My American Journey by Colin Powell Colin Powell is the embodiment of the American dream. Born in Harlem to immigrant parents from Jamaica, he knew the rough life of the streets and overcame a barely average start at school. He joined the Army -- and the rest is history. But that history was not completely told until Powell himself told how it happened!

MY AMERICAN JOURNEY is a memoir distinguished by a heartfelt love of country and family, warm good humor, and a soldier’s directness. He writes of the anxieties and missteps, as well as the triumphs that marked his rise to four-star general, National Security Advisor, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, mastermind of Desert Storm, and now Secretary of State and the man much of ht country would most like to draft as president, just as it drafted General Eisenhower in 1952.

The 643-page hardbound book, written with Joseph E. Persico, was published in this 1995 stated First Edition by Random House, New York. It includes two large sections of black/white photos.

Condition is Very Good, with a dust jacket also in Very Good shape. There is a small area on bottom one-inch of the covers where the dark blue binding has faded onto the white boards (evidently this was in a damp location), but there are no other apparent defects on the boards or pages inside. Great Family Collections – WOW!
The history of collecting is a fascinating and illuminating byway in the study of art. Yet nowhere can this study be pursued with more instructive results, both as regards the workings of history and fluctuations in taste, than amid the splendidly rich (and often inaccessible) collections amassed by several generations of some of the oldest noble families of Europe. Under the various pressures of modern life, many of these collections have had to be dispersed or have become public property, but some of the grandest and most important still adorn the houses of those families with whose names they are associated.

This handsome book, GREAT FAMILY COLLECTIONS, describes the history and growth of twelve such great European. collections, each of which represents a unique accumulation of art treasures of different dates and origins, and includes paintings by old and modern masters, furniture, sculpture, tapestries, porcelain, armor, rare books, or objects d'art of other kinds.

Each collection is described in detail by a distinguished art historian who knows it intimately, the idea being to trace the origin, subsequent growth or transformation of the collection, to give relevant information about those members of the family who made the greatest contributions, and to discuss both the major and the lesser works of art which it comprises. The collections have been specially photographed for this book in color and black and white to show both the superb individual pieces and the magnificent settings in which they are found.

The 304-page hardbound book has 48 pages in full color and approximately 350 other illustrations. It was edited by Douglas Cooper, former Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Oxford, and himself a collector, whose introduction describes the history of aristocratic collecting in Europe and the contribution it has made to our cultural heritage.

The collections included in this book are: THE PRINCES COLONNA, Rome, Italy; THE PRINCES DORIA PAMPHILI, Rome, Italy; THE COUNTS WRANGEL AND BRAHE, Skokloster, Sweden; THE COUNTS HARRACH, Vienna, Austria; THE PRINCES PALLAVICINI, Rome, Italy; THE DUKES OF DEVONSHIRE, Chatsworth, England; THE PRINCES FURSTENBERG, Donaueschingen, Germany; THE EARLS SPENCER, Althorp, England; THE MARQUESS OF CHOLMONDELEY, Houghton, England; THE PRINCES DE CONDE AND THE DUC D' AU MALE, Chantilly, France; THE DUKES OF ALBA, Madrid, Spain; THE PRINCES DE BEAUVAU-CRAON, Haroue, France.

Shown on the front of the dust jacket is Archduke Leopold William Visiting His Picture Gallery in Brussels by David Teniers (reproduced courtesy of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna) and on the back cover, one of the richly decorated rooms in the Colonna Collection.

The 1965 hardbound book is in Very Good condition, with no apparent defects inside or out! The dust jacket is present and is in Very Good condition with some very minor edge/corner wear. A beautiful book! (6057)

Music and Its Makers Picture Book
Published in 1963 by the Oak Tree Press, London, the PICTURE BOOK OF MUSIC AND ITS MAKERS was written by Dale Cunningham and is part of the publisher’s Visual History Series.

Contents of the 64-page soft cover book range from ‘Silent Music: The Lost Beginnings,’ ‘The Middle Ages of Music,’ ‘The Renaissance,’ and ‘The Baroque Period,’ to Classicism, Romanticism, Opera and ‘New Directions.’

Many black/white photos illustrate the book, with pictures of musical instruments from early civilizations, examples of musical notation and theory, portraits of famed composers and organists, and more!

It’s a fascinating study – one the publisher says will open your ears and send you back to listening with greater attention and greater comprehension of the notes the music makers left behind!

The book is indexed and in Very Good condition, although there is some light edge wear to the covers. Inside pages have no apparent defects! (p1024)

Laughs from Erma Bombeck

Only longtime syndicated columnist Erma Bombeck could come up with the type of material you’ll find in her IF LIFE IS A BOWL OF CHERRIES – WHAT AM I DOING IN THE PITS? The 203-page hardbound book was published in 1978 by McGraw-Hill Book Co., New York.

In this uproarious encore to The Grass Is Always Greener over the Septic Tank, Erma confronts society's greatest challenge: Surviving the Seventies -- the fears, the worries, the anxieties. She shares with the reader some of her deepest concerns: discovering that lettuce has been fattening all along; getting into the Guinness Book of Records under "Pregnancy: Oldest Recorded Birth;" leaving the world suddenly and knowing that no one else in the family can replace the toilet-tissue spindle. Erma meditates on such philosophical dilemmas as who killed apple pie, and contemplates the futility of surviving a white sale only to find that all that's left are double top sheets and single contour bottoms.

She offers warm and wise advice on what to do when the supermarket discontinues your silverware pattern, and provides sane alternatives for the working wife trying to quick-thaw a Iamb chop under each armpit. The book abounds with down-to-earth practical suggestions for coping -- the art of financing sirloin tip at 6 percent on the unpaid balance for thirty-six months; the secret of making towel racks out of oversexed coat hangers; what to do when your ozone is in trouble; how to handle traumas, natural disasters, deep depression and readily adjust when they run out of extra-crispy chicken at the carry-out.

The book is vintage Bombeck … and will keep you laughing long after you put it down. This was Bombeck’s fifth book and it’s in Very Good condition with no apparent defects on covers or inside pages. The dust jacket is present and shows some very minor edge wear. A great gift for a housewife – or househusband – you know! (3742)

Shirer’s Life in America, 1904-1930
William L. Shirer, author of ‘The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich’ chronicles his life from the years 1904 to 1930, describing the people and places he encountered in 20th CENTURY JOURNEY: A MEMOIR OF A LIFE AND THE TIMES: THE START: 1904-1930.

Shirer's moving account of his formative years in Chicago, Cedar Rapids, and as a young reporter in Paris reveals his youth, setbacks, and rebellious insights and how they parallel rhythms of everyday life from 1904-1930.

Career, personality, and luck exposed young Shirer to many notables, and his portraits of acquaintances – William Jennings Bryan, Clarence Darrow, Grant Wood, Thurber, Hemmingway, Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Dorothy Thompson Sinclair Lewis, Isadora Duncan and others -- add spice to the narrative.

Some historians dismiss Shirer's writing, but his eyewitness accounts are illuminating and this first of three volumes is personally revealing. It is subtle autobiography that modestly offers insights into the process by which a naive American youth became a sophisticated European correspondent and ultimately one of the premier chroniclers and analysts of our time.

The 510-page hardbound book was published in 1976 by Little, Brown & Co., New York. It is illustrated with a great number of black/white photos. The book is in Very Good condition with no apparent defects, inside or out! There is minor creasing on dust jacket edges. (5834)

Journalist’s Prelude to WW2
Written by renowned newspaperman and pioneer radio broadcaster William Shirer, who witnessed many of the most historic events of history during the era, THE NIGHTMARE YEARS 1930-1940 is Volume 2 in his ‘20th Century Journey: Memoir of the Life and Times.’

Shirer, it seems, was in the right place at the right time for many earth-shaking events. Prior to the beginning of World War II, he met, knew, talked to and occasionally drank with Goring, Goebbels, Himmler, Hess, Heydrich, Ribbentrop, Eichmann and dozens of High Command officers. He even observed Hitler at first hand.

Most interesting is the personal material -- his career as a radio commentator ended when CBS fired him in 1947, and he reveals the dark role played by Edward R. Murrow. Shirer describes the struggle to support his family during the McCarthy years, then his dramatic success as a best-selling author with the 1960 publication of ‘The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.’

The 654-page hardbound book was published in 1984 by Little, Brown & Co., New York. It is illustrated with black/white photos. A previous owner’s name is handwritten on the inside front. There is some edge wear on the dust jacket. Otherwise, the book is in Very Good condition with no apparent defects, inside or out! (5835)

SCARCE! Tell It Like It Is, Black Press
Written by newspaper columnist Chuck Stone, who was called the 'Angry Young Man of the Negro Press,' TELL IT LIKE IT IS was published in this 1957 SECOND PRINTING by the Trident Press, New York.

In the hardbound book’s 211 pages are a compilation of Stone’s columns from his work for New York Age, the Washington Afro-American and the Chicago Defender.

A number of the columns, such as 'Why Negro Men Wear Mustaches' and 'Why Negro Men Like Big Legs,' have gone on to become a part of Negro folklore.

According to Stone, the bind in which the Negro constantly finds himself concerns the difference between what happened as reported by the white press, what happened as reported in the Negro press, and what really happened.

One of the rare correctives, over the years, has been the handful of extremely provocative Negro columnists who have tried to 'tell it like it was.' He's among the best of those!

And most of these columns on the American racial scene have been directed at The Establishment or at white society, with barbs of deft satire, biting prose and a wicked humor.

The book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some very minor wear on cover edges, but we see no other defects on either the covers or inside pages. The dust jacket is present and protected with a plastic cover.

It's a good one –- and quite difficult to find these days! (4436)

Jefferson & Hamilton: Bowers Classic
One of the classic works on the topic, JEFFERSON AND HAMILTON, THE STRUGGLE FOR DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA was written by Claude G. Bowers and published in 1926 by Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston, in this 7th impression.

In his preface, the author notes that the purpose of the book was not to make out a case for or against democracy, but to show how it came to the Republic, sometimes blundering and making a fool of itself on the way; to recreate, if possible, an heroic, picturesque, and lusty age; to make the men of the steel engravings flesh and blood; to stage the drama of a day when real giants trod the boards. And everything we’ve read shows that his efforts were successful!

Black/white plates (many full-page) include many players from the time -- Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Mrs. William Bingham, Fisher Ames, Robert Goodloe Harper, George Cabot, Gouverneur Morris, Albert Gallatin, Edward Livingston, William Branch Giles, and James Madison, as well as some contemporary political cartoons and facsimiles of important letters.

Condition of the 529-page hardbound book is Very Good, with very minor edge/corner/spine end wear to the covers. A previous owner’s book stamp is on inside front. A few inside pages have minor dog-ears, however, show no other apparent defects. A great look at an important part of our nation’s history. (5367)

NOW, Lauren BACALL, 1st Ed. Autobiography

Lauren Bacall -- role model and romantic heroine, movie star of five decades, two-time Tony Award- winning actress, a woman whose celebrity and glamour only increase with time. In her best-selling first book she told the story of her remarkable journey from Brooklyn girlhood to Hollywood and Broadway stardom. In this spirited, straightforward, exhilarating new book, NOW, she shares her experience of life. The 114-page hardbound book was published in this FIRST EDITION in 1994 by Alfred A.Knopf, New York.

According to the publisher, this is the Bacall we have all come to admire -- smart, funny, wise-talking to us openly, candidly. About work, its importance, its usefulness to her through the ups and downs and ups again of her career, its place in her life as a young bride, as a young mother, and today. About romance, about marriage, about loneliness. . About long friendships (and how they evolved over time) with Laurence Olivier, Slim Keith, John Huston, and Leonard Bernstein. She talks about the driving impulse to make a perfect home. . . about the marriages of children, about being a daughter, a mother, a grandmother. About being restless, about letting go-of possessions, of expectations. About new beginnings (necessary or surprising or joyous) over the years-and now.

Reading her book is like talking to a savvy best friend who has lived deeply and is frank (and funny) about what she has seen, what she has done, and what she has learned.

The book is in AS NEW condition with no defects apparent on either the book or the dust jacket! A wonderful gift or a great addition to your reading list! (3348/r13r)
