Modern Democracy, Old and New England
Here’s a rare copy of Charles Borgeaud’s THE RISE OF MODERN DEMOCRACY IN OLD AND NEW ENGLAND, published in 1894 by Swan Sonnenschein & Co., London. It was translated by Mrs. Birkbeck Hill and has a Preface by C. H. Firth, Balliol College, Oxford.

A renowned historian, Borgeaud discussed the following topics:

The Rise of Modern Democracy in England
Modern Democracy as a result of the Reformation
Puritanism and the English Revolution (Early Puritans, Thomas Cartwright, Admonitions to Parliament, Political Life stirred by Puritans, spread of Puritan Doctrines, James I, Hampton Court Conference, Charles I, Presbyterians and the Covenant, Independents, Writings of Robert Brown, Congregationalism, Dissenters and the Army of Cromwell, Coup d’Etat of the Independents, Petition of ht Army, Proposals for a Constitution to be submitted to a vote of the people)
History of the Agreement of the People (Army and Democrats of Southwark, John Lilburne, Remonstrance of 1646, Disbanding of troops, agitators, rendezvous of Newmarket and Triploe Heath, Declaration to Parliament, Policy of Cromwell, Grandees and Democrats, ‘the case of the Army’, debates in Council of Officers, Resistance of Cromwell, Rendezvous at Ware, Military Execution, Democrats’ firmness, Victory over Cromwell, Agreement presented to Parliament by General-in-Chief)
The Idea of a Constitution Established by the People (Social contract, origin of theory, first form, contract between Prince and People, Contract between individuals, Hooker, Hobbes, Milton, Locke, Rousseau, Brownism as it affected the Theory of a Contract, Church Covenants, Law affecting ancient Gilds, Need of definition of the powers of Parliament)
The Fall of the Democratic Party (Agreement abandoned by Cromwell, Military Insurrection, New proposals of Lilburne, the Plot suppressed, Cromwell dictator)

Early Democratic Institutions of New England
Contract of the Mayflower (Brownish Church of Robinson, Church covenants, origin of political agreements)
Connecticut (opinion differences among early Congregationalists, democracy and theocracy, settlements in Connecticut, fundamental orders of Connecticut, statutes of ancient gilds, organization of Brotherhoods of Middle Ages, Exercise of Constitutional power by the Brethren, amendment of the fundamental orders, constitution of New Haven, theory of Mr. Brooks Adams, mistaken theory of the German origin of these constitutions)
Massachusetts (First charter, religious ideas of emigrants, growth of idea of aristocracy, theocracy, democratic opposition, two republics of Massachusetts and of Calvin)
Rhode Island (Providence founded by Roger Williams, First covenant and fundamental articles of 1640, Colonization of Aquidneck [Rhode Island], charter of the Providence plantation, organization of democratic government, valuable help rendered by Roger Williams, second charter of 1663, the Cradle of American democracy.)

It’s a fascinating book – written by an expert in not only American and British government, but in Democracy itself! Condition of this 168-page hardbound book is Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. The coves show wear to edges/corners and spine ends and some scuffs are in evidence. The spine itself is missing. Front hinge is broken, but pages are still intact and tightly bound. The front and back loose endpapers are coming loose from binding, but still attached. There is some age-yellowing inside, but all pages are still clean and readable.

This book is quite scarce – with the only other copy we’ve found for sale being listed in the $100. range. Here’s a bargain for your library – don’t miss it! (4192B)

True & False Democracy, Butler

In the Introduction to his TRUE AND FALSE DEMOCRACY, first published in 1907 and reprinted in this 1940 edition by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, Columbia University President Nicholas Murray Butler wrote:

There has been no need to change a single introduction word in any of the three addresses again printed in this volume. A full generation ago they were delivered at the University of California, at the University of Michigan and before the National Education Association, meeting at Buffalo, New York. Plainly the problems which today hold the entire world in their grasp were then already above the horizon for those who had eyes to see. Democracy is the government of all by all for the benefit of all. Mazzini offered an enlightening interpretation of democracy: it is, he said, "the progress of all through all, under the leadership of the wisest and best." It is that type of democracy which is interpreted and defended in these addresses.

Butler’s discussion centers on:

TRUE AND FALSE DEMOCRACY . . . Problems of to-day chiefly economic and social. What is democracy? Equality versus liberty. Has liberty lost its charm? The socialist propaganda. Need of a real aristocracy. True versus false democracy. The real representative. Is democracy a failure? Political and economic exploitation. A definition of public property needed. The mob versus the people. The problem of wealth. Effective expression of public opinion. Our three political agencies. Legislative usurpation. The Executive as representative of the people. Confusion of government and administration. Evils of false democracy. Ideals of true democracy.

EDUCATION OF PUBLIC OPINION. . . Place of public opinion in a democracy. Public opinion a new creation. Passing of class distinctions. Complex relationships of the individual. The bad citizen. The individual and the mass. Part played by unconscious imitation. Uneven progress of public opinion. The life in a democracy. Relation of the individual to public opinion. The party system. Action independent of party. The leader and the boss. Value of party organization. Business in politics. Individual responsibility for public policy.

DEMOCRACY AND EDUCATION. . . Quo vadis? The new era. Spread democracy . Equality and liberty. Education and politics. The individual and the, state. Education in a democracy. The good Citizen. Bad effect of the spoils system. Imperfections of democracy. Triumphant democracy.

The discussions are pointed and well thought-out. The 111-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is very minor edge/corner/spine end wear on the covers, with only slight tanning of the inside pages. It’s a good one! (3385)

1926, Democratic Way of Life

When Thomas Vernon Smith wrote this book, which was published in 1926 by the University of Chicago Press, the nation was very much aware of the importance of democracy. THE DEMOCRATIC WAY OF LIFE, a small, 211-page hardbound book, allowed him to extol its virtues once again, while also reminding citizens of their responsibilities. In his Preface, Smith wrote:

DEMOCRACY is a doctrine of both means and ends. While technicians work at the former, the latter must not be lost to view. For without the emotional urge that comes from contemplation of our goals, we shall degrade humanity's greatest enthusiasm into a barren formalism. This solicitude is not pointless at our present juncture in America. Science itself sometimes learns so well how to do as to forget what it is that is to be done. The following popular exposition of democratic ideals is meant to season daily duties with the joy of social vision.

And he placed those discussions in chapters entitled:
TOWARD THE DEMOCRATIC WAY OF LIFE
DEMOCRACY AS FRATERNITY
DEMOCRACY AS LIBERTY
DEMOCRACY AND THE DAY'S WORK
DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP

The book is a good one! Condition is Good+, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. The covers show wear on edges, corners and spine ends, with a few scuffs. The hinges are loose, but it appears all inside pages are still tightly bound. All are also clean and easily readable. Here’s another title that’s becoming quite difficult to find on today’s market. Don’t miss it! (3384)

The Patriotic Thing
Written by William O. Stevens and published by Dodd, Mead, New York, in 1940 -– just prior to the U.S. entry into World War II -- THE PATRIOTIC THING offers a wide vision of just what it means to be an American.

The 174-page hardbound book covers numerous topics related to democracy – American citizenship, other democratic countries, dictator nations, what is liberty? Dictatorship in a democracy, what is democracy? What America has achieved, what America still has to do, a friendly government, what an American owes his country, youth and citizenship. With each chapter are ideas for discussion of that topic.

The book is in Good+ condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show some edge/corner/spine end wear. Inside pages show slight yellowing, but no other apparent defects. What a great reminder of a citizen’s responsibilities – even in today’s world! (4200)
