1916 German Ruling Caste, Frenzied Trade
This is the authorized translation of Maurice Millioud’s THE RULING CASTE AND FRENZIED TRADE IN GERMANY, published in 1916 by Houghton Mifflin, Boston.

A classic look at the economic situations leading to World War I, the author considers three questions: What was the national sentiment that supported the German government in going to war? What were the aims and policy of German expansion in the years before the war? And third, what made the German ruling classes decide that their ends could not be attained without war?

The 159-page hardbound book is quite difficult to find in today’s market – and this copy is in Good+ condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show very minor corner and spine end wear. The front hinge is loose, but all inside pages are still tightly bound, clean and crisp. (5605)

U.S. in Chaotic World, 1918-1933 THE UNITED STATES IN A CHAOTIC WORLD, by Allan Nevins, was part of the CHRONICLES OF AMERICA, 1918-1933 series published by Yale University Press in 1950. The 252-page hardbound book offers a great look at international affairs during the period just following World War I.

Topics include Guiding Traditions of Foreign Policy; The Lost Peace; Dollars and Cents in Foreign Policy; Plans for Exorcising War; The Turn for the Worse; Japan Defies the World; The American Neighbors; and The Breakdown of Disarmament. There is a reproduction on the frontispiece of the Karl Anderson painting, "The Peace Conference."

The book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. It shows some minor edge/corner/spine end wear to the covers, but inside pages have no apparent defects. It’s a great look at history of the era. (3647)

Dawes Plan, WW1 Reparations, 1927
Ten years after the outbreak of World War I, the adoption of the Dawes Plan for settlement of the reparation question opened a new era in world economic relationships, providing the basis for a new orientation of economic forces in which America, instead of Europe, was to be supreme.

George P. Auld's THE DAWES PLAN AND THE NEW ECONOMICS discusses whether the mechanics of the exchange would seriously hinder or prevent the transfer of German reparation payments into foreign currencies suitable for use by Germany's creditors.

The Foreword is written by Rufus C. Dawes. The hardbound book was published in 1927 by Doubleday, Page & Co., New York, and apparently is a first edition.

It's in Good+ condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. The cover show very minor corner and spine end wear, with a small cut at top edge of the front cover. The front hinge is broken, but inside pages remain clean, crisp and tightly bound. (2175)

1916 Socialist’s Views of America
AMERICA AND THE NEW EPOCH was written by Charles P. Steinmetz, who identifies himself in the book’s introduction as a socialist who took an active part in the 10 years’ political war of the German social democracy against Bismarck, escaped to Switzerland and after continuing his studies there, came to America, where he still was a dues-paying member of the Socialist party organization. He succeeded professionally in engineering and 'the only criticism which I can make is that I would far more enjoy my advantages if I knew that everybody else could enjoy the same.'

Here he discusses what he calls 'conclusions drawn from the historical facts' concerning eras in the world’s history, the French Revolution, the individualistic era, America in the past and in the individualistic era, public and private corporations, democracy and monarchy, evolution of industrial government and inhibitory power, the American nation and the future corporation. It’s fascinating reading!

Published in 1916 (apparently a 1st Ed.) by Harper & Brothers, New York. Hardbound. 229 pages. Ex lib with usual library markings. Good+ condition with very minor corner and spine end wear to covers. Front hinge is broken; inside pages show some yellowing, and title page is chipped at top corner. Still, well worth reading and very difficult to find! (2055)

Cancellation of International War Debts
Compiled by James G. Hodgson, Cancellation of International War Debts is Volume 8, #4 in the Reference Shelf series published in 1932 by the H.W.Wilson Co., New York.

The 226-page hardbound book is a rare one and filled with information on the many problems encountered by the U.S. and its allies as they attempted to collect funds owed at the end of the war. Among the topics covered are international trade, a primer for Congress, debt payments, what cancellation would mean, Germany and the Lausanne conference.

The book includes one fold-out chart that lists the indebtedness of each country in 1920. It's in Good- condition and it is ex lib with the usual library markings. The hinges are loose; spine is torn and repairs were done by library; cover edges and corners show some wear. Still, a fascinating book! (4097)
