Race and Science, 1961, UNESCO Incorporating scientific materials compiled by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNESCO), THE RACE QUESTION IN MODERN SCIENCE – RACE AND SCIENCE was published in 1961 by Columbia University Press, New York. The 506-page hardbound book provides an inventory of the current state of knowledge and research of ten contributors on questions of race:

Racial Myths, Juan Comas; Race and Society, Kenneth Little; The Jewish People, A Biological History, Harry L. Shapiro; Race and Culture, Michel Leiris; Race and History, Claude Levi-Strauss; Race and Biology, L. C. Dunn; The Significance of Racial Differences, G. M. Morant; Race Mixture, Harry L. Shapiro; The Roots of Prejudice, Arnold M. Rose; Race and Psychology, Otto Klineberg; Race Relations and Mental Health, Marie Jahoda. Each presents and introduction to the field, followed by specific information and a bibliography. The appendix includes guidelines on how UNESCO approaches the problem, as well as reports on progress in 1950 and 1951. It’s quite interesting!

Condition of the book is Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show some very minor edge/corner wear, but the inside pages have no apparent defects. The hinges, however, are both broken. Still, it’s a good one – and quite valuable in today’s marketplace. (4391)

Black History: 1957 School Desegregation

An objective, firsthand report on the measures taken by southern and border states to comply with or counter the Supreme Court’s historic ruling, WITH ALL DELIBERATE SPEED, SEGREGATION-DESEGREGATION IN SOUTHERN SCHOOLS was edited by Don Shoemaker
and published in 1957 by Harper & Row, New York. It was prepared by staff members and associates of the Southern Education Reporting Service and includes eleven articles:

"Law of the Land," The Courts and the Schools (Robert Leflar); "The South’s Own Civil War," Battle for the Schools (Weldon James); "Communities in Strife," Where There Was Violence (Wallace Westfeldt); "Along the Border," Desegregation at the Fringes (Robert Lasch); "City Limits," Segregation-Desegregation in the Cities (Edgar Jones); "The Deep South," Segregation Holds Firm (W. D. Workman Jr.); "Segregation and Politics," On the Hustings (Bert Collier); "Be It Enacted," The Legislative Record (Patrick McCauley); "Nation’s Showcase," The Washington Experience (Jeanne Rogers); "Halls of Ivy – Southern Exposure," In the Colleges (Joseph Parham); "Man in No Man’s Land," The School Administrator (Glen Robinson).

These comprise what the editor calls a journalistic summation of three turbulent years since the U.S. Supreme Court decision against segregation in the public schools. In those three years, 685 school districts (18%) had begun or accomplished the desegregation process. The pace of desegregation was slow and cautious – and in some instances full of tumult. An atmosphere of hostility developed between North and South. Nothing like it had happened in so short a span of time. What would happen next?
The 239-page hardbound book is fully indexed, includes biographical information about the contributors, and a listing of the desegregation status of public colleges in the southern states. It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. No defects are apparent on either the covers or inside pages; the dust jacket is present and shows some minor edge/corner wear under its protective covering. (4378)

World-Wide Racism, 1940s

Taking a wide view of race relations, Edmund D. Soper’s RACISM, A WORLD ISSUE examines much more than racial minorities in the United States.

Its roots were in a seminar on ‘Race’ held in Chicago in 1942-43, preparing for a conference on the ‘Christian Bases of World Order’ scheduled for the following spring. Following that, and another meeting, Soper assembled the information to compile this report, which was published in 1947 by Abingdon-Cokesbury Press, New York.

Chapters cover Races of the World; Racism: Fact and Problem; Nazi Dogma of the Master Race; Russia: Many Peoples, One Nation; Group and Race Tensions in India; The Far East and the West; The Island World of the Pacific; Black and White in Africa; Brazil: The Fading Out of the Color Line; Race Patterns in Spanish America; Racial Minorities in the U.S.; The Negro in American Life; Racism and World Order; the Christian Faces the Color Bar.

It’s a very interesting study – and flavored more with a religious view than most of the other titles on this topic. Condition of the book is Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. The covers show wear to edges, corners and spine ends, with a small area of the front having something of a waffled effect. Both hinges are broken, but the binding is still tight. A few inside pages have some tears on the outer margins, evidently where the pages were uncut and someone was careless in cutting them apart. Still, the information is here – and the book is a difficult one to find. In many ways, racism hasn’t changed too much since this one was written … take a look! (4390)

Black History: NEGRO POLITICS 1960
One of the early ‘modern’ studies of African-American politics, NEGRO POLITICS, THE SEARCH FOR LEADERSHIP was written by University of Chicago political science professor James Q. Wilson and published in this 1960 edition by the Free Press of Glencoe, Illinois.

Wilson divides his book into three major sections: Organization of Negro Political Life (Negro Politics in the North, Negro Politics in Chicago, Negro-White Political Relations in Chicago); Organization of Negro Civic Life (Ecology and Civic Life, Negro Civic Forces in Chicago, Negro Press, Mass Organization, the Negro and White Businessmen, the Negro and White Allies, Interracial Attitudes); Character of Negro Public Life (Goals of Negro Leaders, Political Styles, Types of Negro Civic Leaders, Character of Negro Civic Action, the Negro in the North.)

The author brings a bright light into a previously obscure area and offers a sympathetic picture of a splintered community with too many leaders, too many programs and too little power. His writing includes notes on sources of his material and the 342-page hardbound book is completely indexed.

Condition of the book is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some very minor edge/corner wear on the covers; inside pages have no apparent defects. (4346)

Racial Discrimination in Private Education

Published in 1957 by the University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, RACIAL DISCRIMINATION AND PRIVATE EDUCATION – A LEGAL ANALYSIS was written by Arthur S. Miller, Emory University. It studies the legal problems involved in the racial desegregation of denominational and other private schools, attempting to fill what the author saw as a gap in the literature of racial relations in education.

The 136-page hardbound book discusses the private school system in America, governmental sanctions against integration, private sanctions against integration, the public nature of private education, limitations in grants and gifts, and an appraisal of the situation. It includes a lengthy table of cases, as well as a complete index.

Condition of this book is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show some very minor wear on corners and spine ends, with slight fading of the title information on spine. Inside pages show no apparent defects. This is a difficult title to find now … don’t miss it! (4379)

The Riot Report, 1969
Written by Barbara Ritchie, THE RIOT REPORT is a shortened version of the Report of the National Advisory Commission of Civil Disorders, a group which had been appointed by the president to investigate 1960s riots in American cities and answer questions such as what happened, why did it happen and what could be done to prevent it happening again.

The report was released in March, 1968 and went far beyond those issues. It painted a devastating picture of the divided society – black and white – which made up the U.S.

The Commission’s report is valuable reading for all Americans who are concerned about the future of society and this abridged version, profusely illustrated with powerful photographs, contains the essence of that report for readers of all ages.

The 254-page hardbound book was published in 1969 by the Viking Press, New York, and includes both a bibliography and index. This copy appears to be a FIRST EDITION.

Condition is Very Good, although the book is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some scuffing and light edge/corner wear to the covers; inside pages, however, have no apparent defects. It’s a great record of a very important document! (4410)/n

Inter-Racial Love in the Shadows, 1960s

An English reporter, in this country as a foreign correspondent for Britain's Manchester Guardian, fell in love with an American girl he met in the South. Their courtship was stormy in the very nature of its setting: he was covering race riots and she was a Negro.

Bill Weatherby met Christina in New Orleans at an 'integration party' soon after his arrival in this country. It was 1960. For Weatherby, the bloom was still on the South -- the legendary charm seemed real.

It became reality of another sort the day he watched four Negro children walk through a howling, spitting mob of white Southerners to enroll in a white elementary school.

The hatred and viciousness, were soon translated for Weatherby into the personal nightmare of loving a Negro -- the fear of meetings, the dread of partings, the drawn-out poignancy of coming together against a background of violence.

By getting to New York, Weatherby thought he and the girl would stand a chance for a life together. But in New York he found yet other obstacles to their relationship – and she found, in her own desperation, the Black Muslim movement.

LOVE IN THE SHADOWS was written by William J. Weatherby and published in 1966 by Stein & Day, New York. The 182-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There is minor edge/corner wear to the covers, but inside pages have no apparent defects. The dust jacket is present and protected with a plastic covering. (4519N)

Transformation of the Negro American

Sit-ins, freedom rides and protest marches were constant reminders in the 1960s that Negro Americans could no longer be considered a patient, submissive minority. The reality of Negro culture, the emotional and ethnic attachments to Africa and the place for Negro ‘Zionism’ were crucial questions for a minority that had to submit to slavery and subordination, then adapt to theoretical equality but economic bondage and social isolation, finally struggling for a status and identity.

Written by Leonard Broom and Norval Glenn, TRANSFORMATION OF THE NEGRO AMERICAN examines the changing role of Negroes as a cultural bloc and their relationship with whites. It’s an important work of social analysis and an indispensable aid in understanding how the attitude of the Negro himself was changing.

The 207-page hardbound book was published in this FIRST EDITION in 1965 by Harper & Row, New York. It’s in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. There are no apparent defects on either the covers or inside pages; the dust jacket is present and protected with a covering. An interesting book! (4377/M)

The Riddle of American Racism

Providing a unique historical record for the roots of the race hatred that has troubled the United States since it began, THE RIDDLE OF RACISM was written by Carl S. Hirsch and published in this 1972 FIRST EDITION by The Viking Press, New York.

The author uses a chronological framework to trace his search for scientific knowledge of race as a biological phenomenon against the background of political events that reveal its sociological aspects. The scientific struggle focuses on the question of ‘superior’ and ‘inferior’ races, from a time when white supremacy was the prevailing view of the America’s political, social and religious leaders, including those opposed to slavery, to today’s understanding of a concept of race – and its biological and cultural significance. Along the way, the reader meets many individuals whose personal stories illuminate the perpetual questions underlying the racism problem.

The 222-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. We see no defects at all on the inside pages; the covers have only very slight wear on the corners and spine ends. It’s a well thought-out book – and written in a way that makes the subject very interesting. (4413/n)
