For sale is a very rare piece of art glass. Most of us only see this type of glass in the fine art glass books. This finger bowl is 2 1/2" high and 5 1/2" across. This is a unique opaque ware that was produced less than A YEAR by the New England Glass Company. It was patented by Joseph Locke in January of 1887, and by 1888, they were not making any more pieces of agata glass. Agata has the coloration of New England “Wild Rose” Peach Blow, shading from a deep rose at the top to a cream white at the base. Pronounced oil spots or splotches cover a portion or all of the object. These were created when the article was covered with a metallic stain, then naphtha, alcohol or benzene was spattered over it. As the flammable liquid evaporated in a muffle, the surface mottling was fixed. These pieces were never signed. This finger bowl is absolutely PERFECT, gorgeous, the splot staining is tremendous and numerous. Rating: zero to ten, it is an 11.
