AGATA LILY VASE - N.E. GLASS CO.

AGATA LILY VASE THAT WAS MADE BY THE NEW ENGLAND GLASS COMPANY.
THIS VASE WAS MADE IN 1887. THE PRODUCTION FOR AGATA GLASS WAS LESS THEN ONE YEAR, SO, THERE AREN’T MANY OF THESE PIECES AROUND, ESPECIALLY IN PERFECT CONDITION AS THIS ONE IS.

THIS PARTICULAR VASE IS 8" TALL. THERE IS VERY HEAVY STAINING ON THE TOP OF THE BASE AND THE UNDERNEATH. THERE ARE SCATTERED BLOTCHES OF PURPLE STAINING UNDERNEATH AND ON THE SIDE OF THE LILY.

THIS PARTICULAR VASE HAS THE SHINY FINISH. THE COLOR GRADATION IS BEYOND WORDS. THERE IS A NICKLE-SIZED POLISHED PONTIL.

PLEASE NOTE: IN THE “AMERICAN ART GLASS” BOOK BY SHULMAN, ON PAGE 49, THERE IS THE EXACT VASE PICTURED. THE ONE PICTURED IS 6", MINE IS 8". PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THE PRICE FOR THIS PIECE, IN THIS BOOK, WHICH IS A 1994 EDITION, IS $2,520.00, AND IN THE 1996 BOOK IT IS PRICED AT $2,750.00. SO, WE CAN ASSUME, IN 2005, THE PRICE WOULD BE OVER $3,000.00. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ONE PICTURED IN THE BOOK AND MINE, BESIDES THE SIZE, THE ONE IN THE BOOK HAS MORE STAINING.

PHOTOGRAPH FROM BOOK SHOWING PIECE AND LISTING.

It was patented by Joseph Locke in January of 1887. Agata has the coloration of New England “Wild Rose” Peach Blow, shading from a deep rose at the top to a cream white at the base. Pronounced oil spots or splotches cover a portion or all of the object. These were created when the article was covered with a metallic stain, then naphtha, alcohol or benzene was spattered over it. As the flammable liquid evaporated in a muffle, the surface mottling was fixed. These pieces were never signed. This vase is absolutely PERFECT. Rating: zero to ten, it is an 11.
