Emile Zola’s NANA, 1937
Illustrated by Herbert R. Anderson and published in this 1937 softcover edition by Consolidated Book Publishers, Chicago, NANA was first published in 1880. Its advent aroused storm of criticism and comment and it sold prodigiously! Ever since, it has been one of the most widely read of the novels of this important French writer. This copy is marked as a ‘Facsimile of the Famous Paris Edition.’

Like its heroine, a courtesan who ruined men’s fortunes without making her own, NANA has the quality of glamour. It’s sensational in its revelation of the sordid dregs of French society and the author gathered a great deal of information about its world, occupied by aristocrats and prostitutes. The introduction here notes that he asked a friend to look at a person who had just died of smallpox so that he might know how to describe NANA on her deathbed.

Eight Anderson illustrations are used throughout the book to help tell the story and we’ve reproduced several here to give you an idea of their quality. The book itself is in Good+ condition, though it does show some signs of age and use. Covers show some scuffs and soil, with very minor edge/corner wear. The spine is missing a few pieces at both top and bottom, but remains intact, with no loose pages apparent inside. There is some light yellowing of the inside pages and some soil to page edges, but all are clean, crisp and easily readable. It’s a wonderful old book – and if you haven’t read Zola, it’s a good place to start! (4206)

Friendship, Distance, Experience, Time

A true, humorous and moving story told through the letters of two women nurturing a friendship as they are separated for a year by an ocean, . DEAR EXILE was written by Hilary Liftin and Kate Montgomery and published in this 1999 FIRST EDITION by Vintage Books, New York.

Close friends and former college roommates, promised to write when one of them accepts a Peace Corps assignment in Kenya. Over the course of a year, they exchanged a series of letters that tell – with warmth, humor and vivid personal detail – the story of two women navigating their post-college lives in very different ways. And beyond that, it tells of the friendships we are sometimes lucky enough to find and keep.

Kate is a teacher, meeting many of Africa’s unexpected realities -- poisonous snakes and vengeful cows – as well as the even more serious hazards -- a lack of money for education and a student body ready to revolt. Hilary is braving the singles scene in Manhattan, facing her own realities -- unworthy suitors, job anxiety and apartments.

The 208-page softcover book is in Very Good+ condition with only very minor edge wear to the covers. Inside pages show no apparent defects. (5279-25c)

Lying Awake, Power and Price of Faith

Mark Salzman's Lying Awake is a finely wrought gem that plumbs the depths of one woman's soul, and in so doing raises important questions about the power -- and price -- of faith.

In a Carmelite monastery outside present-day Los Angeles, Sister John's cloistered life of peace and prayer has been electrified by ever more frequent visions of God's radiance. Her life and writings have become examples of the rewards of devotion.

Yet her visions are accompanied by shattering headaches that compel Sister John to seek medical help. When her doctor tells her an illness may be responsible for her gift, Sister John faces a devastating choice: if her spiritual gifts are symptoms of illness, rather than grace, will a ‘cure’ mean the end of her visions and a soul once again at odds with the world?

The 192-page softcover book was published in 2001 by Vintage Books. It is in Very Good condition -- it looks AS NEW with some very minor cover scratches and residue from a label at top of front cover. (5618/r35)

Oldest Confederate Widow Tells All

Becoming an instant classic when it was first published, THE OLDEST LIVING CONFEDERATE WIDOW TELLS ALL features the story of 99-year-old Lucy Marsden, one of the most entertaining heroines in American literature.

Lucy married at the turn of the last century, when she was fifteen and her husband was fifty. If Colonel William Marsden was a veteran of the ‘War for Southern Independence’, Lucy became a ‘veteran of the veteran’ with a unique perspective on Southern history and Southern manhood. Her story encompasses everything from the tragic death of a Confederate boy soldier to the feisty narrator's daily battles in the Home -- complete with visits from a mohawk-coiffed candy-striper. It’s proof that brilliant, emotional storytelling remains at the heart of great fiction.

The 718-page softcover book was written by Allan Gurganus and published in this 1989 BOMC edition by Alfred A. Knopf, New York. The book is in Very Good condition, with no apparent defects on the covers or inside pages. (5641/r34)

You’ll Never Forget Dolores Price!
Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies.

When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.

That’s the cover description of Wally Lamb’s SHE’S COME UNDONE, an unusual coming-of-age odyssey that asks you to hitch a wild ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years. The 480-page softcover book was published in 1996 by Washington Square Press, New York.

Condition of the book, a selection of Oprah’s Book Club, is Very Good with only very minor edge/corner wear to the covers. Inside pages show no apparent defects. (5281-25c)

Look at Me! Uncorrected Proof Copy
Fashion model Charlotte Swenson has had a terrible car accident. The skin of her face is perfect, but behind it, eighty titanium screws hold together the bones that were shattered when she hit the windshield of her car.

She returns to New York, but is unrecognized by her peers and colleagues and unable to resume her former life. She finds herself floating invisibly through a world of fashion nightclubs and internet projects where image and reality are indistinguishable.

In following Charlotte’s life, you’ll see the difficulties of shaping an inner life in a culture obsessed with surfaces. Does ‘truth’ have any meaning in an era when reality itself has become a style? It’s a spellbinding story that captures the tenor of our times and offers an unsettling glimpse of the future!

We don’t see these all that often, but this is an uncorrected proof copy of Jennifer Egan’s LOOK AT ME. It was published in 2001 by Nan A. Talese, New York. The 405-page softcover book is in Very Good condition with only very minor edge/corner spine end wear to the covers. Inside pages show no apparent defects. (5284-25c)

The Republic of Love

THE REPUBLIC OF LOVE was written by Pulitzer Prize winner Carol Shields and published in this 1993 softcover edition by Penguin Books, New York.

The author introduces us to two shell-shocked veterans of the wars of the heart. There's Fay, a folklorist whose passion for mermaids has kept her from focusing on any one man. And right across the street there's Tom, a popular radio talk-show host who has focused a little too intently, having married and divorced three times.

In the comfortable city of Winnipeg, Fay and Tom go about their business, wondering about the possibilities of love and romance in the 20th century. Can Fay believe in lasting love? Will romantic love conquer all rational expectations? When true love strikes, neither questions it for a moment. But as reality intrudes, they discover that taking up residence in the Republic of Love requires more than a touch of luck and a lightning bolt.

The book is in Very Good condition, although it does show a couple of minor cover creases from being read once! Inside pages, however, show no apparent defects. (5627/r35)

Love in the Time of Cholera
Written by Nobel Prize winning Latin American novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez, LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA was translated from the Spanish by Edith Grossman and published in 1988 by Alfred A. Knopf, New York. It was a choice of Oprah's Book Club.

Set in a country on the Caribbean coast of South America, this is a story about a woman and two men and their entwined lives that are bound together for more than fifty years. It’s the story of Florentino Ariza, who waits more than half a century to declare his undying love to the beautiful Fermina Daza, whom he lost to Dr. Juvenal Urbino so many years before. Márquez has created a vividly absorbing fictional world, as lush and dazzling as a dream and as real and immediate as our own deepest longings.

The 348-page softcover book is in Very Good condition with no apparent defects – inside or out! (5639)
