Antique 14 carat gold Gypsy Bracelet / bangle with applied stars, flowers and horseshoe with a red stone. Supposedly, these bracelets were made by the gypsies in Europe. This one dates to early 20th century - 1930's.

Measures a little over 2 inches in length, but can be pulled more open or pushed more closed to suit a slightly bigger/smaller wrist. Width is 1 1/8 inch. Weighs 35 grams.

As mentioned, the belief is that these bracelets were made by Gypsies in Europe, by beating gold coins (see note below). This particular bracelet has a very solid feel to it. It has nice rounded ends and a raised border with twisted gold cable attached. The surface is engraved with a foliate design. It is further embellished by arching openwork stars/flowers and a horseshoe, symbol of good luck in the center, with a flower in it's middle and a red stone in the center of the flower.

Hallmarked 14k.

Good condition. No damage of any sort.

I had an email from a lady and I will quote part of her fascinating letter:Generally the Roma had these pieces of jewelry custom made by non Gypsy jewelers according to their wishes...that's where the 14k stamp came from...at some point they could no longer use US gold coins so they had 14k made into jewelry..I had inherited some of these pieces from my grandmother and that's what I was told, that they were MADE for the Gypsy people by non Gypsy jewelers......my jewelry came in an old decrepped carved wood Chinese jewelry box...My family stopped traveling by wagon in about 1910 and settled in the Spokane, Washington area....where my ggrandmother and grandmother sold beauty potions and remedies fom a storefront.... |
