Black History: NEGRO POLITICS 1960
One of the early ‘modern’ studies of African-American politics, NEGRO POLITICS, THE SEARCH FOR LEADERSHIP was written by University of Chicago political science professor James Q. Wilson and published in this 1960 edition by the Free Press of Glencoe, Illinois.

Wilson divides his book into three major sections: Organization of Negro Political Life (Negro Politics in the North, Negro Politics in Chicago, Negro-White Political Relations in Chicago); Organization of Negro Civic Life (Ecology and Civic Life, Negro Civic Forces in Chicago, Negro Press, Mass Organization, the Negro and White Businessmen, the Negro and White Allies, Interracial Attitudes); Character of Negro Public Life (Goals of Negro Leaders, Political Styles, Types of Negro Civic Leaders, Character of Negro Civic Action, the Negro in the North.)

The author brings a bright light into a previously obscure area and offers a sympathetic picture of a splintered community with too many leaders, too many programs and too little power. His writing includes notes on sources of his material and the 342-page hardbound book is completely indexed.

Condition of the book is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some very minor edge/corner wear on the covers; inside pages have no apparent defects. (4346)

Inter-Racial Love in the Shadows, 1960s
An English reporter, in this country as a foreign correspondent for Britain's Manchester Guardian, fell in love with an American girl he met in the South. Their courtship was stormy in the very nature of its setting: he was covering race riots and she was a Negro.

Bill Weatherby met Christina in New Orleans at an 'integration party' soon after his arrival in this country. It was 1960. For Weatherby, the bloom was still on the South -- the legendary charm seemed real.

It became reality of another sort the day he watched four Negro children walk through a howling, spitting mob of white Southerners to enroll in a white elementary school.

The hatred and viciousness, were soon translated for Weatherby into the personal nightmare of loving a Negro -- the fear of meetings, the dread of partings, the drawn-out poignancy of coming together against a background of violence.

By getting to New York, Weatherby thought he and the girl would stand a chance for a life together. But in New York he found yet other obstacles to their relationship -– and she found, in her own desperation, the Black Muslim movement.

LOVE IN THE SHADOWS was written by William J. Weatherby and published in 1966 by Stein & Day, New York.

The 182-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is minor edge/corner wear to the covers, but inside pages have no apparent defects. The dust jacket is present and protected with a plastic covering. (4519)

The Riot Report, 1969
Written by Barbara Ritchie, THE RIOT REPORT is a shortened version of the Report of the National Advisory Commission of Civil Disorders, a group which had been appointed by the president to investigate 1960s riots in American cities and answer questions such as what happened, why did it happen and what could be done to prevent it happening again.

The report was released in March, 1968 and went far beyond those issues. It painted a devastating picture of the divided society -– black and white -– which made up the U.S.

The Commission’s report is valuable reading for all Americans who are concerned about the future of society and this abridged version, profusely illustrated with powerful photographs, contains the essence of that report for readers of all ages.

The 254-page hardbound book was published in 1969 by the Viking Press, New York, and includes both a bibliography and index. This copy appears to be a FIRST EDITION.

Condition is Very Good, although the book is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some scuffing and light edge/corner wear to the covers; inside pages, however, have no apparent defects.

It’s a great record of a very important document! (4410)

Black Racial Attitudes,Trends, Complexities
Monitoring the shift in alienation of blacks from white society in the 1970s, as well as the trend toward greater Black consciousness and the increasing advocacy or acceptance of militancy to attain equality, BLACK RACIAL ATTITUDES, TRENDS AND COMPLEXITIES was written by Howard Schuman and Shirley Hatchett.

The 157-page hardbound book was published in this 1974 FIRST EDITION by the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Citing a report of the Kerner Commission that 'Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white – separate and unequal,' the authors report on factors associated with the apparently growing tendency among blacks to view with distrust white attitudes and white behavior.

And, in these pages, they describe how questions by interviewers elicited significantly different responses, depending on the race of the interviewer.

Condition of the book is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show only very slight scuffing on the back; inside pages show no apparent defects. The dust jacket is missing, but its informational flap is glued inside the front cover.

Here’s a very difficult to find book -– and a book of considerable interest not only to social scientists studying race relations, but to all persons seeking understanding of black racial attitudes in America. (4438)

The Riddle of American Racism
Providing a unique historical record for the roots of the race hatred that has troubled the United States since it began, THE RIDDLE OF RACISM was written by Carl S. Hirsch and published in this 1972 FIRST EDITION by The Viking Press, New York.

The author uses a chronological framework to trace his search for scientific knowledge of race as a biological phenomenon against the background of political events that reveal its sociological aspects.

The scientific struggle focuses on the question of 'superior' and 'inferior' races, from a time when white supremacy was the prevailing view of the America's political, social and religious leaders, including those opposed to slavery, to today’s understanding of a concept of race -– and its biological and cultural significance. Along the way, the reader meets many individuals whose personal stories illuminate the perpetual questions underlying the racism problem.

The 222-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. We see no defects at all on the inside pages; the covers have only very slight wear on the corners and spine ends.

It’s a well thought-out book – and written in a way that makes the subject very interesting. (4413)

Confrontation: Politics and Protest
Here’s a very informative -– and very scarce -– hardbound book specifically written to examine the turbulent political climate of the United States during the 1950s-60s. It’s CONFRONTATION: POLITICS AND PROTEST, written by Michael Dorman and published in this 1974 FIRST PRINTING by the Delacorte Press, New York.

From its origins in the activist phase of the 1950s civil rights movement to its violent expression in terrorist snipings, arson and bombings, Dorman assesses its aims, techniques and results.

The 'politics of confrontation' burst onto the scene as a familiar part of American life and a symbol of a new lifestyle in the struggle for equal rights, rebellion on campus, the peace movement, confronting the political party processes and resorting to terrorism.

A final chapter provides Dorman’s view of what lies ahead. It's well-written and well documented -– a fascinating look at how we’ve been led to today’s problems!

Condition of the book is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. We see no apparent defects on either the covers or inside pages. The dust jacket is present and protected with a plastic cover.

This book is a very helpful guide for young people who want to understand why we are where we are! And it’s a rare one, too! Don’t miss it! (4437)

Black History: Profile of Negro American
Offering an invaluable source of insight for all who are interested in the struggle for equal rights, A PROFILE OF THE NEGRO AMERICAN was written by Thomas F. Pettigrew and published in 1964 by D. Van Nostrand Co., Princeton NJ. It offers a report on the Negro American near the middle of the 20th century – his personality, his genetic composition, his mental and physical health, his intelligence, his crime rate, and his protest.

According to the publisher, if Negroes had not accepted American society, if they had not adopted the larger group’s values and aspiration, the pattern of discrimination would not have such a demoralizing effect. The frustration comes of his accepting as valuable all that the rest of America treasures, but being held back from achieving the very goals for which society urges all citizens to strive.

Pettigrew discusses the popular prejudices, myths, ideas and fallacies concerning the Negro American of the 1960s, and demonstrates that many Negro characteristics thought to be racial are, in fact, the combined result of poverty and discrimination. The 250-page hardbound book includes references to 565 books, articles and studies.

Condition is Very Good, although the book is ex lib with the usual library markings. There are no apparent defects on the covers or inside pages. The dust jacket is present and protected with a clear vinyl cover. (4343)

SCARCE! Tell It Like It Is, Black Press
Written by newspaper columnist Chuck Stone, who was called the 'Angry Young Man of the Negro Press,' TELL IT LIKE IT IS was published in this 1957 SECOND PRINTING by the Trident Press, New York.

In the hardbound book’s 211 pages are a compilation of Stone’s columns from his work for New York Age, the Washington Afro-American and the Chicago Defender.

A number of the columns, such as 'Why Negro Men Wear Mustaches' and 'Why Negro Men Like Big Legs,' have gone on to become a part of Negro folklore.

According to Stone, the bind in which the Negro constantly finds himself concerns the difference between what happened as reported by the white press, what happened as reported in the Negro press, and what really happened.

One of the rare correctives, over the years, has been the handful of extremely provocative Negro columnists who have tried to 'tell it like it was.' He's among the best of those!

And most of these columns on the American racial scene have been directed at The Establishment or at white society, with barbs of deft satire, biting prose and a wicked humor.

The book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some very minor wear on cover edges, but we see no other defects on either the covers or inside pages. The dust jacket is present and protected with a plastic cover.

It's a good one –- and quite difficult to find these days! (4436)
