Group and Family Therapy
The 52 articles in PROGRESS IN GROUP AND FAMILY THERAPY were selected to provide a comprehensive overview of significant theoretical and clinical innovations in group and family therapy. Edited by Clifford Sager and Helen Singer Kaplan, the 935-page hardbound book was published in 1972 by Brunner/Mazel, New York and is apparently a first edition.
The book is organized into five areas: Group Therapy; Family Therapy; The Treatment of Marital and Sexual Problems; Special Patient Populations; and Applications and Extensions. Each area features a brief introduction to suggest cross references to related articles, including those that present alternative or contrasting viewpoints.
According to the editors, there is widespread optimism regarding the effectiveness of family and group approaches to psychiatric treatment ... and they hold promise, not only for improving the treatment of the mentally ill, but for enhancing the lives of non-patients.
The book is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some very minor edge/corner/spine end wear to the covers. Inside pages, however, have no apparent defects. (6007/r22)

Sensitivity Training, Encounter Movement
Written by Kurt W. Back, BEYOND WORDS: SENSITIVITY TRAINING AND THE ENCOUNTER MOVEMENT was published in 1972 by the Russell Sage Foundation, New York.
According to the author, people have always gone on pilgrimages. Searching for a change in routine, a: transformation of themselves, relief from distress and illness, they have also sought the strong emotions which could suddenly change their mundane existence into a vivid and unique experience. Today's pilgrims, for whom the old shrines have lost their magic, seek strong group experiences. Thus, on weekends and during the summers they journey to places that call themselves by different names: T-Group centers, encounter group centers, and human potential centers, among others. For many, the encounter movement has become a vital way of life. This 266-page hardbound book traces the history of this movement, its shapes and varieties, and the background of its successes and failures. The author’s approach is neither one of wide-eyed admiration nor hostility. Instead, he has written a book that provides the first long, hard look at sensitivity training as a social phenomenon.
From its fortuitous beginnings the movement is followed through its inception at Bethel, its growth across the country, its new centers in California, to its transformation into an almost religious exercise based on the scientific ethos. This development is related to the peculiar conditions of the last quarter century.
The movement has acquired its own mythos. Back examines the interplay of the conflicting aims of self-expression and change, and shows how these contradictory aims have affected the ramifications of the movement in theory, in management, in recreation, and in education. Results emerging from studies on effects of sensitivity training indicate a recurrent pattern of great immediate enthusiasm followed by little permanent beneficial effect.
Finally, the book assesses the overall impact of the movement, its relations to science, its possible changes and its portent as a symptom of the state of society.
It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. The dust jacket has some minor edge/corner wear. No other defects are apparent. (5895/r14)

1968s, Halfway House Movement
THE HALFWAY HOUSE MOVEMENT, A SEARCH FOR SANITY was written by Harold L. Rausch, with Charlotte Rausch, and published in 1968 by Appleton Century Crofts, New York, as part of its Century Psychology Series.
The 247-page hardbound book is about halfway houses – not a panacea for those too psychologically troubled to live in ordinary society, but structures that can mitigate their suffering.
Rausch includes chapters dealing with the development and initiation of halfway houses; their structure, operations; and future. He covers the ecological and physical features of the halfway house; legal and financial structure; administrative structures; tasks; rules for residents; work; therapy, social environment; time of stay; and where residents go when they leave the halfway house. It’s a well-explained and well thought-out examination of the concept.
Condition of this book is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some very minor edge/corner/spine end wear, yet inside pages show no apparent defects. It’s a good one – and a book that’s becoming difficult to find. (3650)

1950s Juveniles in Delinquent Society
Milton L. Barron of the College of the City of New York wrote THE JUVENILE IN DELINQUENT SOCIETY, which was published in this 1956 hardbound 3rd edition by Alfred A. Knopf, New York.
Part One of the 347-page book defines delinquency, not only as a social problem but as a unique concept.
Part Two is a survey of causes, psychology, the family, peer groups, mass media and the delinquent culture of American society. The key chapter goes into detail on the central theme of the book.
Part Three discusses societal reactions to delinquency, ranging from detection and detention and the juvenile court to various types of disposition and treatment of cases, and, lastly, delinquency control and prevention.
The book is illustrated with not only the usual tables and charts, but with eight drawings from paintings and engravings by English artist William Hogarth. They're quite nice and illustrate the world of delinquency that Hogath himself observed in 18th century London! An interesting touch!
The book is in Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. The front hinge is broken and covers show some wear to the edges/corners and spine ends. Inside pages, however, are clean, crisp and without serious problems - ready for reading!

Children: Categories, Labels & Consequences
Edited by Nicholas Hobbs, this First Edition hardbound was published in 1975 by Jossey-Bass, San Francisco. The Futures of Children: Categories, Labels and Their Consequences is a Report on the Project on Classification of Exceptional Children.
The project called attention to a serious national problem -- the labeling of children as delinquent, retarded, hyperkinetic, mentally ill, emotionally disturbed and other classifications.
Its objectives were to increase public understanding of the problems associated with the classification and labeling of children who are handicapped, disadvantaged or delinquent; to provide a rationale for public policy; and to improve professional practices of those responsible for the well-being of exceptional children.
This book provides an overview of the study, as well as discussion of the social functions of categories and labels, diagnostic categories and procedures, a proposed model for classifying children, possible negative effects of treatment programs, classification and legal status, integration of services for exceptional children, recommendations and priorities, roles of the parent and the professional, and participants in the project.
In its 339 pages are a comprehensive plan for linking services with the needs of individual children and suggestions that the public schools are the natural centering point for integrating all services and providing alternatives to institutionalization.
The book is the culmination of years of work and experience and provides guidance for those who want to guarantee the health and happiness of exceptional children.
Condition of this still-timely book is Very Good, although it is ex lib and has the usual library markings. The covers show no defects we can find and are protected by the dust jacket and its protective cover. There is some underlining on the dust jacket's back end flap, but this appears to be pencil and easily erasable.
Overall, it's a fascinating look at how the labels we place on our children can actually harm them … and it provides answers we all should consider!! (1310/rB)

Companionship Therapy for Children
Companionship Therapy, a book in the Jossey-Bass Behavioral Science Series, was written by Gerald Goodman and published in 1972 by Jossey-Bass Publishers, San Francisco.
The 298-page hardbound book documents the first rigorous, large-scale study of nonprofessional therapy in a community setting.
The format of the study was an inexpensive two-person companionship that utilized college students -- the most promising source of non-professional manpower -- and involved troubled children -- the group with fewest therapy services.
Descended from Big-Brother programs, the project paired troubled fifth- and sixth-grade boys with male undergraduate students. The author shows how the boys and their counselors were selected, how the companionship was supervised, and what the project accomplished. Implications drawn from the changes observed in the participants are clearly presented.
An important finding is that companionship therapy works best in subgroups with special characteristics: when withdrawn, passive boys, for example, are paired with outgoing counselors or when black counselors are paired with white boys.
A number of innovations in organizing nonprofessional therapy programs were tested in the project, so this book is a valuable guide for program administrators, students and professionals looking of new procedures.
The book will be particularly helpful in solving problems connected with establishing community intervention procedures: selecting therapeutically talented students; screening troubled children within a school system; initiating and terminating nonprofessional therapies; utilizing semiautomated procedures for supervising visits; studying interpersonal processes; forming pairings; and assessing therapeutic gains.
It's an effective general manual for the use of nonprofessionals in the mental health field.
The book's condition is Very Good, although it is ex lib and has the usual library markings. We see no defects on the book, although the dust jacket, which has a protective cover, shows some residue from the glue used to hold it to the book.
