1906 Face, Hair, Scalp & Massage
Written by Carl Rosen, THE FACE, HAIR AND SCALP, Their Care and Treatment, and FACE AND SCALP MASSAGE is an unusual hardbound book, published in 1906 by Monarch Book Co., Chicago. The book, says the author, teaches principles and methods which are of prime importance, not only in preserving the hair and complexion, but also in treating the milder forms of skin and scalp diseases.

Contents include Part One: the human body, the skin and its functions, food in relation to health, digestion and nutrition, circulation, necessity for exercise, bathing;

Part Two: the sources of true beauty, a wholesome complexion, cleansing the face, are face powders injurious? skin foods, Dr. Blank’s ‘infallible beautifiers,’ wrinkles, paraffin injections, blackheads, milium or whiteheads, acne or pimples, dry skin, oily skin, chloasma or liver spots, freckles, steaming and bleaching the face, moles and warts, scars and smallpox pittings;

Part Three: structure and functions of the hair, length and thickness of hair, shedding of the hair, value of fine hair, shampooing the hair, brushes and brushing, combs and combing, hair dressing, superfluous hair, hair cutting, care of children’s hair, care of girls’ hair, falling hair and dandruff, splitting of hair, bald spots of the head, premature baldness, baldness in old age, wigs and false hair, hair tonics, canities or gray hair, coloring the hair; and

Part Four:the art of massage, beneficial effects of massage, facial massage, massage, self-massage, scalp massage, and some ‘don’ts.’

Twenty-three black/white photos illustrate the 158 pages, which is a fascinating look at how the layperson could care for personal hygiene of skin and hair. No recipes for cosmetics, lotions or hair tonics are included because, says the author, most are injurious or misleading. Nature has her own way of beautifying and she cannot be deceived by short cuts and patented methods.

The book is in Very Good condition, with only some very minor scuffs on back cover and light scratches on the front cover’s paste-down photo. A previous owner’s stamped bookplate is on inside front cover. Inside pages have no apparent defects. (4790/r12)

How to Brew Better Beer
Think of it – beer for 12 to 20 cents a bottle – and the best beer you’ve ever tasted, tailed to the exact quirk of your tongue. This is the promise of author M. R. Reese – and his directions deliver on that promise. When you flip the cap off a bottle of your own brewing and taste, you’ll never want to go back to those store-bought varieties.

It’s easy, too, says the author, taking three hours at the most for five gallons of beer! The hardest part, he notes, is waiting for 4 to 6 weeks for the beer to reach perfection! You only need a few items of equipment – many of which are already in your kitchen.

With the 19 recipes here, you can brew top-grade beer and ale – American, Canadian or European style, from light beers to the heavier Irish stout – and learn to vary recipes to get exactly the pleasant taste you want.

The 122-page softcover book was published by Garden Way Publishers, Pownal VT. It includes an index and is illustrated with many black/white photos. Condition is Very Good with only very slight edge wear to the covers. There are no apparent defects inside. (6635)

From Dale Carnegie, whose landmark ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ sold more than 8.5 million copies and influenced the thinking of the entire nation, HOW TO STOP WORRYING AND START LIVING was designed to deal with what was considered the greatest person problem in the world – worry.

The 306-page hardbound book was published in this 1975 63rd printing by Simon & Schuster, New York. This is a practical, concrete, easy-to-read and inspiring handbook on conquering worry. People know that is is dangerous to worry, that worry saps one’s energy, warps thinking and kills ambition. But the basic question is: Can anything be done to stop worrying? Carnegie’s tested techniques have worked for thousands of men and women in all walks of life and can last a lifetime. This book, says the publisher, can change the whole course of your life!

Condition of the book is Good+. The dust jacket is present, but has some edge/corner wear and creasing. Someone has noted a page number on front of dust jacket. Covers show no apparent defects. Lovingkindness: Buddhism, Happiness

LOVINGKINDNESS: THE REVOLUTIONARY ART OF HAPPINESS was written by Sharon Salzberg, a meditation teacher and founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, and published in 1995 by Shambhala Press, Boston.

The 193-page softcover book explains how the Buddhist path can help individuals discover their inner joy and discusses simple Buddhist teachings and suggestions for meditation.

‘Lovingkindness’ meditation focuses on a Buddhist practice that emphasizes feelings of love, happiness, and compassion and involves four phrases: ‘May I be free from danger’; ‘May I have mental happiness’; "May I have physical happiness’; ‘May I have ease of well-being.’

Other exercises in this book are intended to increase your connection to and intimacy with others, by directing these positive sentiments outward toward specific people or the world in general.

This book will probably be best appreciated by those who have some experience with meditation already, but anyone can appreciate the way it takes a practice often considered mystical and turns it into a means of creating joy. (5633/r35)

Run an Effective Business Meeting

One of the most serious problems facing American business management today is its failure to plan and execute efficient, productive business meetings. Managers who are capable in every other function are all too often untrained in this aspect of their jobs, and the result is measured in millions of dollars of unnecessary costs, countless wasted man-hours and frustrating delays in vital decision-making.

HOW TO RUN MORE EFFECTIVE BUSINESS MEETINGS
is filled with practical advice for anyone who must run or participate in meetings. Organized as a step-by-step guide, it covers a wide range of meetings, from informal departmental sessions to conferences at the director's table. It covers such specialized meetings as financial presentations, technical reports and sales meetings.

A meeting is classified by its objectives. Some meetings are information-giving, some are fact-finding, others are decision-making meetings. In this 157-page hardbound book, techniques are clearly described for planning and executing each type of meeting, from preparation of the agenda ‘through the summary of objectives and accomplishments. Various types of visual aids are described, some of them brand new, that extend the communicating abilities of the meeting leader and the comprehension of his audience.’

The author believes that meetings provide a training ground for future managers and that employees are often measured for advancement by the way they perform in meetings. The book demonstrates that a solid improvement in company communication practices can bring management a better return on its investment in staff. Here is a book that will help both meeting leaders and those called upon to contribute to the success of meetings. The business meeting is here to stay. This book tells how to make it pay off as an effective management tool.

It was written by B. Y Auger and published in 1964 by Grosset & Dunlap, New York. The Introduction is by Bert S. Cross, president of the 3M Company. The book is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. There are no apparent defects on the book or on the mylar-covered dust jacket. (6001/r18)

Improving Business Effectiveness: Harvard

The third in a series of related studies which have been proceeding under the direction of Harvard Professor Abraham Zaleznik, THE DISTRIBUTION OF AUTHORITY IN FORMAL ORGANIZATIONS this is a study of the impact and developing effects of a series of changes in organizational structure and arrangements in a research and development center over a two-year period.

Written by Gene W. Dalton, associate professor of Organizational Behavior; Louis B. Barnes, professor of Organizational Behavior; and Zaleznik, Cahners-Rabb professor of Social Psychology of Management, it utilizes the approach of a field experiment to assess the effects of these changes on the productivity and satisfaction of the professional personnel engaged in research and development work.

The research focuses on a newly promoted director -- a scientist-executive -- and his organization of some 150 engineers, scientists, and managers engaged in technical development work for the larger parent organization.

The new director introduced a series of ideas designed to alter the authority make-up of the center in an attempt to improve the effectiveness of the organization. These changes are described as structural changes in that they involve shifts from one set of task-people relationships to another.

Because of the two-year period of the study, it was possible to develop, although crudely, a ‘before-after’ and ‘experimental-control’ study design. In this book the researchers not only present an account of how this effort in organizational influence began, developed, and continued over the two-year period, they also analyze and interpret their observations. Two concluding chapters present some differences among the authors in their interpretations and implications of the study.

The 229-page hardbound book was published in this apparent First Edition in 1968 by the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration, Boston. It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. The dust jacket has some minor edge/corner wear. No other defects are apparent. (5897/r14)

Spirituality, Soul Gardening, Good Life

Soul Gardening: Cultivating the Good Life was written by Terry Hershey and published in this 160-page softcover edition in 2000 by Augsburg Fortress Publishers.

This book is about what it means to be a soul gardener. Reading it is somewhat like walking in a garden-where it feels good to be alive, where we may sit for a while and talk about what we’ve learned, and which allows us to be more fully human.

Soul Gardening will not make you a gardener. But it will nurture your soul, teach you how to live, and renew your sense of what it means to live the good life. It is about appreciating the ordinary gifts of grace, the value of solitude, the art of listening, the healing power of nature, finding the balance between loving and losing, creating a sane lifestyle, being fully awake and alive, and the value of slowing down the gift of seeing God's world with new eyes.

The author, a former protestant minister, recounts experiences from his own life, using the metaphor of gardening to speak to our longing for spiritual growth, a healthy lifestyle, and a more centered life. He includes exercises to lead you to your own experiences of the wonder and beauty of daily life.

The book is in Very Good condition, nearly new, and has no apparent defects beyond a small area of label residue on the bottom front cover. (5620/r35)

Choosing Your Doctors, Lawyers, Brokers

Can You Be Sure of Your Experts? is a helpful manual on how to successfully choose and use doctors, lawyers, brokers, and all the other experts in your life.

Written by Roger A. Golde, the book suggests that where matters of substance concerning your personal or family welfare are involved, it is important not to rely on blind "faith in the specialist's shingle," but to know what you as the client-patient can do to get the most out of the various experts.

It discusses direct and indirect methods you can employ to assess the qualifications and performance of professionals in three key fields and tells you how to work along effectively with the practitioner you select. One chapter shows you how to apply the techniques in these primary areas of assistance to the many other specialists you may occasionally consult.

The author gives step-by-step instructions and amusing scenarios to help line up your team of experts before an emergency occurs:
how to find an appropriate specialist,
how to receive the maximum information from an interview,
how to investigate the expert's training, experience and professional affiliations,
how to analyze attitudes and ethics, the expert's methodology, office surroundings and equipment, the expert's relative standing in the profession,
and how to utilize most efficiently the often surprising sources of information which are available once you know where to look.

The 243-page hardbound book was published in this First Printing in 1969 by the Macmillan Company, New York.

It is in Very Good condition although ex lib and having the usual library markings. The dust jacket is present with Mylar protective cover.

If you've ever found yourself needing to find a new lawyer, doctor, or investment adviser, this can be a great help! (1188/r17)
