Utagawa YOSHIIKU (1833-1904)
Scene from the series "36 Restaurants"; oban tate-e (13¼" x 8¾"). Signed "Chokaro Yoshiiku ga"; published by Tsutakichi; ca. 1870s. Condition of print: good; colors still fresh; margins partially trimmed; two small wormholes on right side; attached to presentation folder by UR corner. Yoshiiku was one of the best pupils of Kuniyoshi, eventually rivaling his contemporary Yoshitoshi in popularity. After the Meiji restoration he also became popular as a newpaper illustrator. This print illustrates the early use of the new aniline dyes, which became available to printmakers after trade with the West opened up in the 1860s and which would become the standard colors used in prints during the following decades.

Tsukioka YOSHITOSHI (1839-1892)
"The father returns from military duty" from "Kyokun Zen-aku Zukai (Pictoral Explanations of the Teachings of Good and Evil)"; chuban yoko-e (6½" x 8¼"). Signed by Yoshitoshi LR; ca. 1880. Condition of print: good to very good; vivid colors; full margins; slight toning; small scratch in UR background wall; white tape across top margin, not touching image. This ia a chuban-sized print from Yoshitoshi's charming set on Meiji morals. The strange, ghost-like figures hovering around the characters are the spirits of good and evil (here all good) who push the characters into certain actions and applaud when they follow. The scene here shows the father, who wears the uniform of a military commander, returning to his family, who bow down before him. The words of the conversation are written on the pale green flooring.
