Gangs and Their Culture, 1950s
The $1,500 award-winning LEADERSHIP BOOK in a 1950s Association Press contest., John K. Donohue’s BAFFLING EYES OF YOUTH is an enthralling first-of-its-kind life story of a gang of delinquent boys who lived in one of our typical big cities (St. Paul, Minnesota), how a probation officer working with them saw their promise and found ways to win their confidence and help many grow to social maturity -- using many resources of his community.

The sociological study is a documentary, case-history account of delinquent gang formation and treatment, and of the social influences on individual and group personalities. It’s also a guide for the professional and volunteer youth worker who will find here a full 25-year study of a delinquent gang (the Ramsey Midgets) -- introduction to the gang, patterns of work with the gang, and appraisal of this work as gang members reached adulthood.

Much has been written concerning the culture of such gangs, their mores, colorful language, and special sets of values. But this book delves far more deeply to the core of delinquency -- reflecting the constant interaction between individuals and their groups, and the limits to which gangs can be directed in opposition to the standards of their peers outside the gang.

The 251-page hardbound book was published in 1957 by the Association Press, New York. It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some tape residue on the endpapers from the dust jacket’s protective cover. The dust jacket has some minor edge/corner wear. No other defects are apparent. (5889/r22)

British Penal System, Cure for Crime

A CURE FOR CRIME, THE CASE FOR THE SELF-DETERMINATE PRISON SENTENCE was written by Kathleen J. Smith, a former assistant governor of Britain’s Holloway Prison. The 112-page hardbound book was published in 1965 (in this apparent FIRST EDITION) by Gerald Duckworth & Co., London.

The author attacks the out-of-date treatment of criminals and introduces her idea that prisoners should pay for their crimes with their labor on a strict financial basis, compensating victims on a similar basis. She studies the effects of her proposals on offenders and their victims, on the police and the courts, and on society as a whole, then answers possible objections. It’s a well thought-out theory!

Condition of the book is Good+, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There are some stains on front and back covers. Inside pages, however, show no apparent defects. The pages are clean, crisp, tightly bound and easily read! A great addition to your criminology, prison or justice collection.

Prison Profiles – Correctional Treatment

During my twenty-five years in correctional work, it has become increasingly clear that the possibilities of successfully controlling crime and delinquency are severely limited by widespread public ignorance concerning its nature and treatment. The task of rehabilitation is only partly achieved when an offender begins to realize why he got into trouble, in the first place, and really wants to do something about it. He has also to make a reasonable adjustment to the social environment in which he is to work and live. How can he hope to do this in the face of continuing public ignorance of the more elementary facts about criminal and delinquent behavior, their causes, and the possibilities -- as well as the limitations -- of treatment? One purpose of this book is to make knowledge of correctional treatment, as it is practiced in a prison setting, accessible to those whose work brings them in contact with adult offenders.

So begins Mark S. Richmond’s PRISON PROFILES, a 203-page hardbound book published in 1965 by Oceana Publications, Dobbs Ferry NY. As he attempts to educate the public about modern prisons and correctional treatment methods, Richmond offers information about:

THE PURPOSE OF A PRISON: Definition; Historical perspectives, Quacker reform, the Auburn system, the reformatory idea, contributions of this century; the emergence of new philosophies -- the struggle with traditions, fears and prejudices.
CLASSIFICATION: Definition; a working hypothesis; classification in theory and practice; ancillary programs and services; basic principles and their implications; future applications.
EDUCATION: Purposes; kinds of programs, recent trends; short-comings and fallacies.
WORK: Common beliefs about prison labor; types of employment; maintenance work; an incentive proposal; industrial activities; principles.
MEDICAL SERVICES: Recommended standards; a case example; special problems of correctional medicine; medical research in prisons; the future of correctional medicine.
RELIGIOUS SERVICES: Program elements; special problem areas; current trends.
RECREATION: Purposes and principles; problems and needs.
DISCIPLINE: Disciplinary practices; basic principles; factors in the maladjustment of prisoners; the significance of prisoner misconduct; the positive approach to discipline.
CONTACTS WITH THE "OUTSIDE": Visits, social and "business"; furloughs and special leave; correspondence, social, "business", privileged mail; other contacts.
PRISON MANAGEMENT: Central administration; administrative organization of a prison; basic management problems.
CORRECTIONAL RESOURCES IN THE COMMUNITY: Probation; parole; effects of other community resources; citizen participation
OTHER CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS: Jails; camps; half-way houses.
THE LAW: Correctional issues in the law
THE COURTS: Correctional problems related to sentencing
STATISTICS AND RESEARCH: The need to know.
ASSESSMENT: Basic concepts and trends; problems and needs.

The book is well-written and easily understood, offering a wealth of valuable information! Its condition is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is very minor edge/corner/spine end wear on the covers, with minor scuffing on the back. The inside pages, however, are without apparent defects. (3381)
