My American Journey by Colin Powell
Colin Powell is the embodiment of the American dream. Born in Harlem to immigrant parents from Jamaica, he knew the rough life of the streets and overcame a barely average start at school. He joined the Army -- and the rest is history. But that history was not completely told until Powell himself told how it happened!
MY AMERICAN JOURNEY is a memoir distinguished by a heartfelt love of country and family, warm good humor, and a soldier’s directness. He writes of the anxieties and missteps, as well as the triumphs that marked his rise to four-star general, National Security Advisor, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, mastermind of Desert Storm, and now Secretary of State and the man much of ht country would most like to draft as president, just as it drafted General Eisenhower in 1952.
The 643-page hardbound book, written with Joseph E. Persico, was published in this 1995 stated First Edition by Random House, New York. It includes two large sections of black/white photos.
Condition is Very Good, with a dust jacket also in Very Good shape. There is a small area on bottom one-inch of the covers where the dark blue binding has faded onto the white boards (evidently this was in a damp location), but there are no other apparent defects on the boards or pages inside. 1950s Jewish Life in America
Written by a Jew and about Jews, Commentary on the American Scene, Portraits of Jewish Life in America is a book about the Jewish immigrant experience in America. It was edited by Eliot E. Cohen and published in this 1953 FIRST EDITION by Knopf, New York, using commentary pieces that were first published in a magazine called From the American Scene that was devoted to Jewish affairs and world issues.
In the introduction, David Riseman speaks of what these pieces show of the Jewish group in the American setting –- their origins, their socio-economic status, etc., They also speak, says the editor, of the extra dimension given to Jewish personality and life by the fact that each Jew moves, consciously or not, in the context of a long and special history and a religious-ethical tradition that lays upon him the sense of being ‘chosen’ and creates the tendency –even the obligation, -- to carry himself with a difference. It is this that plays a persistent counterpoint – humorous, pathetic, tragic, farcical –- to whatever Jews do or are!
The book is fascinating reading – and in Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers do show some minor edge/corner/spine end wear and sun-fading of the spine and cover edges. There is a 1-inch tear at bottom front of spine. Inside pages are without any apparent defects. It’s a book you’ll enjoy – no matter your heritage! (4146)

Women’s Lib – Through the Ages
Written by Janet Harris, A SINGLE STANDARD is about liberation: liberation of women -- and men. Supporters of liberation have been rallying since the days of the French Revolution when Tom Paine wrote the Rights of Man and his friend, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote Vindication of the Rights of Women, for the double standard and the stereotype roles of men and women place crippling limits on how members of both sexes can express themselves.
Harris notes that women have fought alongside men for the abolition of slavery, protective codes for working people and a score of other goals. To reach their full potential as human beings, modern women are calling for equal opportunities in the working world, for child care centers, and for autonomy over their own bodies.
The 144-page hardbound book is about women and men. For, in the words of one young man, ‘If women's lib wins, we all do.’ It was published in 1971 by McGraw-Hill, New York. Condition is Very Good, although the book is ex lib with the usual library markings. There are no apparent defects otherwise on the covers or inside. The dust jacket is present and has a protective covering. (6098/8)

Journalist’s Prelude to WW2
Written by renowned newspaperman and pioneer radio broadcaster William Shirer, who witnessed many of the most historic events of history during the era, THE NIGHTMARE YEARS 1930-1940 is Volume 2 in his ‘20th Century Journey: Memoir of the Life and Times.’
Shirer, it seems, was in the right place at the right time for many earth-shaking events. Prior to the beginning of World War II, he met, knew, talked to and occasionally drank with Goring, Goebbels, Himmler, Hess, Heydrich, Ribbentrop, Eichmann and dozens of High Command officers. He even observed Hitler at first hand.
Most interesting is the personal material -- his career as a radio commentator ended when CBS fired him in 1947, and he reveals the dark role played by Edward R. Murrow. Shirer describes the struggle to support his family during the McCarthy years, then his dramatic success as a best-selling author with the 1960 publication of ‘The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.’
The 654-page hardbound book was published in 1984 by Little, Brown & Co., New York. It is illustrated with black/white photos. A previous owner’s name is handwritten on the inside front. There is some edge wear on the dust jacket. Otherwise, the book is in Very Good condition with no apparent defects, inside or out! (5835/r3)

Van Doren: The Great Rehearsal
Published in 1948 by Viking Press, New York, THE GREAT REHEARSAL is Carl Van Doren’s story of the making and ratifying of the Constitution of the United States – a chapter that according to the author was the most momentous in American history.
The supporters of the Constitution in 1787 knew that they were planning a government only for the United States, but they believed their experiment would instruct and benefit al mankind. Their undertaking might be, though of course no one used the term, a rehearsal for the federal governments of the future.
The 336-page hardbound book includes a sizeable appendix concerning other plans for the U.S. government, as well as a complete index of the material included. A 16-page section near the front features black/white plates of founding fathers and historical landmarks of the revolution.
It is in Very Good condition, with minor edge/corner/spine end wear and a bit of scuffing to the covers. Inside pages show no apparent defects. A terrific look at American Constitutional history! (5370-28)

BEARD: U.S. Constitution: Economic Interpretation
Written by Charles A. Beard, professor of politics at Columbia University, AN ECONOMIC INTERPRETATION OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES was published in 1913 by the Macmillan Co., New York.
Apologizing that the book is ‘frankly fragmentary’ and designed to suggest new lines of historical research rather than treat the subject in an exhaustive fashion, Beard notes that records of the Treasury Department in Washington were being used for the first time in connection with a study of the formation of the Constitution. His preliminary research could be supplemented by another historical scholar using many other records which throw light upon the economic conditions of the U.S. between 1783 and 1787. This could provide a study of the real economic forces which condition great movements in politics.
The 330-page hardbound book offers some very interesting insight and is a very difficult volume to find in today’s marketplace. It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show some very minor corner blunting; the title on spine is somewhat faded. Inside pages are without apparent defects other than a few with edge/corner chipping that doesn’t appear to interfere with the text. (5712/rH)
