Early Guide to Historical Fiction
Published in 1914 by George Routledge & Sons, London, Ernest A. Baker’s A GUIDE TO HISTORICAL FICTION provides a very thorough guide to all areas of historical fiction – including children’s literature!
The 570-page hardbound book (it’s very heavy!) covers plot, synopses and descriptive notes for fiction written throughout the world from Britain under the Romans to the U.S. in 1900; from the earliest times in Asia, Australasia, Africa, Spain and Portugal, Scandinavia, Denmark and Iceland, Russia and Poland, The Netherlands, Holland and Belgium, Italy, Greece, the Balkan States, Turkey, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and France.
Unfortunately, the book has seen some wear – the front cover is loose from the text. It’s probably well worth restoration, however, since most other facets of the structure and appearance are without serious defects. There is minor edge/corner and spine end wear, but inside pages are clean, crisp and easily read – with no apparent defects. It is ex lib with the usual library markings. If you want a very helpful book about books, this may be it! (5847/r8)

America’s Romantic Gospels
EVERYMAN HIS OWN POET concerns itself with how the authors of some of the greatest works of American literature -- Moby Dick, Walden, Leaves of Grass, Nature, The Education of Henry Adams, The Bridge, and Paterson, among others -- were forced into the position of having to create cosmologies, theories about the universe, in order to write meaningfully about America.
According to Professor A. D. Van Nostrand, the authors of the ‘romantic gospels’ examined in this book were all striving to write the epic of the New World. They lacked, however, definite cultural reference points with their audience (for, in a sense, their very works were to create American culture). Thus to write their novels or essays or poems was not enough; they had to make proselytes for them as well.
Hence the evangelistic strain particular to much of our literature and, the author claims, discernible in dozens of other works, including the poems of Emily Dickinson and Wallace Stevens. the fiction of Mark Twain, Henry James and William Faulkner and the autobiographical essays of Ernest Hemingway and Norman Mailer. In a land as free from the encumbrance of history as America, no man has a monopoly on the truth, however keen his perception.
The Romantic artist's revelations thus have no authority greater (or louder) than his own ability to stump for them, to promote them. This ideological huckstering, however innocent its motives, is central to the American experience. Not only is it responsible for some of our most enduring literature, but, Van Nostrand believes, it plays a major role in such disparate but wholly American phenomena as the Peace Corps and the Alliance for Progress. (Indeed, the emotional attitudes underlying the Beat and the Hippie movements, as well as the myth of the Great Society, owe much to this ‘practical idealism.’)
The scope of this highly original book is as wide as its subject matter. Not only is a theory of literature propounded, but also a theory about our national character. It just may itself become an American classic.
The 271-page hardbound book was published in this stated first edition in 1968 by McGraw-Hill Book Co., New York. It is in Very Good condition – despite being ex lib with the usual library markings, there is no apparent damage to either the book or the mylar-protected dust jacket. (5859/rE)

German Library Architecture, 1950s
Written by Werner Mevissen – a librarian who built his own libraries in Bremen and studied library architecture in the U.S., Sweden, Denmark and Germany -- and published in 1958 by Verlag Ernst Heyer, PUBLIC LIBRARY BUILDING provides an interesting view of post World War II changes in the use of public libraries.
As Mevissen notes, libraries were forced to reorganize their collections following the war because the system changed from a counter system to one where the books were accessible to all patrons. Details such as the calculation of necessary useful space, a functional form of furniture or the technical equipment of library rooms are no less important than the more general reflections on the idea of the public library, on its location and decentralization, on the relation of children’s and adult libraries or on architecture and design.
The 256-page hardbound book features numerous black/white photos of library settings, as well as floor plans and other architectural design drawings. In the back few pages of the book are catalog pages of library shelving and seating.
The book was printed in Germany and the text appears in both German and English. It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. The covers show minor scuffs and some edge/corner/spine end wear, with a cut on back of spine. Inside pages show no apparent defects. (5984/r18)

The Art of Fiction, Esthetic Analysis
There is probably no contemporary writer better qualified to discuss the ‘art of fiction’ than William Gass. His knowledge and understanding of his subject come from the point of view of both a practitioner (his novel, Omensetter's Luck, is already considered one of the most important novels of the postwar era) and a theoretician (as a philosopher and critic, he has written dozens of articles and reviews).
In FICTION AND THE FIGURES OF LIFE, his discussion returns fiction to the issues, including language and the individual trademarks of various writers. He makes an important distinction between the philosopher and the writer of fiction: their jobs are the same, that is, telling ‘how it is,’ but their methods are different. He talks about writers from Shakespeare to Coover, with stops along the way for Gertrude Stein, Nabokov, the James family, and several others. He asserts that there ‘are no descriptions in fiction, there are only constructions,’ and, using examples from a selection of works, proves his point.
According to the publisher, this analysis of the esthetic of fiction provides students and writers of fiction with the most important book of its sort since Eric Auerbach's Mimesis.
The 288-page hardbound book was published in this 1970 stated First Edition by Alfred A. Knopf, New York. It is in Very Good condition – despite being ex lib with the usual library markings, there is no apparent damage to either the book or the mylar-protected dust jacket. (5866/r7)
