Manufacturer: Thomas Godwin - Staffordshire
Staffordshire "W Penns Treaty" vegetable bowl. Stoneware. Thomas Godwin. Staffordshire, England. c. 1834-1854. Extremely rare! Vegetable bowl in green & white transfer; scalloped edge. The pattern is "W. Penns Treaty." A series of geometric borders surround the central scene & are on exterior.

Palm trees are erroneously depicted as existing in PA! Historical American scenes were a favorite subject for Staffordshire potters who had never visited America. A plate in this pattern appears in ‘Historical Staffordshire’ by Jeffrey B. Snyder (p. 58) where he attributres it to Thomas Green (c. 1847-1859). In 'Romantic Staffordshire', a later book by Mr. Snyder (p. 62 - 63), he attributes it to Thomas Godwin. Mr. Snyder goes on to discuss how the two potters were often confused when making attributions, but does not mention his own mistake. Measures approximately 10.25" x 8.5" x 2" high. CONDITION: Fair (crazing; some staining; bad, long crack). At least 148 years old!
