Rise, Decline of Western Hemisphere ‘We, in the Western Hemisphere, belong to a community of neighbors…’ stated Mexican writer and diplomat Luis Quintanilla in 1952. ‘Not only do geographical closeness and similar historical background s bring us together, but we all share in common an idea about the organization of society and of the world. From pole to pole, from ocean to ocean, we are all in the same boat, we were created to live together.’

The eight essays which comprise THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE IDEA: ITS RISE AND DECLINE examine the hemisphere idea as it developed in the 18th century; they follow its fluctuations during the 19th century; and they trace the rise and decline of the idea in the 20th century.

Written by Arthur P. Whitaker and published in 1954 by the Cornell University Press, Ithaca, NY, the 194-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers have no apparent defects (neither do the inside pages), and the accompanying dust jacket is protected with a Mylar covering. (5709)

Latin American Diplomacy and Reality
‘Possibly the most significant currently available study of the U.S.-Latin-American relationship. . . Having placed Cuba in the proper context of the Latin-American problem, Mr. Berle proceeds to debate rather ruthlessly but clearly the issues that are involved in constructing a new and positive relationship in the hemisphere,’ said the front page review in the NEW YORK TIMES of Adolf A. Berle’s LATIN AMERICA: DIPLOMACY AND REALITY.

With the emergence of Castro's Cuba, the United States and its neighbors to the south needed to decide how to cope with a Communist offensive that had already imperiled their security. They also needed to plan a long-range program for the future of the American Hemisphere. The two conferences at Punta del Este were only the beginning of a process of rapid change.

In the long view, the importance of Latin America far outweighed the disputes, tensions, and difficulties of the contemporary scene. Placing this region on a vast chessboard, the author examined the possibility that Latin America could become one of the great power factors in the world balance.

The 144-page hardbound book was published in this 1962 stated First Edition by Harper & Row for the Council on Foreign Relations. It is in Very Good condition – despite being ex lib with the usual library markings, there is no apparent damage to either the book or the mylar-protected dust jacket. (5865/r4)

1931 Studies of Savage Life

With a subtitle, 'Studies of Actual Savage Life,' Louise Marie Spaeth's MARRIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE AMONG STRANGE PEOPLES is a collection of information about the historic practices of marriage and family.

The 112-page hardbound book was published in 1931 by Thomas Rockwell Co., Chicago, and this appears to be a FIRST EDITION. Beginning with a discussion of the Early Forms of Marriage, Spaeth continues with in-depth review of customs of Getting Married, Primitive Family Life, When a Child is Born, Adolescence and Initiation, and Daily Life in the Tribe.

Included are views of American Indians (the Cheyenne and Omaha tribes); the Melanesian tribes who practiced polyamy; the Trobriand Island tribes; Eskimo tribes; the Todas in southern India; Wahumas tribe of East Africa; Chukchi and Koryak of Siberia; the Ewe tribe of Africa and many others.

The book is written in a very interesting and understandable tone and is eye-opening in many respects! It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib with the usual library markings. The book appears to have bee professionally rebound in a heavy library binding and there is little damage to the covers beyond very minor corner wear. Inside pages show no defects we've found! It's a neat one! It's also a very scarce title - we only found a couple of them available for sale and they were listed around the $40 mark. Here's a bargain! (2044)

Epic of Australia’s Birth, The Fatal Shore

THE FATAL SHORE, The Epic of Australia’s Founding was written by Robert Hughes and published in this 1988 First Vintage Books Edition by Vintage Books, New York.

Featuring 16 pages of illustrations and three maps, the 752-page softcover book retells the history of the birth of Australia which came out of the suffering and brutality of England's infamous convict transportation system.

It’s an extraordinary volume -- even a masterpiece -- that reads like a fine novel. The author captures everything in a complex story with narrative finesse that drives the reader ever-deeper into specific facts and greater understanding. He presents compassionate understanding of the plights of colonists -- both freemen and convicts -- and the Aboriginal peoples they displaced.

Various critics described the book as ‘a great achievement – a story as vivid and appalling as anything by Dickens or Solzhenitsyn’; ‘engrossing – richly peopled with bizarre and compelling characters; ‘a magnificent history with rich detail that is as mesmerizing as it is horrifying … both passionate and compassionate;’ ‘brilliant and enduring … combining thorough research with vivid narrative and thoughtful assessment.’

The book is in Very Good+ condition, with slight residue from a label on front cover, but no other apparent defects, inside or out. (5625/r35)
