NATO in the 1960s

NATO in the 1960s: THE IMPLICATIONS OF INTERDEPENDENCE was written by Alastair Buchan and published in 1960 by Frederick A. Praeger, New York, for the Institute for Strategic Studies, London.

With a Foreword by Marshall of the Royal Air Force Sir John Slessor, the book examines the dangers which confronted the NATO powers as they attempted to meet Soviet threats on individual national bases.

The 131-page hardbound book is a serious and authoritative analysis of all that confronted NATO in the 1960s -- and the principal recommendations the author set forth were probably quite unpalatable to most readers. Still, the logic of his arguments for a greater degree of interdepence within NATO was difficult to dispute.

As we face similar types of problems today with the organization, this provides an interesting look at its beginnings and changes that were or should have been serious considered over the years. It will provide today's NATO proponent -- and critic -- with important ideas!

Condition of the book is Very Good, although it is ex lib and has the usual library markings. The covers show light edge/corner/spine end wear and sun fading on the spine. Inside pages are without defects, however -- clean, complete and readable! The dust jacket is not present, but descriptive information from the jacket is pasted inside the front cover.

The Gentle Legions: Expose of Red Cross?

THE GENTLE LEGIONS is a candid and illuminating analysis of the big, voluntary health organizations: the American Red Cross, the National Foundation (for Infantile Paralysis), the National Tuberculosis Association, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and many others. Each year millions of Americans devote their spare time to the national health groups. These are "The Gentle Legions." They constitute the largest social and humanitarian movement in the United States today.

Author Richard Carter discusses the faults and merits of the health groups and their volunteers. As he tells their often fantastic histories, he shows how they function -- their goals, the fundraising campaigns, and research projects that have resulted' in both miraculous and disastrous discoveries. Interspersed are biographies of the people behind these major philanthropic efforts, the geniuses of organization who make this a multimillion dollar operation. The last third of the book discloses the bitter struggle waged in many American communities between local United Funds and national organizations.

More than just an entertaining report of "national giving" and voluntarism, this 335-page hardbound book is a thought-provoking study of the sociology, economics, and ethics of modern medical charity. It was published in 1961 by Doubleday, Garden City, NY, and is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. We see no apparent defects on this one, inside or out! 1929 American Municipal Assn. Proceedings

This hardbound edition of PROCEEDINGS, FIFTH MEETING OF THE AMERICAN MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATION was edited by John G. Stutz and published by the Association, Lawrence Kansas, in 1929.

Noting that the numerous state leagues of cities, even with their more or less disorganized manner of working and their 'trial and error' methods, have been most useful and practical agencies for helping city officials, Stutz asserted that the American Municipal Association offered a technique of state municipal league administration that would assist these local organizations to do a better job.

This 5th national meeting, then, included a program dealing with Editorial Policies,Selling Advertising Space,Planning and Building for the Motor Age,Mutual Advertising Agreements, Organizing a Bureau of Municipal Research, Objectives of City Government, Joining National Fire Waste Council, Schools for Municipal Officials, Functions of a State League of Municipalities, and General Information Services. The topics are covered in discussions, addresses and reports - each published verbatim here. And, for those who pursue research in genealogy, the names, titles and cities of all attendees of the meeting are included.

If you are interested in municipal government - and its history - this is a must! The book itself is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is minor edge/corner and spine end wear. Inside pages, however, are without defects we can find. This is a beauty!
