Bertrand Russell on Industry, Civilization Written by Bertrand Russell, in collaboration with Dora Russell,THE PROSPECTS OF INDUSTRIAL CIVILIZATION was published in 1923 by the Century Co., New York.

The authors traveled in Russia and China, agreeing that the important fact of the time was not the struggle between communism and socialism, but the struggle between industrial civilization and humanity. They noted that World War I had taught most intelligent people that the greatest problem of the future was ‘the adjustment of mechanical organization to minister to individual freedom and happiness. Herd instinct, relic of a more barbaric phase, has to be diminished and herd complexes dissolved without dissolving the organization of life that was previously the means of increasing comfort and intelligence.’

So, they discuss here causes of the present chaos; inherent tendencies of industrialism; industrialism and private property; interactions of industrialism and nationalism; the transition to internationalism; socialism in undeveloped countries and advanced countries; what makes a social system good or bad; moral standards and social well-being; sources of power; distribution of power; education; and economic organization and mental freedom.

The book is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show edge/corner/spine end wear; inside pages have no apparent defects. A great book – and a difficult one to find these days! (5700)

McLuhan Hot & Cool

McLuhan, Marshall (Editor: Gerald E. Stearn)

1967 - 1st Printing, New York: Dial Press

312 pgs. Ex Lib. DJ w/protective cover.

A number of critics (Susan Sontag, Dwight Macdonald, Howard Gossage, Harold Rosenber, George Steiner, Tom Wolfe et al.) offered their opinions on the ideas of Marshall McLuhan, ideas which have had an extraordinary impact upon the intellectual community, as well as upon industry and the communications media. Whether pro or con, no critic has been able to deny the fact that the questions he raised about the radically changed and changing world of post-Gutenberg man, and the effects of expanded communication upon the modern sensibility will reverberate for years to come. Communication; Social Problems

Very Good, with Minor wafflng of DJ/front endpaper. (3898)

Havelock Ellis On Love, Sex and Virtue The art of making love and the art of being virtuous … remain essentially the same in all ages and among all people. That's the view of Havelock Ellis, author of LITTLE ESSAYS OF LOVE AND VIRTUE. This was published in 1930 by Doubleday, Doran & Co., Garden City NY.

And Ellis is no stranger to these topics, having written major works on the Psychology of Sex, Man and Woman, and Social Hygiene. This 187-page hardbound book covers what Ellis calls the little modifications that become necessary in relationships.

Chapter titles include Children and Parents, the Meaning of Purity, Objects of Marriage, Husbands and Wives, Love-Rights of Women, the Play-Function of Sex and the Individual and the Race.

Condition is Good+, although the book is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show no serious damage with just slight scuffing. The front hinge is broken, but all pages inside are still tightly bound. The inside pages show no apparent defects. It's an interesting view of love, sex and virtue in the early third of the 20th Century! (3128/r26)

Designing the Future, 1960s Tech Forecasts

The exciting possibilities for future technological development are explored in DESIGNING THE FUTURE, THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGICAL FORECASTING, a pioneer work on technological forecasting in American society. Author Robert W. Prehoda demonstrates that it is not utopian thinking to expect that we will be able to "cure" the aging process, extending the lifespan 100 years, 200 years, or indefinitely. Human hibernation or suspended animation may allow many to bypass the immediate future and emerge in a golden age with the vigor and industry of youth reawakened. Bacterial and viral disease, stroke, heart disease, and cancer may be entirely eliminated.

Computer-controlled teaching machines will painlessly impart new knowledge, and chemicals may improve memory and actually raise basic intelligence. Technological forecasting will solve pollution and transportation problems. The space program will be expanded to include the exploration and possible exploitation of the entire solar system. . . and beyond.

Published in this 1967 FIRST EDITION by Chilton Book Co., Philadelphia, this is among the first comprehensive descriptions of technological forecasting, which the author says will be an increasingly important discipline using the scientific" method to make accurate predictions of future biological and physical science achievements. Such predictions would allow control and guidance of scientific development leading to the optimum improvement of the human condition.

The 310-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. We see no defects on either the covers or inside pages, and the dust jacket is present and protected with a Mylar cover. It's a fascinating 1960s look at many of the changes we've already seen! A great one! (3081/rQ)
