Rise, Decline of Western Hemisphere ‘We, in the Western Hemisphere, belong to a community of neighbors…’ stated Mexican writer and diplomat Luis Quintanilla in 1952. ‘Not only do geographical closeness and similar historical background s bring us together, but we all share in common an idea about the organization of society and of the world. From pole to pole, from ocean to ocean, we are all in the same boat, we were created to live together.’

The eight essays which comprise THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE IDEA: ITS RISE AND DECLINE examine the hemisphere idea as it developed in the 18th century; they follow its fluctuations during the 19th century; and they trace the rise and decline of the idea in the 20th century.

Written by Arthur P. Whitaker and published in 1954 by the Cornell University Press, Ithaca, NY, the 194-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers have no apparent defects (neither do the inside pages), and the accompanying dust jacket is protected with a Mylar covering. (5709)

British Penal System, Cure for Crime

A CURE FOR CRIME, THE CASE FOR THE SELF-DETERMINATE PRISON SENTENCE was written by Kathleen J. Smith, a former assistant governor of Britain’s Holloway Prison. The 112-page hardbound book was published in 1965 (in this apparent FIRST EDITION) by Gerald Duckworth & Co., London.

The author attacks the out-of-date treatment of criminals and introduces her idea that prisoners should pay for their crimes with their labor on a strict financial basis, compensating victims on a similar basis. She studies the effects of her proposals on offenders and their victims, on the police and the courts, and on society as a whole, then answers possible objections. It’s a well thought-out theory!

Condition of the book is Good+, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There are some stains on front and back covers. Inside pages, however, show no apparent defects. The pages are clean, crisp, tightly bound and easily read! A great addition to your criminology, prison or justice collection.

Chinese Revolution, 1948 Land Reform
Written by William Hinton, who spent six months in the Chinese village of Long Bow observing progress of work there just three years after Red Army forces had liberated it from Japanese occupation, Fanshen, A Documentary of Revolution in a Chinese Village provides an interesting view of the problems of land reform. The 637-page hardbound book was published in 1967 by the Monthly Review Press, New York.

According to his Preface, Hinton feels the impact of the land question on world affairs is more than a Chinese problem. The questions of who owns the land and who rules the countryside is intensifying. Sooner or later, he says, all those countries where agricultural production is a main source of wealth – and the relation between owners and producers is a main source of social conflict – will undergo great transformations. In countries that stand on the verge of land revolution, people are eager to study such lessons. In countries like our own, whose leaders have the capacity to hasten or delay such transformations in other lands, people ought to study them.

His book describes vividly the land and the people who live on it. The readers sees the terrible hardships they have endured; the extremes of hope and despair they experience in trying to build a new society; the courage, tenacity and self-denial of those who have accepted the responsibilities of leadership; the pathetic, sometimes humorous, human problems that must be resolved.

Condition of the book is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show light wear on the corners, as well as sun-fading of the spine. Inside pages have no apparent defects. It’s an important work – and an interesting one! (4144)

Foreign Enterprise in Colombia, 1965

Much of the foreign enterprise we've heard about the South American country of Colombia in recent years has involved illegal drug trafficking. However, when Seymour W. Wurfel wrote FOREIGN ENTERPRISE IN COLOMBIA, LAWS AND POLICIES in the mid 1960s, the outlook was quite different. The 563-page hardbound book was published in 1965 by the University of North Carolina Press for the American Society of International Law.

The book directs itself primarily to the problems of the private sector in the developing economy and particularly to the legal influences on foreign private investment.

The first section deals with the history of the country, the people, the educational system, the natural resources, industrial development, business and trade practices, Latin American Free Trade Area participation and the governmental structure.

In the second section, Wurfel examines the agencies and organized programs, domestic and foreign, that were participating in Colombia's economic development and the improvement of its investment climate.

The third division presents a broad view of the Colombian civil law legal system - the laws of business organizations, governmental regulation of business, labor, taxation and the treatment of foreigners. It's detailed and quite informative! Numerous notes, charts and a complete index make the book easily used.

Condition is Very Good, although the book is ex lib with the usual library markings. It has a few very minor cover scuffs and light corner wear. Inside pages have no apparent defects.

It's a good one - and quite scarce now with only a few copies available for sale on the internet. Don't miss this one if you're looking for information on international business! (2865/r29rd)
