Cal Farley Boys’ Ranch Tribute
With a presentation card laid in the front, this is the 1971 hard bound First Edition of NO RULES OR GUIDELINES, the story of Cal Farley’s Boys’ Ranch, written by Louis Hendricks. It is based on a collection of 31 articles about the famed youth institution and was published following the founder’s unexpected death in 1967.

In the tribute, the author notes that ‘in the starting and operation of his Ranch, Cal
Farley had no books to read, no blueprint to follow. He had to draw upon his past experiences, the boys he befriended, and his own God-given talents. The growth of the Ranch was, for him, a period of learning, and for much of what he learned, he gave credit to his boys. Perhaps, in this book, a boy can find in the life of Cal Farley a pattern for his own existence; that in the life of the Boys Ranch founder, he can find his own rules and guidelines.’

The 147-page book includes endpaper aerial views of the ranch, as well as a number of black/white photos of the resident youngsters, Farley and famous persons who supported the cause.

It is in Very Good condition, with no apparent defects inside or out. A nice reminder of a renowned institution. (6095/J)

Enjoying Words … Has Everything Been Said?
Sometimes it seems almost futile to try to write anything new because it has all been said before -- and so well said. Of course, any such defeatism must lead to a dead end of accomplishment in terms of literary effort.

Fortunately for the living and those to come, there are many bright new stars on the panel of contemporary writers. They are skillfully telling the story of these eventful days and their words will be read with relish by future generations. In fact, the printed word today is so prolific, and the competition with the book, the magazine and the newspaper is so great, future generations will require anthologies in great number to know what our bright literary stars have said.

In THE JOY OF WORDS, there has been no effort to be erudite, consistent, unusual or educational. The prime purpose is to amuse by exposing the reader to many things he has read before and may wish to read again. Perhaps that poem he had to learn to pass freshman English, is here. He may even enjoy rereading it under different auspices.

It is not possible to include only those things that appeal to him. If he dislikes poetry in any form, we hope he will please forgive us. Some of us like the ‘well-turned couplet.’

On the other hand, there are those who love Shakespeare, but just cannot understand how his hallowed words should appear with some of the more commonplace choices that have arrived in this selection. It takes all kinds you know -- and we have tried to select all kinds of literature.

Many interesting quotes from writers like Ben Franklin, Ruskin, Whitman, Holmes, Confucius, Jefferson, and others are among the selections of literature expressing beauty, humor, history, wisdom or inspiration that are a joy to read and read again. Every one of the 224 pages is decorated with red text drawings, type boxes or other accents, and all page edges are spattered with red. Even the hardbound covers contribute to the pretty book, in red with gold stamping.

The book was published in 1960 by J. G. Ferguson Publishing, Chicago and is in Very Good condition, with no apparent defects inside or out. It’s a beauty – and a great gift for someone who loves words – and ideas! (6061/RAA)

MORE Random Acts of Kindness

MORE RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS, a sequel to the 1993 best-seller, was compiled by the editors of Conari Press, Berkeley CA, and published by them in 1994.

According to the publisher, the whole movement started in a Sausalito, California, restaurant in 1982 when Anne Herbert scrawled the words practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty on a place mat. From there it spread to bumper stickers, quietly at first, but with the powerful momentum of something important -- calling us to lives of caring and compassion.

Random Acts of Kindness, true stories of acts of kindness, was published in February 1993 and set off a chain reaction. Articles appeared in nearly every newspaper in the U.S., and hundreds of radio stations devoted airtime to the cause. Toward the end of 1993, a Bakersfield, California, professor gave a class assignment to do a random act of kindness -- unleashing yet another flood of stories. The concept continues to spread, and we hope it will carry on until the beauty of simple kindness touches -- and changes -- us all.

This 179-page softcover book is filled with inspiration for those wanting to continue the process. It’s in AS NEW condition, with no apparent defects, inside or out. A great one to read when you’re down … or a tremendous gift for a friend! (3056)

Spirituality, Soul Gardening, Good Life

Soul Gardening: Cultivating the Good Life was written by Terry Hershey and published in this 160-page softcover edition in 2000 by Augsburg Fortress Publishers.

This book is about what it means to be a soul gardener. Reading it is somewhat like walking in a garden-where it feels good to be alive, where we may sit for a while and talk about what we’ve learned, and which allows us to be more fully human.

Soul Gardening will not make you a gardener. But it will nurture your soul, teach you how to live, and renew your sense of what it means to live the good life. It is about appreciating the ordinary gifts of grace, the value of solitude, the art of listening, the healing power of nature, finding the balance between loving and losing, creating a sane lifestyle, being fully awake and alive, and the value of slowing down the gift of seeing God's world with new eyes.

The author, a former protestant minister, recounts experiences from his own life, using the metaphor of gardening to speak to our longing for spiritual growth, a healthy lifestyle, and a more centered life. He includes exercises to lead you to your own experiences of the wonder and beauty of daily life.

The book is in Very Good condition, nearly new, and has no apparent defects beyond a small area of label residue on the bottom front cover. (5620/r35)
