A0AT
W. Kindred (mid 20th C.; USA) "Children's Day"; 20" x 15½"; unframed. Signed and dated ("8/61") LR. This unusually large and striking woodcut by an unknown American artist appears to depict kokeshi-like celebrants of "Children's Day" in Japan, when children dress up in traditional robes and receive gifts. The carving is nicely done, while the colors are vivid and thoroughly saturate the print. Apparently an artist's proof ("proof" is written in pencil across the bottom in the center), the print is also pencil-signed and dated in the LR margin; the artist's initials ("WK") also appear as part of the woodcut in the lower right hand corner. There is no damage to the image, but the paper is fragile and somewhat toned in the margins.
