CLBK13

This is the 1972 edition of Clocks by Simon Fleet. It was published by Octopus Books of London. This wonderful collectors reference book contains 136 illustrations in color and black and white. It begins with early time-keepers and moves on to discussion of early domestic clocks. The third chapter covers domestic clocks from the 1500’s to the 1700’s. There is a chapter on French clocks from the 1700’s to the 1800’s and one on general European clocks of that same period. Another chapter covers domestic clocks from Europe and America from the 1700’s to 1961. There is a very short chapter on Japanese clocks and another short chapter on monumental clocks such as Big Ben in London. This book contains pictures and illustrations of the most unique and beautiful clocks that the world has ever produce. The book comes complete with a dust jacket that is in good conditon with a small rip on the edge. The edges of the boards are rubbed in the spine area. The binding has been broken at the chapter on Japanese clocks. I believe the previous owner must have been partial to that subject. The binding is secure and the pages are all still firmly attached. The book measures 9 ¾ by 8 ½ inches. This book is a conversation piece that is meant for a coffee table or library table and not a book shelf. If you collect clocks, you will want to own this wonderful book.

CLBK12

Time and Space – Measuring Instruments from the 15th to the 19th Century, written by Samuel Guye and Henri Michel, is a masterpiece on clocks and watches. This overly large book was first published in Great Britain by Pall Mall Press Limited in 1971. The original text was in French and titled Mesures du Emps et de l’Espace. The translation was done by Diana Dolan. This book contains over 280 pages of text, illustrations and photgraphs of clocks and watches. It is truly a monumental and masterful undertaking. The measures 10 ¼ by 10 inches and is almost 2 inches thick. The dust cover has some tears along the spince. A few of the pages have creased corners as you can see from the picture. The board edges show some rubbing and slight soil from age. The top of the closed book shows some slight soil. This book is a must have for the collector of clocks and watches. Inspite of the condition flaws listed above, this book will still display well. If you collect clocks and watches, you will want to have this reference masterpiece in your library.

This is a wonderful vintage book for the children’s game enthusiast call Games for Everyday. It was copyrighted in 1926 and revised in 1930. This is the 1948 printing of this title by The Macmillan Company New York. The book was written by Gabrielle Elliot and Arthur Forbush. It is illustrated by Constance Wittemore. It includes chapters such as Games for Rainy Days, Games to Play when Traveling and even a chapter on card games. Chapter 16 is concerned with the rules for the time honored game of marbles! What a wonderful look at games in the first half of the 20th century. The book is hard bound with an orange cover and black print. The edges are worn or rubbed. But the binding is tight and the pages are secure. This was a library book in rural Nebraska. So it has the pocket and check out card still in place. This rare and out of print book is just a wonderful piece of nostalgia.
