1948 Early Mayer's Market Ad Calendar

This was one of the first photo calendars from Mayer's North Street Food Market in Marshalltown, Iowa. The store closed last year, after 65 years in business, and was the last of its kind in the city!

Advertising Groceries, Meats and Vegetables, the calendar features a different page for every month, with recipes and household hints on the back and a pocket on each to hold additional recipes, receipts, etc.

There's even a short pencil on the metal hanger at top and a listing of cooking terms and tables on the back page.

The soft-cover, leatherette-looking book held a page for each day of the year, showing the date at top and listing an insurance product with the company’s logo at the bottom. Space between was left for notes.

The book is in Good condition, although it shows some use. The first 30 days of January have been removed. The final 3 days of the year show some pencil notations. Covers are a bit worn on the edges, but still complete and tightly bound. (6430)

1954 Calendar, Kids Grinding Hamburger

One of the taboos for the kids of Mayer’s North Street Market, Marshalltown, Iowa, was the Meat Department … where sharp knives and saws were the potential villains. Yet, when it was time for the 1954 store calendar, Dad and Mom let the young ‘uns have a go at grinding beef for the meat case.

Obviously, Dad didn’t really mean for them to grind that gorgeous T-Bone and Porterhouse steak meat that was on the counter, but it appears that went into the grinder, too, when he wasn’t looking!

According to the legend on the photo attached to this 1954 calendar, "Sharon Ann and Larry Mayer Would Like to ‘Meat’ You," and that’s probably what happened!

This was one of many years of calendars from the neighborhood grocery store - which is still in business and the last in the city! There's even a neat little pencil on the metal hanger at top. The back of the calendar provides a useful table of Basic Proportions, with the basic recipes for making biscuits, griddle cakes, muffins and more. It's handy for those 'recipes you know so well from using over and over again that you don't need a cookbook!'

‘Out to rope business for Mayer’s North Street Market,’ the youngest clerk in the store dressed in her cowgirl outfit and sat in front of a pretty Navajo rug for this 1950 calendar. The store closed in 2003, after 65 years in business, and was the last of its kind in the city!

This was the very first photo calendar from Mayer's North Street Food Market in Marshalltown, Iowa, and the new little gal shown here was happy to lie on her ‘Little Miss Muffet’ quilt and smile at customers. The store closed in 2003, after 65 years in the family, and was the last of its kind in the city!

This family portrait was the last photo calendar from Mayer's North Street Food Market in Marshalltown, Iowa. The store closed last year, after 65 years in business, and was the last of its kind in the city!

Advertising Groceries, Meats and Vegetables, the calendar features a different page for every month, with recipes and household hints on the back and a "pocket" on each to hold additional recipes, receipts, etc.

There's even a short pencil on the metal hanger at top and a page with hints for home freezing of foods on the inside of back page. The back of the calendar provides a useful Table of Meat Cuts, naming and describing normal butcher cuts for beef, veal, pork and lamb. It's handy! The calendar was delivered in a complimentary refrigerator bag.

It's been 51 years since these two were in charge of the produce counter at Mayer's North Street Food Market in Marshalltown, Iowa, and the store finally closed its doors in November, 2003. It was the last of its kind in the city!

It's been 55 years since this proud little girl carefully printed, in kindergarten scrawl, the heading on this 1951 calendar from Mayer's North St. Market.

When things were slow around Mayer's North Street Market, these two would grab an old Rath Lard tin for their bait and go 'Fishing For Business,' according to the legend on the photo attached to this 1953 calendar.
