Rebellious Youth in Affluent Society
In recent years the American public has grown accustomed to daily reports of juvenile crime, gang warfare and general troublemaking. But the problem of today's rebellious youth is not confined to America.
Evidence of mounting youthful lawlessness comes from countries as diverse as England, Sweden, Germany, Japan, and even the Soviet Union which has been beset by several outbreaks of mass hooliganism.
The old explanation -- that poverty causes these young people to protest their misery -- no longer explains. In THE TROUBLEMAKERS: REBELLIOUS YOUTH IN AN AFFLUENT SOCIETY, T. R. Fyvel seeks new and more adequate understanding of the surprising violence of youth in increasingly affluent societies.
A British social and political analyst with a sympathetic ability to penetrate the mind of the restless teenager estranged from the world of his elders, Fyvel devotes much space to a discussion of the British delinquent. Still, it is his purpose to locate the common denominator in juvenile delinquency all over the world.
Who are these ‘troublemakers’ and what motivates them to act as they do? Is there some element, some moral deficiency deep in our whole way of modern life which transcends differences between Europe and America, capitalism and communism, and sends a minority of our youth into defiant rebellion?
It is the author’s thesis that this disquieting phenomenon must be viewed in the context of the sweeping transformations which are convulsing our society. This is a truly important book, probing the moral poverty which the older generation has handed down, along with material to comfort the younger.
The 347-page hardbound book was published in 1962 by Schocken Books, New York. It is in Good+ condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Both hinges are broken, yet the pages remain tightly bound. Covers are without any apparent defects, as is the dust jacket, which is protected with a mylar cover. (5998/r18)

1960s High School Underground Notes
In the introduction to OUR TIME IS NOW. NOTES FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL UNDERGROUND, author Kurt Vonnegut Jr. wrote: ‘High school is closer to the American experience than anything else I can think of, which is why this book is so full of shocks of recognition for Americans in almost any walk of life. We have all been there. While there, we saw nearly every form of justice and injustice, kindness and meanness, intelligence and stupidity which we were likely to encounter in later life.
‘Consequently, the mere striplings who have contributed to this book are dealing with issues to which few Americans can remain indifferent, since they are the main issues of life itself. And I am bound to say that the striplings discuss life as it is and as it should be as intelligently as did the authors of the Federalist Papers. They tell us not only what seems wrong to them, but what can be done to make things better. What could be more decent and hopeful than that?
‘The words in this book do not come from the mouths of babes. They come from the mouths of adults in high school. As to the people who tell these young adults that they must not speak s frankly as they do, because the officially adult community will be outraged: They are right in a way, but that way is cowardly.
‘This is the home of the brave. Remember?’
The 262-page hardbound book goes on from there to cover discussions by high school students of the late 1960s on topics as diverse as discovering the underground; mobilization of students; student power; Black power for Black students; educational reform; and youth culture: the rock revolution. The book was published in 1970 by Praeger Publishers, New York.
It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. The dust jacket is present and protected with a mylar cover. We see no apparent defects on the dust jacket or the covers. It’s a good one! (5876/rI)

Guide to Starting a Day Care Center
Day care for children between the ages of three and five is now an accepted fact. Day care for infants and toddlers under age three, however, is still controversial, although several European countries have had success with infant day care for decades.
E. Belle Evans, one of the authors of the well-known guide ‘Day Care’ (for three-to-five-year-olds), teamed with her husband, George E. Saia, to make a solid case for infant day care, and to provide a comprehensive, practical guide to starting and operating an infant center. Ms. Evans writes from experience both as director of a large day-care center with infant classrooms and as the mother of an infant son in day care.
The authors contend that recent studies and the European experience show ‘no significant developmental differences between infants in day care and those reared exclusively in the home.’ In fact, infants in a quality day-care program have several advantages: they are challenged intellectually by stimulating games, stories, and language opportunities; they learn to socialize with many adults and their own peers; and they may very well benefit from not having such an intense one-to-one child-mother relationship.
The bulk of the book is an informative, detailed guide to starting and operating a quality infant day-care center. The authors cover every aspect, including a summary of the rules and regulations for licensing infant centers; suggestions on writing funding proposals and making budgets, selecting and developing a site, and designing a curriculum for a program that encourages optimal physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development in young children.
Published in 1972 by the Beacon Press, Boston, DAYCARE FOR INFANTS, The Case for Infant Day Care and a Practical Guide is a 216-page hardbound book. It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. There are no apparent defects on the book or on the mylar-covered dust jacket. (6003)

Homeless Families in America
Having a home is assumed to be an essential for any human being. However, there are now more than 2 million homeless people in this country. A few days before Christmas, 1985, Jonathan Kozol embarked on a journey that would take him into the lives of homeless families across America. RACHEL AND HER CHILDREN: HOMELESS FAMILIES IN AMERICA focuses on the mothers and children he found in the ‘temporary’ shelters of New York City’s welfare hotels, buildings full of shattered dreams, wounded families, and children with no future.
The 261-page hardbound book was published in 1988 by Crown Publishers, New York. It reveals what it means to be homeless and tells us how so many people reach this impasse in their lives. It also suggests what can be done to alleviate this national shame.
The book is in AS NEW condition with no apparent defects on either the covers or inside pages! (5642/r34)

Problems with Psychiatric Treatment for Teens
‘When adolescents are disturbed or disturbing,’ writes Dr. William M. Easson in his preface to THE SEVERELY DISTURBED ADOLESCENT: Inpatient, Residential, and Hospital Treatment, ‘the typical reaction is to treat and. . . in recent years, many treatment centers have been developed to provide some form of treatment for. these troubled adolescents.
‘To a casual observer, such therapeutically directed investment would seem to guarantee benefit to the young people in these treatment units,’ Yet, as Dr. Easson points out, ‘this expectation has not been fulfilled: for many disturbed adolescents an inpatient placement brings not the anticipated emotional growth and personality integration but rather behavioral regression and disruption.’
Drawing heavily on his first-hand diagnostic and treatment experiences at the Mayo Clinic, the University of Saskatchewan, and the Children's Hospital of The Menninger Foundation, Dr. Easson attempts to shed helpful new light on some of the fundamental problem areas relating to the institutional treatment of adolescent personality disturbances.
His primary aim is to help stimulate and advance the thinking of professional people concerned mainly with the shaping and administration of residential unit programs ‘geared to encourage the adolescent's move into society at as high a level of social competence as he is capable.’
The 249-page hardbound book has much to say to those working in adjacent areas. As the author himself observes, ‘a deeper understanding of these severely disturbed young men ( and women) can give us a wider appreciation of the etiological, diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic problems raised with all adolescents.’ It was published in 1969 by International Universities Press, New York. The book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There are no apparent defects on the mylar-covered dust jacket, and the cover edges show only slight shelf wear. (5996/r18)
