Employment, Unemployment in US, Canada
A searching analysis of the causes of unemployment and the most effective means of attaining full employment is in Paul H. Casselman’s ECONOMICS OF EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT, published in 1955 by the Public Affairs Press, Washington DC. It is, says the author, a new approach that is based upon a blend of economic theory, economic policy, and extra-economic considerations.

Special attention is given to the most practical facets of the subject and to treatment of aspects of employment and unemployment which have been previously been neglected. Detailed consideration is given to the employment and unemployment problems of economically advanced countries such as the U.S. and Canada.

Among the topics: factors governing employment, seasonal variations in employment, the business cycle and employment, unemployment other than cyclical and seasonal, part-time employment and under-employment, and employment forecasting.

The 183-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, despite being ex lib with the usual library markings. The covers show some minor corner wear and slight scuffing; inside pages are without apparent defects. (4411)

1916 German Ruling Caste, Frenzied Trade
This is the authorized translation of Maurice Millioud’s THE RULING CASTE AND FRENZIED TRADE IN GERMANY, published in 1916 by Houghton Mifflin, Boston.

A classic look at the economic situations leading to World War I, the author considers three questions: What was the national sentiment that supported the German government in going to war? What were the aims and policy of German expansion in the years before the war? And third, what made the German ruling classes decide that their ends could not be attained without war?

The 159-page hardbound book is quite difficult to find in today’s market – and this copy is in Good+ condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show very minor corner and spine end wear. The front hinge is loose, but all inside pages are still tightly bound, clean and crisp. (5605)

Economics of the Hour
Dedicated with the author’s lengthy explanation To the Working Mothers of England, J. St.Joe Strachey’s ECONOMICS OF THE HOUR was published in 1923 by Putnam’s Sons, New York.

In the 234-page hardbound book, Strachey writes to four topics: the Commonsense of Economics, (cause of value, economic aphorisms); Partners of Industry, (dread of a profit, men and machines, strikes, the third partner in industry, state and labour, dividing the cake, commerce/labor and the creed of Christ); Four Questions of the Hour, (the broken link of commerce, a levy on capital, remedies for unemployment, the problem of debt); and Charity, True and False, (The C.O.S., the Old Poor Law, the New Poor Law.) It’s well-written and easily understood!

Condition of this difficult-to-find book is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is very minor wear to edges/corners and spine ends. Inside pages show no apparent defects. It’s an interesting view from early in the 1900s! (4198)

Investing in Wages, Eliminating Lean Years
Written by Albert L. Deane and Henry K. Norton, INVESTING IN WAGES: A PLAN FOR ELIMINATING THE LEAN YEARS was published in 1932 by Macmillan, New York.

The 155-page hardbound book offers a businessman’s plan for giving work ‘to everyone who wants it, and by sustaining the national production at the highest profitable level, to eliminate the lean years which have periodically plagued our national life.’ It is placed in its proper economic setting by Norton, an economist.

Published when the Great Depression still gripped the nation and seven- to eight-million American workers were unemployed, the book provides a close-up view of the times and some possible solutions.

Condition is Very Good, although the book is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is very minor edge/corner/spine end wear to the covers. A scratch on the edges has left minor indentations on the edge of several pages; yet all inside pages are still clean, crisp and easily readable. (5582)

1878, Sturtevant, Science of Wealth
Julian Sturtevant, professor of political economy and former president of Illinois College, wrote ECONOMICS, OR THE SCIENCE OF WEALTH, published in 1878 by Putnam's Sons, New York. The 343-page hardbound book was written, says the author, to present more accurate definitions of the basics of economics -- to present the whole science as a logical development of a single law of nature.

And in the 40 chapters following, he discusses the principles of economics, production, exchange and distribution: Labor stimulus, capital, universal patrimony, division of labor, value, money, government, credit, paper money, monopolies, free trade, wages, competition., land ownership, interest, rent, profit, population, peace, socialism, taxation, pauperism, wasteful spending and public liberality. It's well written and very detailed!

Condition of this great old book is less than ideal, but still readable after more than 130 years!

It is ex lib with the usual library markings. Pages show some yellowing and are quite brittle. The first few pages have broken loose from the binding, but the text is complete and readable. Covers show light edge/corner wear, but have been rebound professionally, so are generally quite good.

It's a difficult title to find these days - don't miss it!

Priorities for Human Survival
Can man survive the wonders of his own creation? Have all his mighty works been pointing to oblivion? This is being seriously argued by eminent and respected scholars.

The old fears that once preoccupied us -- of nuclear annihilation or massive unemployment -- have succumbed to a more insidious portent: We may be choking on our own concept of progress.

In PRIORITIES FOR SURVIVAL, experts from throughout the country discuss the major issues.

The 223-page hardbound book was edited by William P. Lineberry of the Council on Foreign Relations and published in 1973 by the H. W. Wilson Co., New York, as part of their Reference Shelf series.

Topics and contributors include:
I. CHALLENGE To MAN'S SURVIVAL Muddling Our Way to Extinction; S. R. Eyre. Man the Pest; Robert C. Cowen. Imperiled Africa
II. IN DEFENSE OF PROGRESS AND TECHNOLOGY Norman Podhoretz. The Prophets of Doom and Gloom; Philip Handler. Exaggeration: The Other Pollution Peril; A. L. Jones. Crying Wolf Solves Nothing; Ron S. Boster. Keeping the Movement in Perspective

III. THE DEBATE ON GROWTH The Limits to Growth; Wade Greene and Soma Golden. The Curse of the GNP; John Noble Wilford. The End of the Cowboy Economy?

IV. OF COSTS AND PRIORITIES Peter F. Drucker. Choosing the Lesser Evils; Gene Bylinsky. Some Cost Considerations; The Need for International Cooperation; Constance Holden. The Movement: Public Support Falters

V. THE WAY AHEAD: SOME PROFFERED SOLUTIONS George S. McGovern. Action Plan for the Federal Government; Russell E. Train. American World Policy; Peter C. Stuart. Hands Across the Cold War; Trends at the State and Local Level; Maurice F. Strong. New Journey of Hope

The book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There are some light scuffs on the front and minor corner/spine end wear to the covers. Inside pages are clean, crisp and show no apparent defects. (3426)

Stimulus in Economic Life Sir Josiah Stamp is the author of this 1927 Cambridge University Press publication, ON STIMULUS IN THE ECONOMIC LIFE, first presented in the Rede Lecture series.

In the 68-page original paperboard covered book, Stamp makes his case for the importance of incentive (stimulus) in growth of the economy and suggests forms of incentive that are most effective. One example he gives is of the runner who may be running "all out" for a $100 prize. In the last lap, if it were shouted to him through a megaphone that the prize was doubled, he probably would and could do no better. But a dash of cold water or a burst of cheering might stimulate him to even greater exertion.

The book is in Very Good condition – and also very difficult to find in this day and age. It is ex lib, with the usual library markings, and shows some bruised on cover edges/corners and spine ends. Inside pages have no apparent defects. The search we did turned up only four copies of this title available for sale – price tags ranged up to $60. Want a great one at a bargain price? Look here! Oil Prices & World Economy

Between 1973 and 1974, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), increased the average export price of oil from $2.75 a barrel to $10 a barrel. Where is it now, 27 years later?

As most of us remember, that transfer of income in the 1970s administered a series of depressing shocks to virtually every sector of the world economy. And those repercussions continue to be debated throughout the world, along with the adjustment policies they require -- both domestic and international.

HIGHER OIL PRICES AND WORLD ECONOMY is a book in which nine economists from the U.S., Western Europe and Japan examine the effect of those 1970s oil prices on the world economy, as well as weighing the merits of various monetary and fiscal policies that were adopted in response and exploring how the adjustment problem was likely to change in future years.

The hardbound book was edited by Edward R. Fried and Charles L. Schultze and published in this FIRST EDITION in 1975 by the Brookings Institution, Washington DC.

The book is in Very Good+ condition, although it is ex lib and has the usual library markings. The dust jacket is not present, however the jacket end flaps are glued inside the front cover.

If it weren't for the current situation, we could probably view this as history. As it is, this is a very relevant view of today's oil price problems and may provide answers for them! It's a fascinating book! (1340/rB)
