William (Bill) Haskell Coffin was born in Charleston SC in 1878 and died in St. Petersburg FL in 1941, but spent most of his career in NYC. He initially studied at the Corcoran School of Art and later in Paris with Laurens. Maurice Compris (1885-1939; Rockport, MA) "Matriarch": oil on canvas (30" x 24"). Signed and dated ("30") UL. Maurice Compris was born in Amsterdam, Holland, but emigrated to the United States at an early age. He studied with Drake and Alebee and eventually settled in Rockport, Massachusetts. He was a member of both the North Shore and Rockport Artist Associations and won a prize with an exhibition at the latter in 1931. One of his murals can be seen at the Massachusetts State Infirmary in Tewksbury. Listings: Dav; Ma; WWW.

George E. Forster (1860-1890) "Still life: fruit and wine": Oil on board (19" x 25"). Signed LL. Listings: Ben; Dav; FJ. Enigmatic and short-lived late 19th C painter of still lifes. The few paintings of George Forster are highly valued today. Our current offering is not without some problems, however: the artist's board is somewhat bowed and shows wrinkling due to water damage in the UR corner, frame abrasion in the LR corner, and some evidence of inpainting (see lemon in central detail).
