boyd and Jerry L. Janzen, fine company to be in for sure. The author's extensive research and actual field testing in parachute operations all over the globe have placed him in an enviable position to come into contact with many blades never before seen in the Western world. While the book does have world wide coverage, the United States section is truly extensive. Covered are the standard models to be expected, but also included are many never before seen prototypes and experimental models, some still in trials and testing. The Military Knife and Bayonet is published in a fine hardcover 8-1/2" x 11" format with 392 pages of high quality glossy paper. Over 1000 knives are pictured in full color. It is a must-have reference book for your military blade library. A beautiful full-color look at knives and bayonets from over 70 countries- a superb reference! Author's Note:"My extensive field research and military parachuting with the airborne and special forces units of the U.S. and foreign countries, including those of the former Warsaw Pact, has allowed me to include their designs. Such diverse nations as Russia, China, Poland, Vietnam and Serbia (former Yugoslavia) are included in the book."

Pocket Knives of the US Military by: Michael Silvey Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Silvey's latest contribution to the literature is a new book entitled Pocket Knives of the United States Military, and it's well worthy of the Silvey reputation. This book follows the format of the last two Silvey works, a well done hardcover book filled with beautiful full color photographs and brief descriptions of top notch knives. The overall size of the new book is smaller; reduced, as Mike tells me, to keep the pocketknives in proportion to their actual size. It also serves a secondary purpose in helping to keep the book's cost down to a remarkable $24.95. That's a mac-and-cheese price for sirloin, folks! Pocket Knives of the United States Military is organized into the following sections: Introduction, The First Folders, World War I, World War II, and Postwar (which covers knives up through the late 1980s). Coverage ranges from the expected pages of TL-29s and 4-blade utility knives to rare switchblades, demolition knives, OSS and CIA folders, and far, far more U.S. Navy rope knives than I ever knew existed. The photos are as beautiful as expected, and the knives pictured the finest that could be procured. A bibliography is included as an added bonus. Whether your interests lie in pocketknives or military knives, Pocket Knives of the United States Military is a beautiful and useful reference at a bargain price. Highly recommended.

We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Autographed by Paul F. Braddock.DOG TAGS: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN MILITARY IDENTIFICATION TAG, 1861 to 2002. 2003 by Paul F. Braddock. This meticulously researched and scholarly written publication brings to us the complete history and explanation of military identification tags. Methods for identification of a soldier could be a piece of paper pinned to his coat or a smoothed coin, small brass disk or silver metal badge stamped or engraved with information that could identify his remains for his family. Until the Federal Government established a system to identify each soldier in 1906, many of the dead would go unidentified, as were 46% of those during the Civil War. The author divides the book into years beginning with the American Civil War, and explains the evolution of the I.D. tag. There are loads of photos throughout the book. Autographed.
