1958 Central College (IA) Yearbook
You might be amazed at the celebrities you find in old high school and college yearbooks … and this 1958 PELICAN, from Central College in Pella, Iowa, is no exception!
Two names we immediately recognized among the seniors graduating in 1958 were Pella native Steve Bell, who left Iowa for work as a public speaker; writer in special projects for television, radio, and multi-media; leader of seminars on ‘Politics and the Media’ and as a news correspondent for ABC News from 1967-1986. As a war correspondent in the early 1970s, he reported from Vietnam and Indo-China. In 1985 he filed the first live satellite report from Vietnam. He became the ABC Bureau Chief in Hong Kong in 1972, served as a White House correspondent and became familiar to millions of Americans as anchorman for ABC's ‘World News This Morning’ and news segments of ‘Good Morning America.’ He later became professor of Telecommunications at Ball State University
Another graduating senior was Paul Tambrino, a native of College Point, NY, who came to Central to study Business Administration. Following graduation he returned east and served in various education positions, including vice president of academic affairs at an institution in New Jersey. In 1991 he once again came to Iowa and served, until his 2002 retirement, as president and chief executive officer of Iowa Valley Community College District.
The 143-page hardbound book contains the usual yearbook content – photos and listings of administrators, students, faculty, organizations, student life activities and more. Plus, a large section of advertising (most from Pella businesses) completes the book.
It’s in Very Good condition, although a previous owner’s name is stamped on the front endpaper. There are a couple of scrapes on the front cover. Otherwise, it’s without apparent defects! (5175)
