Economics of Fatigue and Unrest, 1924
Economics professor P. Sargant Florence, Cambridge University, wrote Economics of Fatigue and Unrest and the Efficiency of Labour in English and American Industry, and the difficult-to-find hardbound book was published in 1924 by Henry Holt and Company, New York. This copy is apparently a first edition.
The 426-page book is divided into three sections. The first covers topics such as the growth of technical efficiency, the labor problem, solutions, and the theory of fatigue and unrest. Florence discusses the Industrial Revolution, the capitalist system, labor as a commodity, the rise and fall of laissez-faire, and the cost and control of human inefficiency.
In his second section, the author deals with the business costs of industrial inefficiency, the loss by labor turnover, loss by absence, loss by deficient output, loss by defect give out put, loss by industrial accidents, loss by industrial ill health, and the significance of fatigue and unrest. Finally, he offers information on the record of labor losses and the record of industrial conditions.
The book is completely indexed and the author substantiates his theories with bibliographic information and numerous tables. Condition is very good overall, although the book is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show some minor wear, with one small cup ring stain on the front. Inside pages are clean, crisp and easily readable. (3957)
