When a Jew Prays

The 192 page hardbound book was written by Seymour Rossel and published in 1973 by Behrman House, New York. Illustrations – in both color and black/white – are by Erika Weihs. It is written in English, with an index to prayers, list of legends and stories and a list of prayers given in the English versions in the back of the book.

Condition of the book is Very Good, although there is some light edge/corner/spine end wear to the covers. Unfortunately, the final index page has been torn from the book. Still, the remainder is clean, crisp and ready to read!

Hours with the Bible, Moses to Judges HOURS WITH THE BIBLE, FROM MOSES TO JUDGES; or THE SCRIPTURES IN LIGHT OF MODERN DISCOVERY AND KNOWLEDGE was written by Cunningham Geikie and published in this 1888 edition by John B. Alden, New York.

In the book’s 314 pages are a lengthy series of chapters dealing with those books of the Bible’s Old Testament. Topics include: the land of Goshen; Egypt before the Hebrew sojourn; oppression in Egypt; Moses; the plagues of Egypt; the Tenth Plague and the Exodus; March to Sinai; the Wilderness; Eve of the Conquest; Conquest of Canaan; Time of the Judges; and Gideon to Samson. The information is fascinating – reading much like a descriptive novel, and holding the reader’s attention! And illustrations throughout make it even more enjoyable!

The book is fully indexed and in Good+ condition, although it shows some signs of its age and use. Leather-edged covers show some scuffs and there is minor edge/corner/spine end wear. The spine itself is missing from the book. A previous owner’s bookplate is glued to the wonderful marbled endpapers, with another name handwritten on the following page. The inside pages are clean, crisp, tightly bound and very readable, although they are showing some age-yellowing. It’s a good one! (3843)

World-Wide Racism, 1940s

Taking a wide view of race relations, Edmund D. Soper’s RACISM, A WORLD ISSUE examines much more than racial minorities in the United States.

Its roots were in a seminar on ‘Race’ held in Chicago in 1942-43, preparing for a conference on the ‘Christian Bases of World Order’ scheduled for the following spring. Following that, and another meeting, Soper assembled the information to compile this report, which was published in 1947 by Abingdon-Cokesbury Press, New York.

Chapters cover Races of the World; Racism: Fact and Problem; Nazi Dogma of the Master Race; Russia: Many Peoples, One Nation; Group and Race Tensions in India; The Far East and the West; The Island World of the Pacific; Black and White in Africa; Brazil: The Fading Out of the Color Line; Race Patterns in Spanish America; Racial Minorities in the U.S.; The Negro in American Life; Racism and World Order; the Christian Faces the Color Bar.

It’s a very interesting study – and flavored more with a religious view than most of the other titles on this topic. Condition of the book is Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. The covers show wear to edges, corners and spine ends, with a small area of the front having something of a waffled effect. Both hinges are broken, but the binding is still tight. A few inside pages have some tears on the outer margins, evidently where the pages were uncut and someone was careless in cutting them apart. Still, the information is here – and the book is a difficult one to find. In many ways, racism hasn’t changed too much since this one was written … take a look! (4390)

Gospel of St. John, Songs, Verses This is the illustrated special feature edition of THE GOSPEL OF ST. JOHN, published in this 1917 FIRST EDITION by the Free Tract Society, Los Angeles, CA. According to the publisher, the valuable information contained in this little (2.75-inch by 4.75-inch) vest pocket companion cannot be estimated in dollars and cents. If the directions are carefully followed, it will not only lead to an honorable and successful life here, but will also be a sure Guide to the final haven of rest which Jesus Himself has gone to prepare for us … And, the 112-page softcover book has a great deal to offer. In addition to the text of the Gospel of St. John, it has First Psalm; the Lord’s Prayer; Ninety-First Psalm; Scripture Gems; Select Quotations from Every Book of the Bible; Selections from the Sermon on the Mount; the Simple Plan of Salvation; Ten Commandments; Thirteenth Chapter of I Corinthians; Twenty-third Psalm; What Great Men Say of the Bible; and Worlds of Comfort and Admonition. These are followed by the words to eight Christian hymns. Pictures of a variety of religious scenes are scattered throughout the pages. Condition of this neat little tract book is Good+, with some scuffing on the front cover where apparently some tape was removed. The inside pages are yellowed from age, but don’t appear to have other damage. All in all, it’s a nice addition to your collection of tracts, or your religious library! (3805/Ac)

Lovingkindness: Buddhism, Happiness

LOVINGKINDNESS: THE REVOLUTIONARY ART OF HAPPINESS was written by Sharon Salzberg, a meditation teacher and founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, and published in 1995 by Shambhala Press, Boston.

The 193-page softcover book explains how the Buddhist path can help individuals discover their inner joy and discusses simple Buddhist teachings and suggestions for meditation.

‘Lovingkindness’ meditation focuses on a Buddhist practice that emphasizes feelings of love, happiness, and compassion and involves four phrases: ‘May I be free from danger’; ‘May I have mental happiness’; "May I have physical happiness’; ‘May I have ease of well-being.’

Other exercises in this book are intended to increase your connection to and intimacy with others, by directing these positive sentiments outward toward specific people or the world in general.

This book will probably be best appreciated by those who have some experience with meditation already, but anyone can appreciate the way it takes a practice often considered mystical and turns it into a means of creating joy. (5633/r35)

The Mitzvot: The Commandments and Their Rationale
Described as a pioneering study in the English language of the traditional rationale behind the 613 Commandments (Mitzvot) in the Torah (the five books of Moses), THE MITZVOT: THE COMMANDMENTS AND THEIR RATIONALE was written by Abraham Chill and published in this 1974 hardbound edition by Keter Books, Jerusalem. It was printed in Israel.

The author draws on the considerable Hebrew literature to present the interpretations of the great rabbinical thinkers on each Commandment through the ages. Excerpts from the key commentaries are given in English translation.

The 508-page book is indexed and provides a ready reference for systematic study of the Mitzvot and for the layman requiring additional information on a particular Commandment. According to tradition, the observation of these 613 Commandments constitutes the basis of the Jewish way of life.

Condition of the book is Very Good, although there is some light wear on edges and corners. It is ex lib from a local Jewish educational institution and has the usual library markings on page edges and a card pocket in the front. The dust jacket is present and shows some edge and corner wear. Still, it’s a great book in very useful condition!
