We just acquired a wonderful collection of Asian boxes from a South Carolina collector. This is a wonderful 19th century Japanese black lacquer box. it is 3 1/2" x 1 1/2".
The lid has magnificent inlaid hardstones. The original owner has this note inside: "Valuable lacquer box. Face is ivory, bench is MOP and kimona is jade". It is also decorated with gold trees and a fence. Excellent condition.
