Black American Cloth Rag Dolls. Often made by mothers & other caregivers. As money & material goods were scarce for many families, corncobs or socks were often used as the doll body. Fabric scraps were used for the arms, legs & clothing. It was not unusual for a mother to create her child's doll by simply knotting whatever fabric scraps she could find. Some Black American dolls date back to the days of slavery. Before the Civil War, it is said these women fashioned black face dolls dressed in calico as playthings for the white children in their care. The doll maker used whatever bits and pieces were handy. Commercially made dolls began to appear toward the end of the 19th century. Many have hand-oil painted faces. All of our dolls are quality pieces of Americana or folk art.

Black Americana Cloth Doll Black Americana cloth doll. Overall length 26" made of a textured brown to black material that feels velvety. Her head & chest are stuffed, her arms only mildly so. Button eyes & nose, embroidered mouth. One corner of her lips has been "loved" off. There are no tears in the doll body. Her cloth dress is sewn closed at the bottom. She has a long ribbon around her neck similar in color to the edging used at the collar. The dress is torn and has stains on the top and a larger almost tea colored one on the skirt. She is not mint, but there is something so "special" about her I had to have her. A country mustard color. I guarantee you will love her. Black American Black Memorabilia doll dolls Black American

Black Americana Effanbee Hand made Black American Doll Black Americana Effanbee appears Hand made Black American Doll. Gently used. I sold the same in mint condition, with the Effanbee paper tag & box several years ago that is how I knew it to be Effanbee. I think the greenj ribbon on her right hand held the tag. 12" tall, less than a pound. Her face has some stiffness to it, eyes and mouth are painted. The lips are missing a little paint. The hair is thin from being "gently loved". The back is full, the very top and the left side show thinness. Her arms and legs are stitched in a velvety fabric. Her dress is of cotton and faded with age. Her head is attached, there are no holes or tears in the body or outfit. Clean. black american doll

Black Americana Rag Doll Black Memorabilia 24" Rag Doll. Black American Folk Art. Late 1940s or early 1950s. Attached & arms. Knees are stitched to allow her to sit on a shelf or dresser. Her feet are pink, slightly soiled. Felt features, navy blue not black yarn, an unusual twist. Her clothes are also machine stitiched, I suspect her white bloomers are a later addition. She was made to resemble Raggedy Ann & her Black American friend Belindy. My guess is she was stuffed with rags as there is an occasional bumpy feel. Black American "Sailor" Folk Art Ragdoll Black Americana Folk Art Rag doll dressed unusually as a "sailor". In the 40's it was popular to dress little boys and girls in sailor suits, this is the first time I have ever seen a vintage Black American doll in one! 14" tall she has very tight wool hair. She possesses many sought after characterisitcs including the rare "ears" "tiny tiny" fingerss, nicely embroidered eyes with eyebrows, it appears her mouth was made from red cloth, and sewn so tightly it almost looks like embroidery. Her arms are attached with twine, her legs with the assistance of buttons. Her blue skirt is even pleated! The top is separate with a large color & very detailed white trim on the collar & sleeves. there is a tiny repair to her left leg that appears to have been done many many years ago. Her legs are not one piece like most but rather her foot bottoms are one piece, and sewn to two sections to make the legs. She was pieced & sewn together very well.
