Zubrick’s Rock: Intrigue and Lunacy
Need a great book for a summer afternoon escape? If you like intrigue – and some tongue-in-cheek humor, consider ZUBRICK’S ROCK, this outrageous and exciting first novel from Robert Eringer. It was published in this 1995 apparent first edition by National Press Books, Washington DC.

The story:
Multimillionaire recluse Barry Zubrick's tax exile in glamorous Monte Carlo is threatened when the police revoke his residency permit. So Zubrick, who has always wanted his own country, plots to overthrow the picturesque principality.

With the assistance of a former CIA official, Zubrick schemes to seize Monaco ‘legitimately’ by tracing a descendant of the Spinola family, which briefly ruled the principality over 700 years ago -- and installing him as the true prince.

Enter Gerry Spinola -- dentist, gambler and alcoholic from Hoboken, New Jersey -- and the only heir Zubrick can dig up on short notice. Zubrick cuts a deal with Spinola to become his puppet.

Stirring a retired general and a band of soldiers-of-fortune into his mix, Zubrick assembles the ingredients for a coup d'etat. Taking Monaco is easy, he reckons. The problem is, what to do about France, which is pledged to protect the principality's rule.

Brimming with comedy and suspense, Zubrick’s Rock is swiftly paced with outrageously off-beat and comic characters, starting with the paranoid Zubrick himself.

The 210-page hardbound book is in AS NEW condition, with no apparent defects on either the book or dustjacket. It’s a good one! (5956)

The story begins in 1906 in the luxurious Fifth Avenue mansion of New York debutante Mallory Bookever and her widowed aunt who are entertaining an unexpected caller. He has brought personal letters for them from Malloy’s fiancé, who has had an accident that prevents him from crossing the continent for their wedding. Consequently, he has sent his best friend to escort her to California, where the ceremony will be performed.

As they travel west in a splendidly furnished private railway car, Mallory is almost killed when an unknown assailant tries to drag her from the train’s observation platform. Then a bottle of lethal sleeping medicine disappears from her aunt’s stateroom. The mystery has begun …

Mortal Fear - Robin Cook HB Thriller

Robin Cook -- the man who invented medical techno-horror -- takes you on a startling and chilling odyssey into the origins of life and death in this hardcover copy of Mortal Fear. Published in this 1988 edition by Putnam's Sons, New York, the book details the fearful potential of DNA research mistakes, accidents and successes.

When an eminent biochemical geneticist dies violently before his eyes, a doctor must use more than his medical knowledge to explain what he comes to believe is murder - and to stop a scientific breakthrough from becoming a curse instead of a miracle. It's splendidly researched and intricately plotted -- a story to keep you on the edge of your chair.

Condition of the 360+ page book is Very Good, although this copy is ex lib and shows the usual library markings. It has a protective Mylar cover over the dust jacket, shows a few minor rubs on the cover edges and has a slight twist to the spine. Overall, though, it's clean, readable and ready to intrigue you!

Ciphered, 1st Ed., Keech First Mystery The young and dedicated chief inspector of police in the university town definitely has his work cut out for him when he finds himself in the middle of a murder case in which four of the five victims were German refugees - and one of them was engaged in secret biological research. To make matters worse, ciphered messages suggesting spy activities are found near the scene of the crime. This is CIPHERED, the first mystery novel from the pen of Scott Keech. The 253-page hardbound book was published in this stated FIRST EDITION in 1980 by Harper & Row, New York. It's in Near New condition, with residue from a price tag on the front endpaper. The Cat's Meow, J. Flannery Mystery

Truth be told, the Irish of Chicago are fleeing to the suburbs and the political machine, so well-greased under Mayor Daley; is creaking a bit with rust. So no one blinks when the graveyard at old St. Pat's Church is sold and slated to become a gas station. That's part of what gets Democratic Precinct Captain Jimmy Flannery up off his duff in the 27th Ward and over to St. Pat's in the 14th. The other part is the body of a dead cat.

Ignatius, Father Mulrooney's cat, has been found dead in the church and buried by the aging priest in the graveyard. Dead cats tell no tales, but the howls of Ignatius -- according to the good father -- startle him from a deep sleep the next night and send him into the church to investigate. On the sanctuary floor is a pentagon painted in blood and signs of a Black Mass. But all traces of the Satan worship vanish by the time he brings his housekeeper; Mrs. Thimble, to witness the sacrilege. Can't Jimmy; with his growing reputation for investigation, take a look-see?

From Edgar Award winning author Robert Campbell, this is THE CAT'S MEOW. The 183-page hardbound book was copyrighted in 1988 and published in this book club edition by New American Library, NY.

Condition is AS NEW with no apparent defects on book or dust jacket. (r13rev)

Summer of Red Wolf - Love, Rivalry, Violence

Summer of the Red Wolf is a novel with all the magic, the mystery, the primitive force of its island setting. It is the story of two men and two women in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, the far islands where the land falls into the sea and there is nothing between the last crags and the coast of America. At first glance it is a very simple story - of love, rivalry, brotherhood and epic violence. At second glance it is something else - an evocation in the form of a novel of the flight of modern man from a civilization which has grown too complex for his frail spirit.

The book was written by Morris L. West, published in this hardbound edition in 1971 by William Morrow & Co., New York. This is a book club edition. It is in VERY GOOD/EXCELLENT condition with no defects at all that we find on the book. The dust jacket is present and in Very Good condition, too, with only very slight edge creasing.

An interesting book - at a very enjoyable price!

The Detective, HB, Thorp Mystery

According to the publisher, not since Raymond Chandler has a writer: so brilliantly taken possession of the American detective novel. In its characterization of men and women caught in relationships they are struggling to understand, in its profound suspense, and in its attention to language this book constitutes the first serious claim in twenty years for the private detective story as literature.

Roderick Thorp's THE DETECTIVE was copyrighted by the author in 1966 and published by The Dial Press, NY. This book club edition hardbound book has 598 pages.

It's in Very Good condition with no defects apparent on the book itself. The dust jacket is present, but has edge/corner wear, as well as some edge tears. (9r13rev)

American Gold Rush - BLOODSONG On a hot, Manhattan summer morning, former Navy flying Ace Admiral "Stretch" Washburn picks up his granddaughter for a cross-country trip in a luxury motor home. What begins as a simple search for their family's history turns into a terror-filled nightmare.

This is BLOOD SONG, a world where family ties are stronger than the boundaries of time, and where the lives of two people become dependent on the journals their ancestor left behind generations before.

The hardbound book was written by Hank Searls and published in this stated First Edition in 1984 by the Villard Books, New York. It features memorable characters -- past and present -- threaded into many layers of richly textured fabric of romance, excitement, and mysterious connections across time.

The book's endpapers are decorated with maps of the routes followed by both Admiral Washburn and by his ancestor Michael Washburn in 1849.

It's in Very Good condition with no defects we see on the book beyond a small number handwritten at top of the front endpaper. The dust jacket is present and shows some edge wear. (t2190)
