When a Jew Prays
Part of the publisher’s ‘Jewish Value Series,’WHEN A JEW PRAYS was designed for the young adult reader and provides a Judaic guide to prayer. Discussed are questions of why man prays, different kinds of prayer, formal and informal ways of praying, and the importance of prayer in one’s life.

The 192 page hardbound book was written by Seymour Rossel and published in 1973 by Behrman House, New York. Illustrations – in both color and black/white – are by Erika Weihs. It is written in English, with an index to prayers, list of legends and stories and a list of prayers given in the English versions in the back of the book.

Condition of the book is Very Good, although there is some light edge/corner/spine end wear to the covers. Unfortunately, the final index page has been torn from the book. Still, the remainder is clean, crisp and ready to read!

Hours with the Bible, Moses to Judges
HOURS WITH THE BIBLE, FROM MOSES TO JUDGES; or THE SCRIPTURES IN LIGHT OF MODERN DISCOVERY AND KNOWLEDGE was written by Cunningham Geikie and published in this 1888 edition by John B. Alden, New York.

In the book’s 314 pages are a lengthy series of chapters dealing with those books of the Bible’s Old Testament. Topics include: the land of Goshen; Egypt before the Hebrew sojourn; oppression in Egypt; Moses; the plagues of Egypt; the Tenth Plague and the Exodus; March to Sinai; the Wilderness; Eve of the Conquest; Conquest of Canaan; Time of the Judges; and Gideon to Samson. The information is fascinating – reading much like a descriptive novel, and holding the reader’s attention! And illustrations throughout make it even more enjoyable!

The book is fully indexed and in Good+ condition, although it shows some signs of its age and use. Leather-edged covers show some scuffs and there is minor edge/corner/spine end wear. The spine itself is missing from the book. A previous owner’s bookplate is glued to the wonderful marbled endpapers, with another name handwritten on the following page. The inside pages are clean, crisp, tightly bound and very readable, although they are showing some age-yellowing. It’s a good one! (3843)

Gospel of St. John, Songs, Verses
This is the illustrated special feature edition of THE GOSPEL OF ST. JOHN, published in this 1917 FIRST EDITION by the Free Tract Society, Los Angeles, CA. According to the publisher, the valuable information contained in this little (2.75-inch by 4.75-inch) vest pocket companion cannot be estimated in dollars and cents. If the directions are carefully followed, it will not only lead to an honorable and successful life here, but will also be a sure Guide to the final haven of rest which Jesus Himself has gone to prepare for us …

And, the 112-page softcover book has a great deal to offer. In addition to the text of the Gospel of St. John, it has First Psalm; the Lord’s Prayer; Ninety-First Psalm; Scripture Gems; Select Quotations from Every Book of the Bible; Selections from the Sermon on the Mount; the Simple Plan of Salvation; Ten Commandments; Thirteenth Chapter of I Corinthians; Twenty-third Psalm; What Great Men Say of the Bible; and Worlds of Comfort and Admonition. These are followed by the words to eight Christian hymns.

Pictures of a variety of religious scenes are scattered throughout the pages. Condition of this neat little tract book is Good+, with some scuffing on the front cover where apparently some tape was removed. The inside pages are yellowed from age, but don’t appear to have other damage. All in all, it’s a nice addition to your collection of tracts, or your religious library! (3805)

The Mitzvot: The Commandments and Their Rationale
Described as a pioneering study in the English language of the traditional rationale behind the 613 Commandments (Mitzvot) in the Torah (the five books of Moses), THE MITZVOT: THE COMMANDMENTS AND THEIR RATIONALE was written by Abraham Chill and published in this 1974 hardbound edition by Keter Books, Jerusalem. It was printed in Israel.

The author draws on the considerable Hebrew literature to present the interpretations of the great rabbinical thinkers on each Commandment through the ages. Excerpts from the key commentaries are given in English translation.

The 508-page book is indexed and provides a ready reference for systematic study of the Mitzvot and for the layman requiring additional information on a particular Commandment. According to tradition, the observation of these 613 Commandments constitutes the basis of the Jewish way of life.

Condition of the book is Very Good, although there is some light wear on edges and corners. It is ex lib from a local Jewish educational institution and has the usual library markings on page edges and a card pocket in the front. The dust jacket is present and shows some edge and corner wear. Still, it’s a great book in very useful condition!

How to Abolish Poverty
Edited by R. M. MacIver and published in 1965 by the Institute for Religious and Social Studies, THE ASSAULT ON POVERTY examines the wave of public plans for relieving the plight of the poor, then asks for a careful reconsideration of the part the individual plays in the movement.

The resources to abolish poverty are available through science and technology, says MacIver; the obstacle is the inertia, the lack of imagination and concern among those who have these resources in hand.

The writers confronting the subject here deal with such problems as dependent families, children of poverty, the unemployed and the unskilled, the aged, the sick. They examine the various methods by which aid reaches these people, and what effect it has, in turn, upon responsibility and initiative. In spotlighting the kind of personal action and spirit that are essential to a successful assault on poverty, the book also points to ways in which these personal forces may be aroused.

The 154-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. We see no other apparent defects on the book or on the mylar-covered dust jacket. (5858)

Teaching the Bible Story, 1950s
TEACHING THE BIBLE STORY was written by Alfred Schmieding, professor at Concordia Teachers College in Illinois, and published in 1935 by the Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, MO.

The 143-page hardbound book treats the Bible Story as a part of the Bible; the basis is that Scriptures are divinely and supernaturally inspired and revealed.

Chapters the author says are basic include the Opportunity: the Need for Religious Instruction; Basic Methods for Teaching the Bible; Finding the Message; Presenting the Story; and Problems of Instruction.

Additional chapters, which he notes are supplementary and often leading to controversy, include Sympathetic Understanding of the Children We Teach; Supplementary Methods for Teaching the Story; Effective Use of the Unit in Teaching the Bible Story; and Illustrations and Standards of Evaluation.

There is a complete index and a selected and annotated bibliography. The whole book is designed to appeal to the trained and experienced educator, as well as to the untrained beginner, and to serve as a helpful instructional aid in courses on various levels, including training classes for Sunday school teachers in the local church.

Condition is Very Good, with a few minor cover scuffs, slight color fading to the front and a gift inscription handwritten on the front endpaper. Inside pages are without apparent defects!

It’s a useful addition to your church library or a great gift for the new Sunday School teacher! (3817)

English Cathedrals in Color!
For a thousand years, cathedrals have been an enduring and characteristic feature of the English scene. They have survived the centuries and are now more highly valued than ever.

With a 39-page introductory essay by C. L. S. Linnell on the origins of cathedrals, their changing use from monastic to present times, and the history of how and by whom they were built, ENGLISH CATHEDRALS IN COLOUR is made even more enjoyable with 24 full-page color photographs of 17 cathedrals by A. F. Kersting.

The color photographs, most specially taken for this book, give an extraordinarily vivid impression of these noble buildings: Salisbury, Wells, Gloucester, St. Paul's, Durham, Norwich, Worcester, St. Alban's, Winchester, Canterbury, Lincoln, Ely, Exeter, Lichfield, Peterborough and York. In addition to the more familiar views of nave, west front or choir, the pictures include a number of close-ups of, for example, medieval stained glass at Canterbury, a colored effigy at Winchester, Tudor and Baroque monuments at Gloucester, and the crypt at Worcester.

And Linnell’s historical and architectural information gives added meaning equally to the pictures or to a visit to the cathedrals themselves.

The 94-page hardbound book was printed in the Netherlands and published in 1960 by B. T. Batsford, London. It is in Very Good condition, with no apparent defects on the covers or inside pages. There is a label with a previous owner’s name on the first endpaper. The dust jacket is present, but shows some wear and tears on the edges. (6100)
