1938 Ford Ad Billy DeVorss PINUP w/ Borzoi
This vintage sample calendar ad for FORD came from the estate of an elderly gentleman who was a salesman for a number of calendar companies from the 1920's through the 1940's. This 16 inch W x 21 3/4 inch L print is entitled THE CENTER OF ATTRACTION signed by artist Billy De Vorss from the Kemper Thomas Co. Cinn. Ohio. The notes printed on the back of the print give more information about the artist & his painting. There are also the salesman's calculations as to cost. MUST SEE PICS! It's outstanding with a matte finish on heavy stock paper with brilliant colors. Two unique items are the beautiful white Borzoi or Russian Wolfhound & the fur stole around her neck that has a fox head with eyes wide open! It does have a few very minor flaws: A crease across the bottom edge just below the dog's feet - a few chips of the blue background that does not go through the paper - a pinhole in the top margin that is hard to see unless held to the light & 2 less than 1/4 inch tears on the edge. All would be covered by framing except for the chips & they are hardly noticeable, but felt the need to mention. First and last photos truest to color - must have been a cloud passing in between because we shoot our pics in natural daylight with no flash on bright white backgrounds. This print is a RARE FIND as this is ONLY A SAMPLE & COULD HAVE BEEN PRINTED UP FOR ANY COMPANY WITH THEIR OWN SLOGAN. THIS MIGHT VERY WELL BE A ONE OF A KIND FORD ADVERTISEMENT!
"DeVorss used an incredible variety of pastel colors for his work and he applied them directly onto the board, blending them dry with his fingers. His occasional oil paintings bear the rich, painterly brushstrokes of the Sundblom School. Like Rolf Armstrong, DeVorss always worked from live models for the final painting; he did, however, employ photographs for preliminary stages. His vibrant pin-ups, inspired by New York's theaters and nightclubs, display a fine sense of composition, a flowing, gracelful line and a daring blend of colors."(THE GREAT AMERICAN PIN-UP by Martignette & Meisel p.158). This is an amazing ART DECO print! Has the feel of Erte' and other artists working in the Deco style. This print of course is OLD - VINTAGE & in amazing condition for its age!
