Meet Our Sages
Describing how the sages created the Mishnah, Talmud and other holy books of the oral Torah, MEET OUR SAGES by Jacob Neusner was published in 1980 by Behrman House Publishers, New York.

It was written for students at a 9- to 12-year-old reading level, and in its 128 pages are an introduction to the oral Torah – first, to the ancient sages who formed it; second to the Mishnah, its principal part; and third, to the Talmud, which explains the Mishnah.

Students meet the sages as people, learning what is a sage, how does a person become a sage, what does a sage do, and what does a sage think. Stories and study sheets for them are written in both English and Hebrew.

Condition of the book is Very Good/Fine, with no defects beyond a previous owner’s name label on inside front. There are no apparent defects inside or out!

A collection of stories, commentaries, and exercises based on the Biblical books of Genesis and Exodus, BEING TORAH – A FIRST BOOK OF TORAH TEXTS was written by Joel Lurie Grishaver. It was published in this 1986 revised edition by Torah Aura Productions, Los Angeles CA.

In the 224-page soft cover book are the stories of The Beginnings (Before the First Jew), Stories of Abraham, Stories of Isaac, Stories of Jacob, and the Story of the Exodus. These are crafted so second to fourth-grade students can apply their emerging reading skills to unlock their own discovered meanings in the Torah’s texts. They are true to the patterns, language and style of the original, while limiting the vocabulary and syntactic complexity of the English.

Listed as Number Five in the Falcon Book series, JEAN CRAIG, GRADUATE NURSE was written by Kay Littleton and published by World Publishing, Cleveland, in 1950.

The 217-page hardbound book is another heartwarming and happy story about the Craigs of Elmhurst … taking Jean from the end of her nurse’s training through the story of illness in her own family and later in epidemics that sweep her home village of Elmhurst. She is able, due to her nursing education, to give trained and efficient aid at the hospital.

Jean also watches the romance between Dr. Benson, the fresh young intern, and Eileen Gordon, the new supervisor of nurses, while her sister Kit is practically engaged. The joy of the family reaches a new peak, however, through the accomplishments of Doris, the youngest daughter.

It’s a great chapter book that the young girl reader will enjoy! Condition is Very Good, with very slight edge/corner wear to the covers and just slight tanning to inside pages. (6171/rAA)

Let’s Learn Prayer
Written by Sol Scharfstein and published in 1985 by KTAV Publishing,LET’S LEARN PRAYERis a textbook/workbook designed to teach prayer not as an isolated skill, but as a function of the total fiber of living Judaism: prayer, customs, Hebrew language and grammar.

Divided into 21 prayer units, the 160-page soft cover book offers exercises that can be performed without knowledge of Hebrew writing. Each of the units is subdivided into four teaching sections, structured to add to and enhance prayer reading, content comprehension, Hebrew language and ethical and valuing skills. They contain vocabulary lists and exercises, prayer units phrased into Hebrew and English with background information on the significance, history, usage and ethics of the prayer.

The book is in Very Good condition, with very minor edge/corner wear to the covers. It was part of a local Jewish education system and has the stamp of that previous owner on the endpaper. Still, an enjoyable, uplifting learning experience for the reader!

Rabbi's Bible: Early Prophets

Volume Two in the publisher’s The Rabbi’s Bible series,THE EARLY PROPHETS, was written by Solomon Simon and Morrison Bial and published in this 1966 soft cover edition by Behrman House, New York. Woodcuts used for illustrations are by Irwin Rosenhouse.

Designed for young adults, the 231-page book discusses Joshua, Samuel, Kings and Chronicles and features an abridged version of the Bible printed as continuous text across the top of the pages, with a continuing keyed commentary at the bottoms. These reinforce once another and weave together their separate strands of 3,000 years of Jewish wisdom and tradition.

The author notes that the Bible ‘never tells a story for its own sake, nor delivers stirring poetry for poetic grandeur alone; each verse is meant to teach a lesson, point a moral, record an important event or folk memory in the history of the Jewish people.’ With that in mind, he includes law, history, ritual and ceremony – ‘everything that bears on God and the Covenant, on ethical precepts and moral conduct, for there lies the Bible’s central core and wisdom: Live rightly or die.’
