Inuit Carved Soapstone Plateau Signed, Hunter
As an artist, I have always collected art and sculpture as well. This is one of the pieces from my sculpture collection. I cannot exactly remember when I purchased it, but I can tell you I bought it in Bucks County, PA. My love of art is what drew me to this piece and the workmanship involved. This is a very deep green soapstone that has been carved to depict a seal hunter carving up a seal with a knife. The hunter kneeling by his catch has already made a deep cut in the belly of the seal. This is a very powerful carving technique that looks like the classic era carvings to me. The stone has small white speckles throughout,as well as veins. The bottom is bearing 2 Canadian Eskimo Art Labels with the igloos,a small one and a little bit larger one. The cryptic alpha-numerical identification number of what looks like to the best of my eyesight(please check photos)09314 CC,hdl 66??,1982,a circle with a c inside with a triangle, and a blue dot sticker. I have no idea what the blue dot is for. There are more photos upon request. I do not know much about the history of the signatures or artists of these pieces. It is in excellent condition. Measures 4 inches long, 3 3/4 inches in height. A very skilled hand carved this piece. A beautiful example of the inuit art. Shipping is $15 for priority, insured.
