Bronze finished cast iron Native American bookends stand 5.5 inches tall and nearly 4.5 inches wide. Sold as a pair these two are in VERY GOOD condition and date from the late 1920s to 1930s. (Ref. BOOKEND REVUE by Seecof & Kuritzky 1996 Schiffer Publishing p.76/7) Called SACHEM (Massachusetts Indian term denoting supreme ruler or chief - Stoutenburgh 1960) these beautiful iron bookends show a Native American Chief in full head dress, necklaces and part of what looks like a quilled vest.
