Bulfinch Age of Fable, NICE COPY
Mythology is the handmaid of literature; and literature is one of the best allies of virtue and promoters of happiness. This book is not for the learned not, nor for the theologian, nor for the philosopher, but for the reader of English literature, of either sex, who wishes to comprehend the allusions so frequently made by public speakers, lecturers, essayists, and poets, and those which occur in polite conversation.

Those words are from the Preface of The Age of Fable, Or, Stories of Gods and Heroes, written by Thomas Bulfinch and published in this edition by Hurst & Co., New York. The book is not dated, but judging from the three-quarter leather and marble covers, decorated spine and gilt top edges, appears to be from the early 1900s.

All the familiar names are here: Prometheus and Pandora, June all and her rivals, Phaeton, Midas, Proserpine, Pygmalion, Venus, Adonis, the Halcyon birds, Cupid, Psyche, Narcissus, Hero and Leander, Minerva and more!

And their stories are written in any easily understood, yet fascinating way! There is a great drawing on the frontispiece, with other drawings in the text throughout the book.

The book is in very good condition with minor edge/corner/spine end wear. Leather on front edge of spine shows some roughness. Although a previous owner’s name is handwritten inside, we see no apparent defects on the inside pages. It’s a nice copy of a wonderful old book! (3959)

Keeping Your Civil Tongue!
When Edwin Newman was young, he was told to keep a civil tongue in his head -- i.e., shut up. He did, but since has expanded his understanding of what a civil tongue means. To him it means a language that is not bogged down in jargon, not studded with trick phrases, not weighed down with the gelatinous verbiage of Washington and the social sciences. It is direct, specific, concrete, vigorous, colorful, subtle, and imaginative, and as lucid and eloquent as we are able to make it.

In his first book, Strictly Speaking, Newman asked, Will America Be the Death of English? and replied, ‘Very likely.’ Thousands of happy readers of that best-seller wrote in to agree and to provide evidence from the press, television, the schools, bureaucracy (even the CIA), business, politics, sports, the social sciences, advertising, public relations, and the military.

The result is that Newman is speaking strictly again, and coming through the wry, in a second book of sense and sensibility that provokes thought and laughter. It is not a progress report -- how can progress be spoken of when a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President, refusing to ride in a chauffeur-driven limousine, says, ‘I cannot relate to that material possessory consciousness;’ when a college president is said to be effective in crisis-type settings; when a pitcher talks about his studiology of baseball, and when program notes at a Lincoln Center concert depict Dvorak as a late bloomer composition-wise?

A smog of jargon is settling on our fair land. Newman blows it away with sweet reason and sour comments. A CIVIL TONGUE
is high comedy in a serious cause.

His 207-page hardbound book was published in this 1976 Third Printing by Bobbs-Merrill, Indianapolis. The book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There are no apparent defects on the mylar-covered dust jacket, and the cover edges show only slight shelf wear. There is some tape residue on inside of covers from attaching the dust jacket. Protecting YOUR Property from Developers
Can a homeowner of modest means keep an industrial giant out of his neighborhood? Can he keep the bulldozer, power lines and highway builders from his door? In PROPERTY POWER, Mary Anne Guitar explains how to use grassroots campaigns to mobilize public opinion, how to pressure state and local lawmakers; and how to keep their land out of the spoilers’ hands in the first place. She emphasizes the importance of careful planning, of offering a constructive alternative to intensive development, of establishing local safeguards and seeing they are enforced. It’s filled with practical tested advice about what you can do now to protect the unique beauty and value of your community!

The 322-page hardbound book was published in this 1972 stated First Edition by Doubleday, Garden City, NY. It’s in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. The dust jacket is present and protected with a library-applied Mylar cover. (5543/25r)

Houghton Line – Catalog, Opinion

This is THE HOUGHTON LINE, VOLUME XXXVI, subtitled ‘Propaganda – A Modern Line of Thought’ and dated August 1926 through February 1927. Editor was Charles E. Carpenter.

The thoughtful, often light-hearted magazines in this bound volume begin with the editor’s ‘Heart to Heart Talk with Line Readers,’ followed by alternating pages of advertising for Houghton products and additional philosophical writings. It’s called ‘a publication devoted to topics likely to interest those not afraid of an idea,’ and ‘worth what one man thought (at the time he wrote them) and no more.’ Issues were published ‘spasmodically’ and mailed free to executives of industrial establishments.

The book makes great reading … and is in Good condition. Covers do show some heavy wear on edges/corners. Inside pages, however, appear clean, crisp and easy to read. We enjoyed reading this – you probably will too! (5661/rS)

Gay in America: A Time of Change

In a time when much of the discussion of gay life in America centers around AIDS, this compassionate and provocative book concentrates on men and women in the process of living their lives. It follows the author as he journeyed through small towns, farmlands, suburbs and cities in search of the diversity of gay and lesbian life in America in the late 1980s.

His lively and telling profiles reveal lesbians and gay men building communities and families, coming to terms with their religious beliefs, reconciling with their roots and, for the minorities whom he interviewed, coping with racism as well as homophobia.

Written by Neil Miller and published in 1990 by Harper & Brothers, New York, the book is titled IN SEARCH OF GAY AMERICA, Women and Men in a Time of Change.

Towns mentioned in the contents include Selma AL; Bunceton MO; Morgantown WV; Ogilvie MN; Fargo ND; Wolverton MN; Bismarck ND; Rapid City SD; Newton MA; Miami FL; Boston; San Francisco; New York City; Memphis TN; Minneapolis MN; San Antonio TX; Dover NH; Louisville KY; Washington DC; Key West FL; St. Paul MN; and Johnson City TN.

The 309-page softcover book is in Very Good condition with no apparent defects, inside or out. It’s a rich and thought-provoking volume! (5296)

Priorities for Human Survival Can man survive the wonders of his own creation? Have all his mighty works been pointing to oblivion? This is being seriously argued by eminent and respected scholars.
