This antique Victorian shell-cameo pin portrays the wood nymph, Daphne, crowned with a laurel wreath. When pursued by Apollo, Daphne appealed for help to her father, the river god, Peneus, who transformed her into a laurel tree. Apollo mourned her loss so much that he chose the laurel to be his tree and wreaths of laurel to crown victors in his honor.
This pin measures about 1.3" by 1.1".
Beautiful classic twisted-border gold-filled frame with the Victorian c-clasp in the back. The frame and cameo are in excellent condition. The cameo has no cracks or chips. |
