The Newspaper - By NY TIMES Editors, 1945 Written by the staff of the New York Times and with an introduction by Dr. John E. Wade, The Newspaper - Its Making & Its Meaning was published in 1945 by Scribner's Sons, New York.

The book is made up of a series of addresses by New York Times editors and staff to New York Public School Teachers. It's an excellent, but dated primer on publishing a newspaper. With 207 pages, the hardbound book is in Good- and Ex Lib, with the usual library markings. Some inside pages dog-eared. Covers are slightly scuffed, with some edge/corner/spine end wear.

How 1960s Changed the Media

The sixties stand out as a period of revolutionary upheaval and the institutions which were part of this decade were changed, often significantly. This upheaval was reflected in a number of ways, but perhaps most significantly in the decade's media.

In PRINT, IMAGE AND SOUND: ESSAYS ON MEDIA, edited by John Gordon Burke, five essays describe the media of the 1960s, the effect of the decade on the media . . . .and of the considerable effect of the media on the decade. Each essay is accompanied by a bibliography, and the authors in each essay have attempted to isolate the trends and developments which will characterize the 1970s.

The essays, as a result, provide the reader with a key to understanding the media not only in the past, but in the present as well.

Contributors include James Ridgeway, former associate editor of the New Republic and an
editor of Ramparts. He is one of the important figures in the development of ‘The New Journalism’ about which he writes. Charles T. Samuels, regular film columnist for the American Scholar and a professor of English at Williams College is noted for his Casebook on Film, but has also written books on the cinema: Mastering the Film and Encountering Directors. His topic is ‘Cinema in the Sixties.’ Fred Ferretti writes on ‘Educational Television;’ Len Fulton writes on ‘Little Magazines of the Sixties;’ and John Burke discusses Popular Music of the Sixties.’

The 181-page hardbound book was published in 1972 by the American Library Association, Chicago. It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. There are no apparent defects on the mylar-covered dust jacket, and the cover edges show only slight shelf wear. (5990/r18)

Mass Media and National Development
More than seventy countries were trying to accomplish what Julius Nyerere of Tanganyika called the terrible ascent from traditional society to economic and social modernity. How much easier would this climb have been if they had applied the full strength of modern communication to the task?

That was the question posed by Wilbur Schramm in his challenging book, MASS MEDIA AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: THE ROLE OF INFORMATION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES Based on case studies and research from many countries, it was published jointly by the Stanford University Press and Unesco in 1964.

After an introductory section on the meaning of ‘underdeveloped,’ the book analyzes the role of information in economic and social development, and identifies what the mass media can do directly and what it can only hope to do. Chapters on the flow of information and the distribution of communication facilities in the world present data and assessments to be found nowhere else. After examining the costs and requirements of mass media systems, the book points out ways in which the media can be of direct assistance to natlonal growth.

Fernand Terrou, one of the world's leading scholars on communication law, contributes a chapter on institutional and legal problems of the mass media in new countries.

The 333-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. There are no apparent defects on the book or on the mylar-covered dust jacket. (6000)

Battling Censorship, Post McCarthy
Written by Paul Blanshard and published in this 1956 Second Printing by Beacon Press, Boston, THE RIGHT TO READ: BATTLE AGAINST CENSORSHIP offers a look at censorship and freedom of the press in post-McCarthy America.

The book is built around two questions: How much literary freedom exists in the United States? And how much should exist? In attempting to answer, the author acts as a part-time literary war correspondent, roving very rapidly over the most significant censorship battlefields of recent years.

To avoid confusion he discusses the questions not according to geographical location, but according to moral content, reviewing the great problem areas where censorship has become a factor because people consider the ideas in those areas worthy of protection. He tries to add to treatment of each problem-area enough moral speculation and elementary law to make this a practical handbook for the common reader who wishes to know why and how to defend the right to read.

Among the examples cited are changes made in the Girl Scout handbook (deleting references to 'one world' and internationalism) as a result of attacks upon it for recommending such ‘un-American’ books as Langston Hughes’ The First Book of Negroes.

Still timely, provocative and important, the 339-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some minor edge/corner wear to the covers, but inside pages have no apparent defects. Interesting! (6114/red9rev)

History, Development of International TV

November 2, 1936 marked the inauguration of the first public television broadcasting service in the world at London's Alexandra Palace. Here, the BBC tested two systems for transmitting television images - the culmination of decades of experimentation by scientists in half a dozen countries. Wilson P. Dizard's TELEVISION: A WORLD VIEW reviews the history, contemporary status and trends of television communications. It was published in this FIRST EDITION in 1966 by Syracuse University Press.

Chapter topics include TV's global networks; TV politics; TV stars Castro, deGaulle, Nasser; U.S. TV's overseas markets; communist TV; ETV, the European and Japanese experience; and TV signals from space. An appendix offers a statistical summary of overseas TV as well as notes on the research and a complete bibliography and index. Black/white photos illustrate the topics.

Condition of this fascinating history is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Beyond the few minor cover scuffs, however, there are no other apparent defects - inside or out. It's a great one! (3130/rP)
