Dixie Queen A. H. Motley Tobacco label in a Fourth Grade Reader from 1895.
This rare, round Dixie Queen tobacco label is to be found stuck to the inside back cover of a fourth grade reader. It says Manufactured by A. H. Motley, Co., Reidsville North Carolina, U. S. A. Finest on Earth, Fragrant as Violets. Plug Cut. 3 Oz. Full Weight 10 cents.
The owner of the reader seemed to be obsessed with smoking. All the people (and even the monkeys) in the book's pictures are smoking pipes, cigars or cigarettes, drawn in by the book owner.
The Revised Fourth Reader, published as part of the California State Series, probably in 1895, is in very poor condition. The Title page, and several other pages, have been torn out. The date is deduced from another copy of the same book.
The preface of the book states, *Thoughtful men and women recognize the formation of character as the ultimate object of all education.
* Excerpts from many well known classic authors.
