THEME : Virgin Mary - That Mary was the virgin mother of the divine Christ is made plain in the Bible and from the beginningChristians have believed she remained virgin throughout her life, as church fathers, and councils testify. In the Roman Catholic Church it isan article of faith that God preserved Mary from the taint of 'original sin' from the first moment of her conception in her mother's womb (her 'Immaculate Conception'). Also that, without denying her natural death, at the end of her earthly life she was taken body and soul into Heaven (her Assumption).
MATERIAL : 18K yellow gold
TECHNIQUE : Plique a jour, which is a French term for a technique of decoration in enamelling by which the design is outlined in metal and filled in with variously colored transparent enamels but with no backing behind the enamel, so that the effect is similar to that of a stained-glass window.
WEIGHT : 4.50 gram (2.89 dwt)
MONOGRAM : illegible remains of the maker's monogram
ENGRAVING : At the back we read an engraved monogram 'SL' and the date '8 Septembre 1919'
HALLMARKS : French origin since 1838 - eagle's head - We are sure of the origin of this jewel because of the control mark representing an eagles head (that was in use in France from about 1838).
