1939 Gates Belt Guide, Refrigeration We’ve seen these for agricultural and automobile belts, this is the first we’ve seen of the GATES BELT GUIDE FOR REFRIGERATORS, WASHING MACHINES, STOKERS AND OIL BURNERS, WATER PUMPS, WOODWORKING AND OTHER MACHINES. The 144-page softcover book was published in 1939 by the Gates Rubber Co., Denver, Colorado.

Listing consumer net prices, and including numerous ads for these and other Gates products, the book includes some domestic and commercial product names we haven’t heard in ages.

There are Adams-Campbell, Absopure, Apex, Atwater Kent, Carrier-Brunswick, California Electric, Crosley, and Fairbanks-Morse refrigerators, as well as more common names such as Frigidaire, Fedders, General Electric, Halsey, Gibson, Hotpoint and others.

Washing machine manufacturers include the usual Bendix, Speed Queen (then Barlow & Seelig), Kelvinator, Kenmore, Montgomery Ward, Maytag and Westinghouse, as well as those by Airplane, Aladdin, Cloverleaf, Cyclone, Dexter, Dutch Maid, Happy Day, Hiawatha and more!

Even other now-antique names (as well as some modern ones) fill the pages for water pumps, beer pumps, stokers, oil burners, furnace blowers, wood working and other machines.

The belts are listed by manufacturer name, by belt number, by belt length and in an interchange list. It’s an extensive list – and seems to provide valuable reference information for anyone who is restoring or collecting such machines. Thumb guides index the book.

Condition of the book is Good+ with some soil on the outside. A few inside pages have small dogears on the corners, but all are clean, crisp and easily read. It’s a great one! (4649)

When You Just Can't Think of THAT Word!

A conventional dictionary lists words alphabetically and gives you their meanings. The REVERSE DICTIONARY lists an alphabetical array of meanings that lead you to words you couldn’t quite remember (or never knew!) That’s where it got its name!

What do you do if you know there’s a word for something but you can’t think of what it is? Your grope, you guess, you reach. What is the word for a sentence that reads the same was backwards as forward? Look here under the b’s for backward (the clue) and there you find the target: palindrome. It’s a great help when you struggle to remember that word which just won’t come to mind!

This 277-page hardbound book, written by Theodore Bernstein with Jane Wagner, was published in 1975 by the New York Times Book Co., New York.

It’s in Very Good condition with no defects inside or out. The dust jacket is present, but shows some edge/corner wear. This is a great help to writers or just those of us who have a bit of trouble remembering! (3616)

Old Farmer's Almanac: 200th Anniversary

This is the 200th Anniversary Issue, Special Commemorative Edtion of THE OLD FARMER'S ALMANAC 1992, still marked as 'by' Robert B. Thomas.

In reality, schoolteacher and amateur astronomer Thomas published his first Farmer's Alamanac when George Washington was president. Ever since, Americans have been drawn to the familiar yellow cover with Thomas' name on it for a yearly dose of wit, wisdom and, of course, the accurate weather forecasts.

This hardbound copy is a genuine piece of Americana -- the 200th Anniversary issue of the oldest continuously published periodical in North America.

In addition to the usual fare -- the weather forecasts, planting tables, zodiac secrets and recipes -- this one contains topics such as: 'What else is 200 years old in 1992?', 'If the World Were a Village of 1,000 People,' 'Weird Competitions You Can Enter,' 'The Alphabetical Folklore of Herbs,' 'The Oldest Family Farm in America,' 'How to Grow a 1,000-Pound Pumpkin,' 'Our Bicentennial Weather Forecasting Quiz,' and 'How to Become Immortal.'

The 312-page hardbound book was published by Yankee Publishing, Inc. It is in FINE condition with no defects, as is the accompanying colorful dust jacket. It's a nice piece of memorabilia! (1304)

Gadgets & Wrinkles, Ingenuity at Sea

The complicated business of sailing a boat efficiently and the equally complicated business of living aboard her comfortably have called forth man's ingenuity and inventiveness.

Any mechanical device to which that inventiveness gives rise is called, in the sailor's argot, a GADGET.

On the other hand, any method of procedure which it develops is known as a WRINKLE.

GADGETS AND WRINKLES, A COMPENDIUM OF MAN’S INGENUITY AT SEA is a description of the ingenuity and inventiveness of the sailors of all nations and all ages. But the book is devoted mainly to gadgets and wrinkles used by modern yachtsmen on modern yachts.

The Marconi rig, the penchant for ocean racing, the increased use of wire and winches, the invasion of new materials, the discoveries in aerodynamics, the borrowings from the motor car and the airplane, the employment of power and electricity, and the fad for racing dinghies have brought about a veritable tidal wave of yacht invention. This book lists and explains more than five hundred gadgets and wrinkles that have proved useful in the handling of a yacht.

Written by H. A. Calahan and published in this 1938 FIRST PRINTING by the Macmillan Co., New York, this 311 page hardbound book is illustrated with numerous black/white photos and drawings.

It’s in Very Good condition, with only light edge/corner wear to the covers. Inside pages are clean, complete and very readable. The endpapers show slight foxing and a previous owner’s name is handwritten on front endpaper. The dustjacket is present, but has some edge/corner wear.

It is a book to make poor sailors into good sailors; to make any sailor a better sailor! (3485)
