This is an amazingly rare FIRST EDITION of PETROCLUS AND PENELOPE: A CHAT IN THE SADDLE by Theodore Ayrault Dodge (1842-1909) member of the U.S.Army/Union Army. A book about HORSES, training, communicating with, communicating with and such. It is an unusual topic by a really remarkable individual who would go on after this to write a series of books about famous military leaders THAT ARE ALL STILL IN PRINT! You might be able to find a handfull of reading copies of this title, if you're lucky, for under a hundred bucks - BUT you will not find one in this nice condition very readily, easily or presumably any time soon - PLEASE LOOK AT PICS! This the author's incredibly scarce third book! Published in 1885 (No Additional dates, but five books listed) by Houghton, Mifflin, & Co., this comes bound in GOLD gilt stamped spine titling embossed into rich red leather spine (soft & supple, feels like & is probably calf skin). ANY wear is nominal, which is franky RARE! The front & back boards are pictorially covered with great Gray Parker illustrations - MUST SEE PICS! Contains ALL fourteen illustrated plates by Gray Parker as well, who is apparently a story in and of himself, however an INCREDIBLE artist to boot, especially in this type of equestrian artistry - these are absolutley AMAZING renderings and the whole book is tight & COMPLETE!!! As far as we could find, this is the BEST copy of this book in the country as of current and we'd also guess that if anyone else has one in this nice condition, they're not going to be parting with it anytime soon! So, not only do you get this oddball HTF book by Theodore A. Dodge, there are also 14 plates by Gray Parker, not including the two on the boards! In some ways, by nature of style, if pointilism (ala Seurat) had turned toward rendering horses, it would come close to Parker's method in pen & ink - SO many little lines and points, each plate is a joy to take in - nearly hypnotic! This book is in very nice condition with some trace wear to extremities (& not much at that), but overall a tight clean copy that is INCREDIBLY HARD TO FIND! Especially try finding a copy any time soon in this nice condition - just an absolute BEAUTY! I could gush on about this book all day, but see for yourself and feel free to write me if you need to see anymore plates, pictures of the exterior, whatever - a tremendous find that won't come around any time soon. Check to see if we have any other books by this prolific Civil War Veteran author [A New York Volunteer Infantry member of the 101st & 119th regiments: lost a leg at Gettysburg after being wounded three prior times (quadruple purple heart?) = Lt. Colonel]. FREE SHIPPING within the U.S. - international buyers pay ACTUAL shipping charges based on final packed weight of item. Feel free to e-mail w/ any questions and THANKS FOR LOOKING!
[T.A. Dodge is a pretty interesting man in his own right. He married the grandniece of Chief Justice Marshall, Jane Marshall who died in 1891. As widower, he married again in 1892 to Clara Isabel who helped him with his books - some were about Rome & many about warfare/warriors/generals still remain in print today! Definitely worth a trip to the Dodge family website & related Civil War links.]
