DOG DICTIONARY EDWIN MEGARGEE 1ST DJ VG This rich and beautiful book THE DOG DICTIONARY, written and illustrated by Edwin Megargee was published in 1954 by the World Publishers. This is the FIRST EDITION (stated) and comes cloth bound in NEAR FINE condition - PLUS, it comes in a VERY GOOD condition unclipped original dust jacket - MUST SEE PICS! Jacket has a small chip to spine bottom, rear panel and one tiny one to front panel (UL) - there are also some old celo-tape stains to verso (should show in pics). These aren't distracting because they are incredibly difficult to see on outside of dj. Rust colored cloth features a very nice dog (Spaniel?) illustration in black surrounded by a double alphabet embossed in gilt creating frame. Signed on the title page by fabulous woodcut/wood engraving illustrator artist Fritz Eichenberg, who provided six wood engravings for this compilation of Sandurg's work which contains 70 poems by Carl Sanburg which were selected by Lee Bennet Hopkins - THIS COPY doesn't seem to be a First Trade Edition, but certainly an early printing (other than a rare limited 1st that sells for thousands). Scarce flat-signed by illustrator. If you like Fritz Eichenberg or are unfamiliar with his work, it's like a certain predecessor of other greats like Frank Miller (Sin City) - little less action, but if you know how these woodcuts are done in reverse -- the genius of the black/white positive/negative and the talent to execute such work is undeniable.
