What Comes After Peace?
There is a world to save – and not much time to do it. That’s the message in THE PERILS OF PEACE – CONVERSION TO WHAT?, written by Donald W. Cox and published in this 1965 First Edition by Chilton Co., Philadelphia. He is aided by a Foreword by Dr. Benjamin Spock.

The book examines what at the time was a growing, yet little known crisis – peace was confronting an American that was ill prepared to wage peace. Never in the history of man had a nation been so strong. One-tenth of the total U.S. labor force was engaged in defense work. In five states, 20 to 30% of all manufacturing employees were working on defense projects.

The author quotes President Dwight Eisenhower as he once sketched the basic problem of a peaceful economy in philosophic terms: ‘Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who are cold and not clothed… is there no other way the world can live?’

The 215-page hardbound book raises some interesting questions – even for today’s world – and the author has found answers – some optimistic, some worrisome, all challenging. It’s an interesting book!

It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. The dust jacket is present and protected with a library-applied Mylar cover. (5550/25r)

Waging Peace in 1950s, Opinions

In WAGING PEACE: A BUSINESSMAN LOOKS AT FOREIGN POLICY C. Maxwell Stanley, an American businessman, presented his opinions on his day's most vital question: How could peace be maintained in an atomic age? It’s a layman's point of view for the average citizen whose stake in a peaceful world was immediate.

As an Iowa engineer, the author was well aware that nuclear warfare meant destruction more horrible and complete than any the world had known. He was unwilling to sacrifice the basic, traditional values for which this country stands; and he proposed that Americans and other free peoples could maintain their way of life and obtain peace provided they cooperated to that end.

Combining idealism with hard-headed realism, Maxwell offered a definite program. He insisted that the United States must remain strong militarily; and he urged that the power of the United Nations be strengthened to prevent conflagration. His was a clear message expressed in lucid terms – and one that responsible citizens found worth serious consideration.

The 256-page hardbound book was published in this stated First Printing in 1956 by the Macmillan Co., New York. It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. The dust jacket has some minor edge/corner wear and there is some tape residue from the dust jacket on end papers. No other defects are apparent. (5898/r14)

UN, Politics of Peace-Keeping Work
Among the first to examine the full range of U.N. peace-keeping activities, THE POLITICS OF PEACE-KEEPING was written by Alan James and published in 1969 for the Institute of Strategic Studies by Frederick Praeger Publishers, New York.

Beginning with the League of Nations, James surveys the history of U.N. peace-keeping operations and the various abortive proposals for such activities. He asks what the United Nations hopes to achieve in such operations, and gives the answers in terms of three distinguishable objectives:

First, there is patching up, where the United Nations tries to bring disputants to agreement or helps them to execute a settlement they have already reached. A second role, seeking a temporary standstill, includes cases where the United Nations, recognizing that agreement is beyond reach, tries to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. Third, the United Nations may try to eradicate underlying hostilities through its operations, that is, it may endeavor to ease political confrontation by neutralizing politically volatile situations.

Within each of these categories, he suggests ways of patching up, methods of stabilization, and means of altering attitudes. Each operation or proposal is discussed in political terms. The situation is explained; reasons for U.N. action or inaction are analyzed; activities of the mission in the field are described; and factors leading to success or failure are examined.

In the concluding chapter, James considers a number of judgments about U.N. peace-keeping: that it is in decline, is a purely postcolonial phenomenon, is dependent on great-power unity (or disunity), and is severely handicapped by lack of advance planning. The author suggests that each particular operation does depend to a large extent on attitudes of the major powers. He concludes that peace-keeping, because it plays a significant role in maintaining international security, will probably continue to be carried on for some time.

The 452-page hardbound book is essential reading for anyone interested in the problems of preserving the security and, indeed, ensuring the survival of the world's nations. It is in Very Good condition – despite being ex lib with the usual library markings, there is no apparent damage to either the book or the mylar-protected dust jacket. (5867)

Facing the Military-Industrial Threat
When President Eisenhower warned in his Farewell Address that ‘we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex,’ he belatedly focused attention on one of the most frightening problems in America -- the inversion of the constitutional and traditional role of the Military as the servant to civilian authority.

The reasons for this development, the consequences to both our domestic and our foreign life, and the measures that must be taken to reverse a course inimical to our deepest principles and terrible in its implications for the future are the problems that concern Fred J. Cook in this shocking book, THE WARFARE STATE.
Often brutally candid, always precise, Cook investigated and documented the historical, political, economic, technological, and psychological reasons for the Military's ascendancy. He defines the alliance of the Military and Industry, and shows the nature and extent of their concerted strength: having put the country on a permanent war economy, they must keep the public mood truculent to justify the need for militarism; having encouraged the Cold War, they must continue to add heat to it. Cook's message is that unless we learn to stop this juggernaut, it will ride down our last hopes for world peace.

With a foreword by Bertrand Russell, the 376-page hardbound book was published in this 1962 First Printing by the Macmillan Co., New York. It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. The dust jacket is present and protected with a mylar cover. We see no apparent defects on either the book or the dust jacket. (5880/rM)

Worried Man's Guide to World Peace
Written by Arthur I. Waskow of the Peace Research Institute, the Worried Man's Guide to World Peace was first published in 1963 by Peter Smith, GLoucester, MA. This is a 1970 Reprint of that edition.

The 219-page hardbound book was written, says the author, for those who are anxious to help gain world peace, but don't have an idea where to begin. And they don't want to just stand there. In the Preface, Waskow tells this story:
We are told that the great Archimedes described his theory of leverage as such: 'Give me a place to stand and I will move the world.' To a great extent, this applies to the task confronting everybody who wants a warless world, because in a very real sense it is the whole world which must be moved, even when it seems immoveable. But where can the worried man stand, and where can he find a lever long enough?

In the ensuing chapters, the author answers that question.

The book is Ex Lib, with the usual library markings. Condition is Very Good with scuffed covers and very minor edge/corner wear. In times such as these, it's an important book to read! (4086)
