Reducing Auto Accidents, 1965
Written by T. S. Skillman and published in this 1966 First American Edition by David McKay & Co., New York, ROAD SAFETY: HOW TO REDUCE ROAD ACCIDENTS provides an answer to one of society’s most serious problems of the time.

The distinguished international engineer with his own technical research staff and in consultation with many of the most prominent experts in the field, suggests new concepts that he felt should save thousands of lives and dollars.

While Ralph Nader's famous book, ‘UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED’ claimed the automobile industry had little concern for the safety of its customers, this book places a large share of the responsibility on the ordinary, well-intentioned, law-abiding citizens with average driving skills who are responsible for most of America's traffic accidents.

The solution to the problem is not obvious or easy, but in this perceptive 240-page hardbound book, the author has advanced a system that can be used by the ordinary driver and his family to improve substantially chances of survival and affect appreciably the lives of thousands of other motorists as well.

The book is a practical, easy-to-follow guide for the average, intelligent motorist. It presents persuasive ideas on driver psychology that may well be the only realistic kind of improvement we can hope to make.

Condition is Very Good, although the book is ex lib with the usual library markings. The dust jacket is present – and protected with a mylar covering. Both the covers and inside pages are without apparent defects. (5955)

Federal Highways: Road to Ruin
‘A critical view of the federal highway program,’ ROAD TO RUIN is a hard-hitting book by A. Q. Mowbray that discloses many frightening facts about our obsessive road building and its causes.

One such cause, he states flatly, is money -- money for road builders, for the automotive and petroleum industries, for the land developers. ‘There is more money in harvesting winter season vacationists in the luxurious desert center that sprawls from Palm Springs thirty miles south to Indio than there is in raising dates.’

In a chapter titled ‘Magical Highway Trust Fund,’ the author reveals the sacrosanct nature of the Fund, which is superimposed on the regular federally aided highway programs. This provides that 90 per cent of the cost of a projected 41,000-mile road system be paid for with federal funds -- funds which from 1956 to 1968 raised the federal tax on gasoline from one cent a gallon to four cents, in addition to raising taxes on spare parts, tires, and other automotive necessities. (And how high is that tax now?)

Mowbray unshrouds the inequities that permit both public and private lands to be seized for highways under the ‘power of eminent domain’ -- revealing that the anti-freeway forces usually include only people with little or no political influence -- unorganized individuals who will be displaced from homes and businesses, conservationists, civil rights groups. While the decisions to build federally financed highways are made in Congress, the pressure is exerted by political expediency and the well-financed highway-automobile lobby.

Particularly interesting is a section in which the author provides an enlightening look at what may be an underlying cause of racial unrest in our cities. Because land is usually cheapest in the slum districts, most highways are bulldozed through ghetto areas. Payment for condemned property means nothing to the slum dwellers for they are usually renters and are left with no choice but to be shunted from one slum to another, with every move meaning worse conditions at higher rates because low-income housing becomes scarcer with every highway.

Mowbray is vigorous in expressing his opinion of the highway-tire-automobile complex responsible for the callous, systematic devastation of our country's once-magnificent open spaces. He offers many examples of such destruction, including the grandeur-to-squalor story of the Fishing Bridge area in Yosemite National Park. He also cites plans for future onslaughts, such as the projected construction of gasoline stations and restaurants in Yellowstone, and the proposed leveling of a large part of Sequoia National Park.

The author studied and researched his subject thoroughly and backs up his statements with ample proof -- including information from congressmen and senators, governors and cabinet members, land-use and transportation experts, city planners, travel writers, road-building and rubber-company executives, conservationists, and a host of private citizens.

There can be no doubt the author threw open a closet full of skeletons and that any discussion of this book is bound to be controversial -- if not downright argumentative. But one thing is certain: whether you oppose or share the author's views, this will capture and hold your attention all the way through.

The 240-page hardbound book was published in this 1968 stated first edition by Lippincott Co., Philadelphia. Condition is Very Good, although the book is ex lib with the usual library markings. The dust jacket is present – and protected with a mylar covering. Both the covers and inside pages are without apparent defects, but there is some tape residue on endpapers. (5953/r18)

American Automobiles, History, Photos
ART OF THE AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE – A CENTENARY was written by Nick Georgano and published in this 1996 Third Printing by Smithmark Publishers, New York. If you appreciate cars, you’ll love this book!

This is the story of how the great cars, such as Hudson, Packard, Duesenberg, Cord, Pontiac, Lincoln, Ford and Chrysler were created, and the men whose artistry shaped them. The author traces the history of the great designers, including Harley Earl, Bill Mitchell, John Tjaarda, Raymond Loewy, Gordon Buehrig, and Bob Gregorie, and their automobiles from the beginning of the 20th century to the end.

The 268-page hardbound book includes interviews with major figures and behind-the-scenes stories from their studios. It is illustrated with more than 250 spectacular color photographs by Nicky Wright, as well as many original designs and drawings

The American automobile has always been more than a means of transportation. The inspired fusion of form and function has meant that for more than a century men and women have been driving about their daily business in machines which can only be described as works of art. You’ll see them in this gallery! This is a heavy book on glossy paper and measures about 11.5 by 11 inches, making many of the color photos great for framing!

This copy is in Very Good condition with some minor edge/corner wear to the dust jacket. Some inside pages show a slight creasing on lower right corners, but this doesn’t interfere with the illustrations or text. Covers show no apparent defects. (5307)
