Folk Art Handcarved Male Black Americana Folk Art Hand Signed Carved Male Figure Folk art carving 11" tall of a man who's ethnicity is questionable. A Black American gentleman? A French soldier? Then again my "accordian player" at times seems like a kindly old gent perhaps playing on a street corner in an Italian neighborhood in New York. The detail of his body is roughly done, but very deep and textured, the detail in the face and the accordian is wonderful. The accordian actually swivels in his hands! His cap looks military or organizational, but his flashy scarf belies that idea. For all his fine qualities he does have awfully big nose and feet! SIGNED on the base, hand written in pencil. I think it reads "A J Truitt 1924" In ORIGINAL condition, the wood is wonderfull, and the "stories he could tell." folk art

Inside the covet : Collector's Item Famous Songs Of Bert Williams Four records in album set C-25. Bert Williams died in 1922. But as long as songs are sung, Bert Williams will be remembered as the humble comedian from the British West Indies who taught millions of Americans to laugh and kings to Cake Walk. Columbia Records proudly presents an album of eight songs re-recorded from the old masters. World-famous for his homey philosophy and gentle humor. These songs which he had written to order for himself, reflected and magnified the spirit of the post-war erea in American life. Prohibition was one of his favorite themes. The Moon Shines on the Moonsine and Everybody Wants a Key to My Cellar were Bert Williams hits to kid the prohibitionists of that day. How These Records Were Made in a recording session sometime in the early Twenties. At the small end of the recording horn was a French plate glass diaphragm to which was attached a stylus lever supporting a recording jewel. This cut the vibrations of Bert's voice into a disc of soft wax previously heated so that it would take clear impressions of the lateral movements of the cutting jewel. These songs have been re-recorded from the original masters were unearthed in the files of the Columbia Recording corporation. The four 78s are in excellent condition. Awesome set, appeals to collectors of vintage records and Black Americana, Black Memorabila.

Folk Art Hand Carved Pair Black Americana Old Folks Hand carved figures of a Black American man and woman. I have single carvings but it is unusual to find a pair. She is 8" tall he is 7.5" tall if you note the depth of the bases, hers is also a shorter base making her even taller than he. There is a pencil notation that I can not read on her base, it seems too be No 630. They are very intricate, she has a very large nose. Note the tiny dots on her skirt. She has a hold through her clenched hand, she probably had a stick for walking there at one time. He is also a dapper dresser. Note his colorful dotted tie. My guess would be from the late 40s or early 50s. The carver evidently took great pride in his work I determined that from the elegant postures and clothing. Black America folk art

Her feet are pink, slightly soiled. Felt features, navy blue not black yarn, an unusual twist. Her clothes are also machine stitiched, I suspect her white bloomers are a later addition. Black Americana Oyster Dredging In The Chesapeake Bay Black Americana Engraving Mine Oyster Dredging Boats In The Chesapeake (Bay)
Black Americana hung in our home 20 years, professionally framed & matted. Accompanying card: : Authentic Antique Print Professionally Hand Colored American History Depicted In Engravings From Illustrated Antique Weeklies. From mid 1800's to turn of the century before many could read, extremely popular illustrated newspapers such as Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie"s Illustrated pictured the news and events of the times.
Special artist-correspondents were present at the event to accurately sketch the scene as it was making hisory. These sketches were rushed to the East Coast publishers whereby skilled artisans engraved them on wood blocks.
Within a week after the event the printed illustrated newspapers were in the publics hands. Today their value to collectors is twofold, as historically accurate records, and as exquisitely engeraved works of art. At the side it says: Supplement, March 16, 1872 Harpers Weekly. Below: Mine Oyster Dredging Boats In The Chesapeake (See page 220) To the far right is regarding a story. There's an ink smudge upper right corner. Far left under the way is the artists name W.L. Sheppard Del. Beautifully done there are 12 men shown in 4 boats. Note: William Ludwell Sheppard (1838-1912), a famous illustrator, was a Richmond, VA native who fought and drew for the Confederates during the Civil War; and afterward he had a prosperous career depicting the South and its veterans in magazine and book illustrations, watercolors, oil paintings, and sculpture.
Crossover collectible for the collectors of Black Memorabilia and those collecting oyster tins & advertising as well as those interested in the Chesapeake Bay. 15 1/2" wide 10 1/2" across, the frame is 20 1/2" x 15 1/4".cross, the frame is 20 1/2" x 15 1/4".About 5 lbs unpackaged.
