Chinese Agriculture Development
Listed as #56 of the ‘Illinois Studies in the Social Sciences’ series, THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHINESE AGRICULTURE, 1950-1959 was written by Peter Schran and published in 1969 by the University of Illinois Press, Urbana.
According to the author’s Introduction, the book covers methods used by the Chinese communists to encourage industrial development by developing agriculture. Conscious of the costs of developing agriculture by modern means, they attempted to implement such technical improvements through social reorganization.
Although these social and technical changes could have yielded the desired results, he says, they evidently underestimated the ideological and the technical inertia of the peasants … and they failed in their attempts to develop production dualistically.
The 238-page hardbound book offers numerous charts and graphs to illustrate the study. It’s in Very Good condition with no apparent defects inside or out, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. An interesting view! (5943)

Farms & Farmers in an Urban Age
A 1960's study of the emerging giant efficient American farms and the need to move toward enduring solution to the farm support problem is included in Farms and Farmers in an Urban Age, written by Edward Higbee and published in this 1963 apparent FIRST EDITION by the 20th Century Fund, New York.
The author notes: Vast changes are in progress in America. The dreary round of more price supports for farm crops leading to more overproduction, with more surpluses to store and more public money to be spent has to end somewhere!
The 183-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is Ex Lib with the usual library markings. We see no defects on either the covers or inside pages. The dust jacket is present and has a protective cover, although dust jacket ends are glued inside covers. (4556)

Solving The World Food Problem
THE WORLD FOOD PROBLEM - A GUARDEDLY OPTIMISTIC VIEW was written by Willard W. Cochrane and published in 1969 by Thomas Y. Crowell Co., New York.
Outlining a practical and impressive program for solving the world's food problem -- a program that all nations of the world can implement -- Dr. Cochrane shows how the technology of today can produce not only the quantity of food needed, but, more importantly, the types of food needed by the developing nations of the world. He shows the part America can play in aiding this program with wise and consistent technical and financial assistance and with a reduction of trade barriers and a liberalizing of trade policies.
As a University of Minnesota professor and with many years of experience in India, where food problems make headlines, Cochrane has written a book that's not just intended for technical readers, but for informed laypersons who are concerned with the problem and may in some way contribute to its solution. It includes maps and charts that clarify many areas and is fully indexed.
Condition of this interesting volume is Very Good, although it is ex lib and has the usual library markings. There are very slight scuffs on the covers, but no other defects we can find - inside or out. It's a good one! (1818/b)

The Riddle of American Agriculture
Surplus has long been the unsolved riddle of American agriculture. It appears untouchable, getting bigger and costlier from year to SURyear. Approaching the problem as an economist, but with a minimum of economic jargon, Michigan State University professor Alan R. Bird wrote SURPLUS - The Riddle of American Agriculture.
The 128-page hardbound book was published in 1962 by Springer Publishing Co., New York, and tries to give perspective to the problem and what can be done to solve it.
Bird analyzes programs which have been put into place to cope with the surplus and shows why they were doomed to fail. In the process, he disposes of 'canned' figures and arguments that are often used to sway citizens and lawmakers.
Along the way, he discusses new uses for American farm products, why they can't be sold or given away overseas, why surpluses aren't troublesome during wartime, why we need to grow less food and remove more farmers from their land. He asks about slowing technology, cutting food prices, and adding marketing controls for foods. His questions and answers are fascinating!
The book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. The covers show some light scuffs and the spine is sun-faded. The dust jacket is not present, but a flap of information from it is glued inside the front cover. (2046/b)
