BUNTS – More Reflections on Baseball From George Will, known for his Pulitzer Prize winning political commentary, BUNTS is a comprehensive volume of eloquent reflections on the national pastime. This book contains more than 70 finely honed pieces about some of the giants of baseball – Curt Flood, Ted Williams, Pete Rose, Bart Giamatti and Will’s own short-lived baseball career as a ‘very late draft choice of the Mittendorf Funeral Home Panthers.’

The 349-page hardbound book discusses the building of Camden Yards in Baltimore and the dismantling of the 1997 World Series Champion Florida Marlins. An essay on the art of baseball broadcasting features ESPN play-by-play man Jon Miller. It’s a great view of the game, with more than 70 photos and was published in this 1998 apparent first edition by Scribner, New York!

The book is in Very Good condition, with no apparent defects inside or out. The dust jacket is present with no apparent defects. A nice gift for the baseball fan in your life! (6067)

Wooden Puzzles, Toys Patterns
Old-fashioned toys of all types have had perennial appeal to young and old alike, but the simple wooden puzzle toy has always been a special timeless favorite. Long after the racing cars, plastic boats and metal robots have lost their charm, a wooden puzzle toy will still be enjoyed. In WOODEN PUZZLE TOYS by Ed Sibbett Jr., you’ll find patterns and instructions for 24 easy-to-do projects.

Designed for both beginning and advanced craftsmen/women, patterns here are printed with transfer ink on special paper, ready to be transferred directly onto wood with a home iron. Each can be used several times. Once these are transferred and cut out, all that’s needed is sanding and painting.

Among the designs included are puzzles that hang, puzzles that fit on a dowel and others that stand on a wooden base. Featured (and shown in color photos) are Mouse on the Moon, Smiling Cat, Girl on a Rocking Horse, Fish in a Bowl, Humpty Dumpty on His Wall, Clown Acrobat, Dragon an a Lady, Christmas Tree with Stars, Mermaid, Carousel Horse, Rainbow and Butterfly.

The softcover book was published in 1978 by Dover Publications, New York. It is in Very Good condition with some minor creases and wear on edges/corners and spine. Inside pages have no apparent defects. If you want some new ideas for making wooden puzzles, they’re probably here! (4821)

Koller’s New Book of Guns
Introduced by its editors as the most complete book of its kind, Larry Koller’s New Book of Guns is a 128-page glossy trade paperback. Edited by Don Myrus, it was published in 1959 by Maco magazine Corp., New York and measures about 6.5 inches by 9.5 inches.

With page after page of great photos and drawings, the book covers both new guns and standard models, bullets and cartridges, and provides a complete breakdown on shotguns, rifles and handguns. It also introduces the reader to the fine art of antique gun collecting.

There is a comprehensive chart of every kind, make and model of gun for hunting or target shooting, together with the price of each. Easy to follow instructions tell you how to mount a scope, make gun cabinets and racks, and fit a gun stock. It's a book for the novice, the expert and the in-between shooter. In short, it's a book for all who are interested in guns -- written by men who know guns, game and the needs of the hunter.

Condition of this neat collectible is very good, with a few minor corner creases and some edge wear on the covers. A previous owner's name is written at the top of the front cover. Inside pages show some yellowing from age, but are clean, crisp and easily read. It's a winner! (3975)

Gadgets & Wrinkles, Ingenuity at Sea

The complicated business of sailing a boat efficiently and the equally complicated business of living aboard her comfortably have called forth man's ingenuity and inventiveness.

Any mechanical device to which that inventiveness gives rise is called, in the sailor's argot, a GADGET.

On the other hand, any method of procedure which it develops is known as a WRINKLE.

GADGETS AND WRINKLES, A COMPENDIUM OF MAN’S INGENUITY AT SEA is a description of the ingenuity and inventiveness of the sailors of all nations and all ages. But the book is devoted mainly to gadgets and wrinkles used by modern yachtsmen on modern yachts.

The Marconi rig, the penchant for ocean racing, the increased use of wire and winches, the invasion of new materials, the discoveries in aerodynamics, the borrowings from the motor car and the airplane, the employment of power and electricity, and the fad for racing dinghies have brought about a veritable tidal wave of yacht invention. This book lists and explains more than five hundred gadgets and wrinkles that have proved useful in the handling of a yacht.

Written by H. A. Calahan and published in this 1938 FIRST PRINTING by the Macmillan Co., New York, this 311 page hardbound book is illustrated with numerous black/white photos and drawings.

It’s in Very Good condition, with only light edge/corner wear to the covers. Inside pages are clean, complete and very readable. The endpapers show slight foxing and a previous owner’s name is handwritten on front endpaper. The dustjacket is present, but has some edge/corner wear.

It is a book to make poor sailors into good sailors; to make any sailor a better sailor! (3485)
